  1. Algae I have some if you want to talk me out of it, I will have to check and see how much I have, I'm thinking 1/3-1/2 of a 5 gallon bucket.
  2. Does anyone even read this? New addition to the tank, anyone?
  3. I really like my JBJ, had for a few years with no issues, wires are sealed very well and the float has tons of room for calcium deposits. I also like the lights as they give me a heads up what its doing so I don't have to check everything.
  4. Checked nitrates today, 0ppm out of effluent, now I just have to wait, I will check nitrates in water in a few weeks, but for now reactor is working like it should. 1 drip per second out.
  5. message me your email and I can throw you some recipes. This is the one for salmon I use. I do not use the basting section, I sinply smoke my fish complete and let cool hen I add the glaze cold as it will be very nice and thick. For Maple syrup I use Mrs butterworths as I like the flavor more that Premium maple syrup for this recipe. As a side note after an hour of smoking make sure you wipe the sweat from the fish and keep an eye on sweating. Maple Glaze for Salmon 1 cup pure maple syrup 2 tablespoons finely grated peeled fresh gingerroot 4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 3 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce 1 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest Fresh ground pepper to taste In a small heavy saucepan simmer maple syrup, gingerroot, 3 tablespoons lemon juice, soy sauce, garlic, lemon zest and pepper to taste until reduced to about 1 cup, about 30 minutes, and let cool. (Maple glaze may be made 2 days ahead and chilled, covered. Bring maple glaze to room temperature before proceeding.) In another small saucepan heat half of glaze over low heat until heated through to use as a sauce. Stir in remaining tablespoon lemon juice. Remove pan from heat and keep sauce warm, covered. NOTE: If you simmer the glaze for the full 30 minutes it will be more of a basting sauce. To use as a mop, divide the glaze into two equal portions after simmering for 5 - 10 minutes (long enough for the flavors to meld together). Simmer the second portion for the remaining 20 minutes and then add the last teaspoon of lemon juice. Serve as a side sauce. The original recipe listed "Salt to taste". Since this recipe also contains soy sauce I omitted the salt altogether and replace the soy sauce with a "Low Sodium" Soy sauce.
  6. Bad Baxter was the user that had the dual setup, I have his email if you need it. His name is Bill, he is a nice guy.
  7. Not sure Im following what your talking about? The unit already has JG fittings?
  8. I am using phoslock, works great but needs rinsing.
  9. Use phosban and another I am currently using from waves the couple years I think its rowa but could be something else??? The only difference I see is phosban I can just dump it in and rowa I have to rinse like mad, but its about 30% cheaper so I am fine with rinsing. Both have worked just fine.
  10. The only reason I did not go HQI (DE) is due to the lack of choice in bulbs at the time. I know they have gotten better but I cant say as I don't have much experience with them but if it was me I would probably go with something like the XM 20k DE, reason being is with a HQI bulb you should get about the same PAR as what a non HQI bulb would put out around 15k. So you can get great PAR because of your HQI setup and great color. I personally avoided HQI though for fear of heat, bulb life, color choices (mostly only hamilton bulbs when I looked) and the slight increase in electrical use... all which could be argued but they where factors in my choice at the time. http://www.reefgeek.com/lighting/Metal_Halide/Bulbs/XM_Lighting/250W_20000K_Metal_Halide_Bulb_%28Double-ended%29_by_XM_Lighting
  11. unfortunately in your situation its a SE
  12. I agree, I really enjoyed the XM 14/15k bulb (mine was stamped 14k a number of years ago)
  13. I would take a 20k any day of the week for color (coralvue SE) but for growth I will probably end up getting the 14k this year. I ran the 14k XM for a year and loved it, then ran the 20k for 2 years and loved it more. Think of it like this lower K more growth but whiter color, higher K Better color and less growth. I still have seen corals in my tank quadrouple in size in a year easily with a 20k though.
  14. All I did was turn off the co2 in the cal reactor and remove all the cal media, put in 2/3 sulfur and then top back off with cal media (arm) and set to a 1 drip per second. This setup requires no ph probe nor co2 as long as the drip is slow the ph will naturally lower. You could use co2 to lower but its not necessary as the low drip rate will easily reduce the nitrate to nothing as the first test last year or so ago showed, also I should have much less risk of having to much effluent causing a huge nitrate production instead of reduction. Also note my system is less than half the size of the old one. However I am still bare bottom and I think it has a little to do with my reoccurring nitrate problem and my remote DSB is not very big.
  15. well that was easy, all setup, will check it in two days and see if I have 0 ppm nitrate, currently I am around 20 ppm with weekly water changes. fun fun.
  16. Well since I have not needed my calcium reactor and it has not sold I am going to convert it over to the same nitrate reactor as above, hopefully with the same great results as my previous model, it will also make SOME Alk as well but only about 1/5 what a regular reactor would do but every bit helps. I will post results when I get a new nitrate test kit. Firing it up the converted no3 reactor in a few hours.
  17. Jay did you ever get a smoker? I would be happy to share some good recipes for fish, ribs, briskit and lots of others if your interested.

    Hawkfish in reef?

Had a falco hawk for a long time, he was ok (dwarf) but did get pretty aggressive after a few years, I ended up getting rid of him but he was very comical and an attention hog.
  19. Nope, I was not expecting to have such a good week and we did not have the cooler space for him, as it was we ended up garbage bagging a lot of it and throwing ice in to get home. I think we ended up buying 30 bags of ice....
  20. I was well within legal limits (I was there most the week), we are allowed 2 silvers a day per person and 12 crab per person per day. I was out about 8 miles west of Columbia river mouth (seaside) Kids caught the rockfish and hurled there guts out from sea sickness, it was a great time. I have some videos of reeling in one of the shark and a pic of it. When I get it from the person filming I may post....
  21. I assume this is a green serpent star, as they like to eat fish, never seen a regular (tiger/stripe) star do such a thing.
  22. I seen a guy from the boards do it before, as stated I would do a t so you can have good control over the pressure at the tap or you will more than likly not have enough pressure or be foaming like mad.
