  1. I usually just start off a dive by warming my wetsuit... without the shark most of the time. There was the time that I encountered the shark while diving in Florida... But it was only a nurse shark. dsoz
  2. My tank is in the basement. It is in the high 60's year round down there. With T5 lights, the tank does not get warm enough without a heater. dsoz
  3. I'm in... but no sharing of details. Just say I have a "man cave" for my fish room for a reason. dsoz
  4. The biggest problem with sodium vapor lamps, if they are low pressure type, is that they produce a vast majority of their light in two very close wavelengths (spectrum color lines) that is just under 600nm (a yellow color). For photosynthesis to work well, it needs more than just yellow light. It also needs the blue and the red light for different processes. If they are high pressure sodium vapor lights, there is a larger variety of colors that are produced, and do include the reds and blues that are needed (make a more "white" light). From the looks of the spectrum found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_vapor_lamp the largest intensity of light is found in the green, yellow, and orange areas of the spectrum, with a little in the red, and not a whole lot in the blue area. Again, not the best for photosynthesis. Sodium vapor lamps probably don't have that great of PAR rating, but that is just speculation on my part. dsoz
  5. I had some of that stuff... It is hard to get rid of. I did have a powder brown tang that would keep it in check, but it could not reach in between some of the rocks so it is still around... red turf algae is a pain in the neck to get rid of... I would take the rock out and NUKE that area with a blow torch then break off that area and throw it away with a voodoo curse on it before it spreads to any other area of your tank. dsoz
  6. I have chopped rics into as many as 4 pieces and all survived the experience. It would have been better if the cut was cleaner, but you have what you have. Should be just fine. dsoz

welcome back. Once the salt is in the blood, it is like crack to an addict... dsoz
  8. Even bonding can reverse... From a chemistry standpoint, every chemical bond can be reversed. It is called equilibrium. Some bonds are harder to reverse, and the bond between the iron and the phosphate seems to be one of them, but it CAN and will reverse given enough time. The thing about phosphate removers is that there is usually some phosphate being made in the tank at all times which drives the reaction to make the remover work. If there was no phosphate in the tank, then the GFO could start releasing the bound phosphate back. This is just equilibrium chemistry. dsoz
  9. I have man-made rock at $1.50/lb in Oregon City. A lot of people can't tell the difference once it is in your tank and growing coraline. I probably have near 100 lbs ready for a tank and 2-300 lbs. more that could be ready soon. It is light, porous, good shapes, and eco-friendly. Send me a PM if interested. dsoz
  10. Yep, mojano. Kill them or they will take over your tank. dsoz
  11. If you can catch him, I would trade for something that you want in my tank. I have a QT tank that I can set up for a while to keep him happy while he de-icks. dsoz

    Spent bulbs

Take them to the Metro station across from Home Depot in Oregon City. They are considered hazardous waste (they contain mercury) and they will take them for free. Don't drive through the main area, there is a short line for paint and stuff like that just as you enter the gate to the right. That goes for all your other fluorescent bulbs. The long ones and the compact fluorescent ones that twist in. DON'T BREAK THEM!!!!! You will get mercury contamination. Bad news! dsoz
  13. Yep, I got some. I think the last time I sold some it was for $10 per stalk. I have one rock with 5-8 stalks on it. But I can cut the rock up and remove just one if you would like. Send me a PM and we can arrange a meeting time and place. dsoz
  14. looks like a bacteria colony to me. Could be from something that was dead and dried up in the pores of the rock and the bacteria are using it to grow and multiply. Nothing to worry about. It is one of the reasons that we cure the rock outside the tank. dsoz
  15. I missed the last meeting there. I would like to see the new expansion that he did. Make sure that you hit up a few stores on the way. Also see if there are any trades/buys from members that you can make while you are up here. Might as well... dsoz
  16. not for trade, but I will sell you some fungia. Sending PM dsoz

    iPad

No, no frag shop. In fact I am probably going to be shutting down my smaller system. If you want anything out of my tank make me an offer. I have too much stuff for one tank to hold... Seriously, if you want help with the bio stuff just let me know Dsoz

    iPad

I am not going to hold my breath on that one... BTW, I think Droid will crush the iPhone soon... dsoz
  19. I got one that I was considering giving up. About 7-8" diameter when fully open. PM coming your way. dsoz
  20. The tips of the tentacles look more round to me. That leads me to say mojano over aptasia. However, does it really matter what they are as long as we know that they need to not be allowed to reproduce in our tanks... The debate goes on. dsoz
