talkalot82
I have a crab that looks like an emerald crab but is red. Someone told me emerald crabs can change colors due to what they eat. Is this true?
Rick
Not sure on the changing colors thing however I have seen reddish colored ones in the LFS. (Just saw one a couple of days ago) I was told that it was dependent upon the area they came from. I've also heard that the diet can change the colors of other creatures (fish, etc.) though so I wouldn't doubt it. If it looks just like an Emerald Crab but is reddish color then I would guess that it is one. Do you have a pic?
bbatman99
It could be an anemone crab.
Rick
IMO the anemone (porcelain) crab looks quite a bit different. Just in case though here is a pic of one.
dsoz
Yes, emerald crabs can be red. I have heard them called "ruby" emeralds. It can be part genetics, part diet, and part environment. I have the feeling (very uneducated) that it is probably more genetic variation. If you let it eat what is in your tank, and it changes color over time then let me know if it is environmental and diet related. dsoz
Zoolander
I have a red and a green in my tank. I bought them both as emerald crabs at the time, I was told it was just a red emerald crab.
Nate213
Search for strawberry crab. I have a strawberry crab and they look very much like an emerald. I have read that they are very similar. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?aid=
undrtkr_00
Doran mentioned this to me once. Can't remember if he said they are the same species just different variety, or slightly different species. Perhaps he'll chime in. I dig my emeralds. For a long time I had two, but they both totally stayed in hiding. Put a new one in my 29g and he is often out and in view - fun to watch. CA2OR
I also have a red emerald crab. Pretty cool. A pic would help. It could be one of those strawberry crabs too.
