  1. 100% accurate quote. They mimic things they see in the wild to evade predation. In captivity what are they going to mimic? What predators would they need to flee? You'd never see it doing anything cool except die.
  2. TANK IS SOLD************ But if you really really really want one you might talk me out of one of my other ones
  3. I took mine all the way down to 35 degrees when I was testing it during this last summer. I keep it at 58 or so now for the animals.
  4. Thought I would give you guys an update on this Picked these up today to go along with the one I already have set up. So yes, that is three 110 gallon coldwater tanks I have now  I only needed one more of them, but the price was too good to pass up. They both need a little cleaning and some minor modifications like my current one to make them work for home aquariums. I've already done all the experimenting on the one I have running so I know exactly what to do with these ones. Anyways, I'll probably be selling one soon if anyone is interested shoot me a PM.
  5. My brother and I did the rounds today on the live seafood markets to see if there was anything new and exciting. Mostly the same old stuff, snails, abalone, crab, lobster, clams, oysters, blah blah blah..... But we found a new place that did have live fish today and these are what they had. They were all about 8 inches long or so, averaging about 2 lbs they told me and they were $7.99 a lb. Didn't know what they were at first but suspected a kelp greenling, which they turned out to be. Looks like they had 3 coloration's in there. Did some quick reading and the color differences are just male, female, and juvenile My pictures dont do them justice so I'll post google images underneath each of my pics. KELP GREENLING
  6. You guys should check this out if you are thinking about doing a coldwater tank http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2011/1/corals Some pictures of my livestock and setups are in the article
  7. Got another for sale if anyone is interested Up on craigslist for a bit cheaper than the last one I sold. $525 and I can help you load it or rent a truck and deliver it http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/app/2233041158.html
  8. Oh yes, Steve is quite aware that I'm interested in anything he brings up Does he dive for fun, or professionally? I was talking with someone recently about getting in touch with an underwater welder. I'm looking for gorgonians, nems, cool fish. Pretty much anything as long as its not over 6" full grown for fish.
  9. Just curious if there was anyone here that dives? I don't, so I wanted to see if anyone who does would be interested in bringing up some critters for my coldwater tank next time they go
  10. **********SOLD TO MY NEW COLDWATER BUDDY NICK AT ROSE CITY********* Looking forward to a collecting trip in the future, hit me up
  11. There will be little to no algae growth in the tank because it will only be sparsely lit from overhead and only when I'm viewing it since all the animals going into the tank are non-photosynthetic. The only piece of equipment that wont be housed in the garage will be the pump that is hooked up to the closed loop that feeds into the fridge auto feeder. The end goal of the tank for me is to be viewable from the top when I'm standing next to it and viewable from the side when I'm sitting on my couch in the living room. My hope is that with the coast to coast overflow running the entire length of the tank that it will allow for only a very small drop in water height between the overflow and the durso stand pipes that will run out to the garage tanks. With those two things working together it should be almost silent and also have very minimal surface agitation but still have good tank flow from the closed loop.
  12. I was actually going to shoot you a PM about that. What ended up being the final cost on your tank from James?
  13. I was thinking about this and it probably makes more sense for me to build the whole tank out of clear so that if for some reason in the future I set the tank up at a different location it would be more viewable. If I want the sides blacked out too I can just get thin acrylic cut to size and slide it in there. The bottom doesn't make to much of a difference since I could just paint the top of the stand area black.
  14. I figured I better start puting all of my thoughts ideas and plans in one place for my future tank build. Now that my over ambitious excitement has worn off and I'm thinking rationally again, I have decided on a tank size and build material. I have a perfect nook in my living room that is about 75" long and 24" deep. I'm planning on building in the stand with enough room to house my automated feeding fridge and the pump for the closed loop and then with shelves to both sides of that. The tank I have gone back and forth on with build materials, sizes, glass or acrylic, 3/4" or 1", clear or black, on and on etc etc. I have come to a fairly certain final plan for the tank. I want to do the entire tank out of 1" acrylic. I could probably get away with 3/4" but I would rather wait a while and save the money and do it right with 1" the first time rather than regret it later. The front panel would be the only clear one, the bottom, sides, and back being black. This is depending on what the price difference between black and clear is going to be. Realistically the bottom and sides could be clear if it is cheaper to do so, but black would be easier in the end run I think. I'll take final measurements after the stand is completed for the tank, but I will be building it to fill the whole nook. I was thinking of making it flush with the existing wall at first, but I think I am going to set it back about an inch so that I dont have to fill the gap in the bull nose corners of my walls and the stand. Also, I think this small difference will help my living room not feel quite so long and narrow. So the final tank dimensions would be roughly 72" x 23" x 24", with the back 3-4 inches fo the tank having a coast to coast overflow to make it near silent. I'll have two durso stand pipes staggered in the back to further silence it. There will be a closed loop system plumbed through the C2C overflow wall that will be linked into the automated fridge feeder under the tank. The overflows will drain down under the tank and join into a common pipe that will run through the living room wall, out into my garage, and dump into the filter plate on the top of my 110 gallon marineland commercial system. Just thought I should get this all out of my head and written down somewhere that I can reference back to and get input from others on Feel free to chime in with questions, comments, or ideas(clap)
  15. Definately have a few peppermint shrimp in there to keep the aptasia under control and they will spawn and dump the babies into the main tank for food You could always do some pygmy seahorses in one chamber towards the end so that the pods would flow to them as a food source.
