  1. If you are driving to Salem do you want me to just pick out some rock for you? Do you want the LR or the DIY stuff and how much do you want? If not we could drive to Albany (I could with you) and you could cherry pick what you want out of the school system. Let me know.
  2. Trying to generate some money for school tanks. Need to buy some bulbs and salt! Have lots of LR for sale. Will sell for $3 a pound. Unless you have some sweet stuff for trade. Also have rock the kids have made. My favorite DIY recipe is oyster shells/acrylic shavings mix. Coraline goes nuts on it. All of the above mentioned rock has been in an existing system for the last 2 years. Cured and ready to go.
  3. I have had a multitude of various cukes and never had a problem with them poisoning the tank. The biggest problem I have had is with them climbing up the side of the tank and plugging up the overflow to the sump. Never caused tank overflow but always made me nervous to see the water level in the tank suddenly rise and then drop back down as they crawled away. This was not a tiger tail however. This was a big black cuke about 8" long. A classroom favorite. Looks like poo!
  4. No problem. We can do the teacher "talk". Miles has heard it before!!!
  5. I can go. Will talk to Lowman also. Maybe Garrett, Micheal,Bob and I can all carpool together! Do you want me to do any teacher stuff??!!! Some people already know my gift for the gab! I can discuss how I use the tanks in the classroom. Niles already knows how I make DIY rocks but I can throw in my 2 bits if necessary.
  6. Just got through reading the thread by Lowman and R3. You guys know me to well. Thanks. Would also like to thank all the people who brought stuff for school tanks and gave me stuff from their raffle winnings. I miss hanging out with the group. Lots of new faces. I always like to see that. Some old familiar faces and some really old (scarey) faces that still give me nightmares. My tanks at school are doing okay. Biggest problem is keeping MH bulbs fairly new. If anyone finds sweet deals on bulbs or we can somehow do a group buy that would be awesome. It takes a long time to raise enough money selling snacks at school to buy new lights. I hope that everyone has an awesome winter break. Take care and thanks again. Roger
  7. Hey it has been awhile. I am still alive and have the tanks going strong in the classroom. I apologize for disappearing for so long. Alot has happened in the last few months. Nice to see a new webpage and logo. Fun to recoginize all the old members and the new ones. Just wanted to say I was back in the ranks again. Roger ps. Bob aka Lowman aka Whatever your new name is now........ give me a call and leave your new cell number on my cell phone. Your old one does not work anymore.

    Hello

Hey it has been quite a long time since I have been on the threads. I have had issues with the district in regards to access of this site. The district blocks any type of threads besides the usual stuff. I am studying the basic animal phylums with my 6th graders in my classes. As some of you know I have quite a set up in my classroom. The bad news is that of course, I had a major crash so I am hurting for invertebrates if you are cleaning up your tanks. I could use any of the following: 1. Porifera (sponges, any type or variety) 2. Cnidarians (any type of anemone, coral (soft or hard) I have MH lites! 3. Mollusks (if you have huge snail populations, etc) 4. Echinoderms (starfish, urchins, etc) None of the items will be dissected or anything bad. I just like them seeing living examples of what we are talking about. I am also looking into having my elective class doing some coral growing??!!! Also if you have any fish that you can no longer keep for any reason I have the following tank set ups 1 29 gal tank 3 frag tanks 1 110 gal tank space is not an issue. Thanks for any help in advance! Mr S
  11. tempting......... space might be an issue. will check class space
  12. Here is my 2 cents about this awesome project the club wants to endorse. 1. The teacher should have some type of application that they fill out stating why they want the tank and how it will be used. 2. The tank should be bullet proof. Skimmer, lights etc. 3. Teacher should be made aware that there is upkeep involved and also a monthly cost for salt. 4. Test kits and a mentor should be associated with each tank give away. 5. Tank should be set up and organisms established for the teacher. I would be happy to help in anyway I can. The club has helped me set up my tanks and the local shops have been very generous. My students love my tanks and it is an integral part of my curriculum.
  13. I teach at a secret spot...........yeah, a secret spot!!
  14. hmmm, are you sure you actually ordered one or did you just fake it!!!!!! LOL
  15. ps. I thought there was a mapquest on the evite?
  16. I have no idea how many people will be there. As typical, not a lot of evite responses but I know of alot of people who will be there. Let's play it by ear. Glad you are coming!!!
  17. nOON. I think the evite said noon also. Sorry for the mix up.
  18. Geez Sean that sounds awesome. I know I like blue colored zoos on my pizza!!!! LOL There is a pizza hut by the mall. Do you know how to get there?
  19. Okay so I am having a rock making party on Sunday. You should have all got evites. I plan on showing you how my students and I make LR and plugs. I realize there are many ingrediants and ways to make them so I will go over a few. My main plan is to make it a hands on day. I don't want to teach on my day offDOH! I do need to know how many people are coming and if they want to build or just watch. If you are building the following materials would be good to bring: rubber gloves container to take your rock home in (it will take a few days to dry out) any paper cups or something if you want to make plugs a large container of sand or crushed coral if you want to get jiggy! pm me if you have any questions (no personal ones, I get creeped out pretty easily) or respond to this post if there are general questions. IT goes without saying that every workshop I have had at my class involves food so respond on this post about what food you are bringing(rock2) heh heh heh I will bring pop.
  20. actually he was acting like he was dead. stayed in one spot and slightly tilted like a dead bloated fish. I assumed he had died and told my student aide to remove the carcass. It is not a well lit tank. My student aide must have forgotten to remove it. It just ate a molly so I think he was pretty hungry. I did some research and found that they don't actually have to eat that often. An easy fish to take care of if I keep this type of husbandry!!! LOL I think he is happier now that he has a fresh tank and a full belly
  21. I have had my 29g tank half full for the last 3 weeks because my Angler fish died. I vacuumed out the tank, changed water, etc. Saw a clump of goo in the bottom of the tank so I naturally grabbed it to throw it away. Remember this is while the kids are building hot air balloons. To my squealing surprise, (all students heard and saw me), the clump of goo turned out to be a very angry angler fish that flared up and immediately swam into the rock pile. Pretty funny. I guess I should feed him. He looks very healthy once he moved around the tank.DOH!

    Triggers

I have never had a problem with a niger trigger. That does not mean it couldn't happen. I have dan's niger in my school tank and he is doing fine.
  23. Dan, Ryan sells magnesium supplement. Let me know if you want some and I can pick some up and meet you at work or you can come to my school on the way home. And the Niger says 'whats up'
  24. Sweet set up. I would also like to visit your tank some time. You are more then welcome to come to the rock building seminar I am hosting in February at my school. My 8th graders just got through doing ocean animal powerpoints. I gave them extra credit if they did a critter from the reef tank. It is a great way to get students to appreciate the reef and get them to learn biology terminology. I can send you the outline if you are interested. They then presented to the class.
  25. My Clown tang is awesome. He adds a nice change of color in my tank. Does not pick on any of the other fish. Is great about grazing on macro in the tank. A cool fish.
