  7. only if the following is true 1. It is done on time 2. I don't have to grade it 3. Your parents won't come in and want a time extension on the assignment 4. You don't whine about which organism you get 5. Your computer does not break down or you don't have one 6. hmmm I am sure there are more things I could mention. Oh yeah, Bob, Make sure there is nothing biased, inappropriate, controversial etc, ect. heh heh heh
  8. Cleaning the inside of the tank would be interesting. Imagine coralline scraping!
  9. Well the plan for the school tanks is to have each of my 6th grade students, which amounts to 90 kids, the other half is made up of 100 8th graders. Yes, do the math, I have 190 kids in 6 classes. You might say they are a tad large. Now getting back to the 6th grade classes. I would like each 6th grader to pick an organism in the tank, take a picture of it and then fill out a questonaire on it. Have not got it completely hammered out but things like regular name, latin name, location, zone, connection in the food web, unique characteristics, life cycle, environmental niche, endangered or not, etc. We finished powerpoints with the 8th graders so it is the 6th graders turn now. I would like to print up all their reports and make an id book that would hang by the tanks so kids could look at each organism. Kids are pretty excited about the assignment. (no really, they are) I will use this site to post pics for id purposes. Will keep you posted.
  10. I am going to end up getting the same camera Stacy has. It is a Sony. Check out the pictures she took of my tanks at school.
  11. Hey Jay/Stacey I will take some zoos also if you have some. I will bring in some that you might not have. I assume since no one posted me that there is nothing else I should bring except some fuzzies for Stacey?!!
  12. Either talk to me at the meeting, go to GARF website or do a search on homemade reef rock. You will find several recipes. I have my own favorites, which unlike Coke, I will divulge.
  13. Hey, I have some stuff to trade from the school tanks. I have macro, both chaeto and the fernish type (have heard it called parrot grass?) 2 types of star polyps. One is green with neon centers and the other is brown with neon centers. I have brown xenia, toadstool leathers, anthelia, mushrooms and fuzzy mushrooms. I will not bring all this stuff to the meeting but if someone wants to trade for something send me a reply and I will make a goody bag. We are looking for sponges, (any type), sps and lps corals and anything else that might interest middle schoolers.
  14. It is a tunicate. Pretty knarly stuff. Anyone is welcome to visit. Just let me know ahead of time!!!!!
  15. Try Albany. A great district to work for. Stay away from Portland. They are shutting down schools!
  16. Dan you need to let me know when you are ready to set up a tank. I have some softies I can give you. Also a good idea of what is super hardy and cool to look at.
  17. final fantasy is good. Dungeon Seige is fun on the pc. Spayne, this summer you and your man need to visit me at work and bring your xbox with you.. We will hang up the closed sign or take turns waiting on people!!! dON'T TELL THE BOSS!!!
  18. thanks. it is always cool to see the kids get into what is going on in the tanks. They are amazed by the diversity of all the organisms.
  19. Hey thanks for the offer. Let me know what you can frag. That would be cool. You guys need to stop by the school some time and see the set up.
  20. It is now the time of year that my 6th graders start getting intense about the inhabitants of the school tanks. We start of with Porifers (sponges) luckily I have a few that we can chop up and look at under the microscope. Don't tell PEDA. Next we go to Cnidarians (corals and such). I have a pretty good variety. If viewers have any cool pictures of either of the mentioned I can use them in my PowerPoint presentation to show how varied these phylums are. I plan on going all the way from sponges to arthropods. I can't do fish and such because that happens in the 7th grade!!! (like I don't talk about them!!!) I also have a tank of seahorses which I use as great examples of adaptation to a specific environment. My 8th graders finished powerpoints of tank inhabitants in the fall. They were awesome and the kids still want to do other ones. If I ever get a camera or someone visits me I can post some pics. My tanks are definitely a community effort. I think just about everyone in Albany, Corvallis, Salem and parts of Portland have contributed to it in either labor, advice, stuff or all of the mentioned. Thanks to all of you.
