  1. Well the long and short of it is that the author found a plausible explanation for growth patterns of coral based on flow models and how they are diffused relative to velocity. The theory being that the corals would grow in a manner to maximize food capture. It's a good theory based on solid assumptions but it is unfortunately a qualitative exolanation. Which is a researchers way of saying "This all sounds good but I can't actually back it up with statistical analysis" Two things I thought were .. huh, this would actually mean corals are more compact in high flow (less need to maximize food capture) and two, I think this may be related to really low flow scenarios as the units of flow (cm/s) seems really low to me. We always used meters/sec for stream velocities and even slow moving streams (slower than my wavemakers at their lowest setting) were much higher than the flow numbers shown in the report. Meaning there may be a threshold that this theory brakes down. But as Sean mentioned, this may be entirely too geeky for most peeps. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  2. found this... pretty enlightening. and for those that can't endure journal articles... there is even pictures!!! http://scholar.google.com/scholar_url?url=https://dr.ntu.edu.sg/bitstream/handle/10220/10212/379.%2520Effect%2520of%2520nutrient%2520diffusion%2520and%2520flow%2520on%2520coral%2520morphology.pdf%3Fsequence%3D1&hl=en&sa=X&scisig=AAGBfm1eBAu1uuMfEqtqmcr6yIYpdLMw0g&nossl=1&oi=scholarr Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  3. well in plants.. the apical meristem, it is controlled by hormones.. auxin to be specific. I would think that it has to hormonal as well. My curiosity was peaked when i read that frags grow faster when placed on their side (even though every single one i see on this site are always vertical) that leads me to think there is some type of hormone that is being produced in the newly growing tissue that regulates other growth. But alas, this is all just guessing on my part and projecting my botanical knowledge on to coral. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  4. Do corals exhibit tropism? That is, a direct response to environmental conditions; in this case flow? Plants in windy areas will have thicker stems.. because the tissue in the stem is being torn by the wind and reparing itself. Curious to know if coral exhibit the same thing... and more interesting..how? . Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  5. This is one of those.. WYDSIWYG Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  6. Uggh. Maybe i will just have an aptasia tank Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  7. I'm leaning towards yes. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  8. oh my god... if you cant notice it, then you must have one dead nose!! man oh man.... bad! Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  9. wherr is it located? Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  10. ok, so i knew it was going to smell a little bad. i have been on the beach at low tide, hell, i even worked on a commercial fishing boat (trust me, there was no shower, everything smelled). But nobody told me that skimmate smells like mexican vacation vomit that was put in a plastic bag and placed in the sun for a week! cleaned our a full cup for the first time. hmmm, what does that smell like?. SNIFFFF.. OH MY GOD! [emoji1] Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  11. thanks for the beautiful clowns Randall!! Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  12. kudos to Xmas for the hot tip. I'll throw one out as well, when drilling plastic with a hole saw, run the drill in reverse to get the hole started. This prevents the teeth from "grabbing" the plastic and chewing everything up. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  13. nice!! Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  14. with a 120 you will be fine with absolutely nothing. If you just have to do something... and your tank runs parallel with the floor joists... then simply blocking them together with 2x8 is more than enough to spread the load. (blocking between the joists). without a footing, pyramid blocks don't offer a lot of structural support unless you have a lot of them Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  15. drilling is easy if it's not tempered. diamond bit from Amazon and a bottle of water. Drilling tempered glass goes really well for about 10 seconds... not all 55 gal are tempered as previously suggested. I drilled a friend's 55. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  16. well if your wife is worried about a tank exploding I would steer more towards acrylic. It is many x stronger than glass. I'm not trying to convince you of acrylic over glass but if strength is the number one concern.. then acrylic is where you should be looking. There are reasons that huge glass tanks are hard to find. 17. you could always buy two 75 gallon glass aquariums, take then apart and glue them back together on a plywood base. 4x4x2 tank.. $300 all in? Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  18. scratches in acrylic are easily removed. scratches in glass... umm no. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  19. Sean, I will dump a kitchen garbage full of shavings on your lawn. it will be like a white Christmas Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  20. it's back. man that would make an awesome ozzyman video of there is a copy without the words on the screen Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  21. good to know. the Honda is spend for sure. on a slightly different note, I was actually researching whole house back up generators. they are a LOT cheaper than I thought they would be. 1500 to 2k gets you a pretty decent one. it detects if your power is off and automatically turns on Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  22. FYI.. if you want THE gold standard of quiet generators then the Honda EU2000ie is what you want. it has a quiet mode that throttles down based on power need. I have one and it is very very quiet. The last forever and people love them. it does come at a cost though.. 1k new. $800 used. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  23. wife/girlfriend was on call.last night so I listened to 90's rap music (Emminem is the secret to my youthful glow) and stayed up till like 3am working on the ultimate DIY power station of doom. It took so long as I have found a way to completely stop most, if not all of the frustrations commonly encountered with tank management. stay tuned!!
