  1. Well, silly me I put it to the kids to vote on. Showed pictures and everything of potential inhabitants and the overwhelming vote was an octopus!!!! I will post pictures. At this point I am making the escape proof lid and will then release the critter. It will not be a poisonous one and I realize that the life span of an octopus is about a year but I have researched quite a bit and think it is ethically okay. And futhermore the kids are stoked about it. Will keep you posted.!!! A fun thread. Thanks for all the input.
  2. Advanced has the medicine. Give them a call first.
  3. Put some nori in there and also try Mysis shrimp if you have not already. Or some macro algae
  4. I have a 29 gal tall that I am setting up for the kids in my class. I can't decide what to put in it so I figured I would do a forum thread. More input the better. Here are my options so far. 1. An invertebrate tank focusing on every type of shrimp that can live happily together. (no Mantis) 2. An Angler fish (but live feeding is a drag and would probably get parent phone calls) 3. A symbiotic tank. (clown and anemone) and a (watchman and pistol) 4. No seahorse tank (they are a pain) I am not at school on weekends 5. A pipefish tank? do they eat mysis and can the go the weekend without being fed. 6. Any other suggestions? 7. Put a halide on it and do a crazy zoo tank
  5. Still using paint program and then importing. My color does not look like this in my tank. The green is much more bright. Any suggestions?
  6. here is another pic of zoos
  7. I will need instructions on using photobucket. I am computer challenged!!!
  8. Okay, on October 15th we are having the north of Wilsonville tour de tanks. It will include Portland and all outlying areas, and Vancouver. People interested in being visited should give me an address and what part of town they are in. I will then post all interested parties and people can hook up and car pool or visit by themselves. Hosts are under no obligations to give frags, supply food or drink, or be friendly if people show up at 7! The touring will start at 2 and run til around 6. If this time is not conveniant the let me know when you pm me and I will state your hours for visitation. It should be a great time. Don't forget to pm me if you want to host.
  9. It just proves my point that all the duck fans except it sounds like Travis live in Eugene!!!
  10. I think OSU's defensive backfield will be what makes or breaks us. I was rather miffed that all Gunderson got to do was kill time with hand offs. He did not get to throw the ball. Both O line and D line were quite impressive. The defensive back really was not put to the test. Always an OSU Achilles heel. It will be interesting to see who rises. I think this year will be more exciting because there are no overwhelming standout teams.
  11. What, aren't those football players you are growing in your tank?
  12. Get a couple of more chromis. When they are in groups of 3 they have a tendency of 2 picking on one. If you can make the drive to Albany some afternoon it would be worth the trip. Bring a cooler and lots of baggies. I can also show you what it going on with my tanks. Let me know ahead of time though because I might want you to run an errand for me.......heh heh heh.
  13. Mike, I assume you did not need me to come over and babysit the tank?
  14. Not that there is anything wrong with being in the minority (ducks fans) heh heh heh. You crazy tree huggers!!!!
  15. I believe that OSU's game will come in. After all most of the state is Beavers fans!!!!!!
  16. Someone should put that address on the calendar. I could not. I was denied access to update. Sorry.
  17. Hey sorry I did not see this post sooner. In the future pm me. I try to look at that every day. My tanks did great over the summer. I got a great deal on a 1/2 hp chiller from Pacific Coast right Talk to you later. On my way to the BBQ....pm me.

    Zoos!!!

I will try to get a zoa frag party going. I am working on it at this moment. I would assume the usual people will want in on it. Most of the sps frag partiers will probably do it again. Will keep you posted. I know some of those blue zoos of yours would reserve you a spot on the list!!!! heh heh heh LOL

    Zoos!!!

Miles, what kind of lights are you running on your zoa's? I think maybe a zoo fragging party is in the future works. We just need to find someone who can get us large colonies to bust up!!! Nice zoo pics.
  20. an old credit card also works good for prying. razor blades are a bit touchy without hurting the anemone.
  21. I think that the tank set up at Petco is for a 10 gal. fresh water tank. Ron Poppeil works at the one in Corvallis so hopefully he will respond to this post. Getting to fish for your tank, tidalsculpin, I was at school yesterday during registration. Big mistake. Had my door open and was blasted with kids and parents all day long. Needless to say not much was accomplished, however it was pretty neat that 3 year olds were looking at my tank yelling Nemo and Dory!!! Might be something to the popular fish as starters. Spayne my Red Knob evil star is rocking in the tank. He may be reef evil but still pretty cool. Luckily no clams in that tank. Tidalsculpin, if you make it to the BBQ make sure you pull up a chair and we can chat. If a really tall guy is talking to me (DROCK) just ignore him.....LOL
  22. Yeah I got a black and white one that was a hitchhiker also. A bizarre one to try to explain to the students. Once again it is all about diversity!!
  23. Hey sorry about not responding earlier. I teach 6th and 8th integrated science. I see the tank in two different ways. 1. You want eye candy and extreme interest without alot of discussion. Basically a tank just set up for interest. 2. You are going to teach out of your tank. i.e. Phylums of all the animals except reps, amphibs, mammals. etc. Here is what I have found. Kids like Blue tangs (Dory), Nemo (perculas) Anemones, sea horses, starfish, crabs and shrimp. Stay away from seahorses. (very high maintenance) won't make it over extended periods of time without food. Kids bored with sps if you want an eye candy tank. Very entrigued if you are going for the phylum approach. My tank (120) has a good representation of fish types. Blue tang, clowns and anemones, trigger, squirrel fish, red sea tang, clown blennie, lawnmower blenny, stars, nudibranchs, clean up crew. I use this tank to show basic fish phylum. I have frag tanks that I use for experiments and teaching other phylums like sponges, corals, mollusks etc. I hope this helps. Watch your water quality. I have to bring water from home. RO/DI plugs up with school water. I like the thought of sand sifter, burrower, 2 spot goby, shows good variety in a species and diversification. Salt water tanks are a great way to teach because it is an easy way to show actual examples. We also do testing on coral growth. (lighting, etc.) Also my special students who get kicked out of there other classes because of behavior come into my room and clean tanks and putz around with the tanks. Sometimes I just let them stare at the tanks and cool down. Sorry I am really going to town on this thread but I have strong feelings on this topic. The club is great about supplying you with stuff. I will also throw down to your needs. Please pm me anytime you want. I am pretty crummy about reading threads. Hope to see you at the BBQ. I will be the one acting like a middle-schooler. I promise to be quiet during the speaker. LOL. Let me know if you have any problems. roger, Mr. S ps. Hey jody, my school tank could really use some sweet looking zoos!!! heh heh heh
