  1. I agree it looks like a calcium deposit. That usually is related to dosing two part in the wrong proportion and having the CA level rise but could have to do with the high salinity. For what it's worth that is most likely to happen on a heater just like you saw.

On a site note, whenever you get up and running I can give you a few frags if you want to test out the tank before buying the high end stuff.

  2. I agree that nutrient crashes are problematic just like like alk swings. With nutrients going lower or higher isn't always a problem but zero is a problem. When I had nitrate go to zero I dosed sodium nitrate and then phosphate fell to 0 and I had more problems. Now I dose both and test daily if I'm messing with either nitrate or phosphate level.

If you read the neo phos bottle you will probably be confused like I was the first time. Once you realize that carbon nitrate and phosphate all interact then it makes more sense. I would caution anyone about dosing phosphate or nitrate without testing daily and having a good handle on how they interact.

I think staying off zero for phosphate is important. All that said there is some interaction with Alk too. The higher the Alk you run typically the more sensitive the system seems to be to nutirents dropping.

For what it's worth I have a heavily stocked tank and feed pretty decently but still have nitrates that drift down once in a while. I think it's a combination of the refugium which helps pH and the marinen pure block I have in the sump.

  3. I'd like to get a frag of just about anything. There are a few in particular I'd love to get (Cash or trade).

    Wish list:
    JF fox flame
    Strawberry shortcake
    Red planet

I've got bunch of things that I'll take some pictures of since not all have names that I know.

    Zoa's:
    Rastas
    Toxic palys
    Watermelon
    Gobbstoppers
    WWC purple monster
    Bam bams
    Some others without names

    SPS:
    Orange Monti cap
    Blue Digi (mini colonies)
    ORA spongeodes
    Orange setosa
    Tubbs stellata
    WWC Yellow tips
    Hollywood stunner chalice
    Pokerstar Monti
    Idaho grape monti
    Sunset monti
    Purple w/ green base acro

    LPS:
    Green hammer branching
    Candy cane / trumpet

  4. I finally tried to take a picture last night although the lights were ramping down. Someday I have to figure out how to take a decent picture. I mounted it horizontally which makes this a little more challenging.

    1. total system volume, approx 265g

    2. what kind of lighting, 4x OR 247b LED + 4x55w T5

    3. how you keep alk and cal stable, calcium reactor w/ fx-stp peristaltic

    4. how old your tank is, ~1.5 yr

    5. rate your tank stability on a 1-10 scale, 7 (Alk is steady, Phos / Nitrate ride around a little)

  5. You might need to get the magnesium up first in order to get the calcium to stay up. I think a one time shot for magnesium should be fine and then slowly raise the calcium. I remember BRS dosing videos talking about magnesium dosing being periodic and larger isn't an issue.

  6. That's a good point to bring up. When I was dosing nitrate my phosphates dropped initially so I dosed Phosphate too until both started to rise. I think you have to do this until the system is carbon limited (if I recall the term correctly).

It's kinds of the same concept as carbon dosing in a way. When you dose carbon nitrates will drop and so will Phosphate. There is a relationship called the Redfield ratio that gives the proportional relationship.
