  1. Wow, more than 2 lanes on the freeway? You certainly aren't in Portland anymore. Why is there a hole in the roof of Cowboys Stadium? So God can watch his team play.
  2. Sweet. I'd love to have a huge shark tank, but the alimony payments would be brutal. In college, I worked one summer at a fish store with a 5,000 gallon tank with two good size sharks. I loved feeding those things.

    STARBURST CAP

Oh man, I had completely forgotten about this cap. Thanks for bumping.
  4. The last pic in the first post - - is that that the ORA german? Been looking to pick up one of those...
  5. I notice that the front vertical center brace for the stand was added after the rest of the stand was built (since it's a different color). Were you hoping that you wouldn't need that brace - that the top support would be strong enough, or were you always intending to add it? It's a detailed question, I know, but I'm getting ready to build a stand myself (though only 48") so was just wondering. Thanks. It's looking very nice - I can't wait to see the granite added. You're very brave to drill holes through the exterior. I was thinking of cutting a hole for a fan / heat vent, but I think my wife would kill me.
  6. Third. Every time I leave Tim's I feel guilty that I've gotten such great stuff for so little $$.
  7. Down in Salem - it's a garage shop, but very nice. Check out his Sponsor Forum for more info - The Premium Aquarium.
  8. Is this that different that just trading corals? (and with that list, we should talk) Anyone that I have ever traded corals with has an open door with me to get a frag of either piece if anything ever happens to theirs - for whatever reason. But the idea in general to get pieces of your corals our there in case of a crash is a good one.
  9. Stopped by Garrett's on the commute back from Corvallis today and checked out the new place. It looks awesome. If you haven't been there, you really should check it out. I needed to pick up a big cleaning crew update (being in Corvallis during the week is playing havoc on the tank upkeep). Garrett hooked me up with a big selection - taking the time to give me a couple of this and one-or-two of that. A nicer or more humble guy I haven't meet - in or out of the fish business. Plus he's got some insane stuff in right now. I could resist a frag of the $500 efflo - man that thing is gorgeous. I was eyeballing it in his disply in the old shop, and couldn't resist grabbing a frag of it - I need another frag like I need a whole in the head (but I'd rather have the frag). Oh, and he's got the smallest pipefish you've ever seen. Someone's got to pick that up. It's smaller than a toothpick, very cool. Anyway, thanks again Garrett.
  10. Interesting on them surviving and interceptor treatment, must be tough buggers. You can try the tonic water trick, and then just be prepared to get him right back into some salt water. But I would think that would be 50/50.
  11. It would kill all the crustaceans in your tank - crabs, shrimp, pods. I would think it would do the trick, if it's worth it.
  12. Will pistol shrimp come out of their hole and hunt/forage enough to get caught in a trap? The only thing that I've heard is a bit of a nuclear option... determine which rock they are in, the take the rock out of the tank and pour tonic water/seltzer onto/into the rock and they'll run out. I would try other options first. But I thought I'd mention it.
  13. bump - will be at Garrett's tomorrow evening and should get into Portland around 6:30. If anyone wants something from Garrett, I'd be happy to transport.
  14. Oh yeah, that's not how I read it - just reassuring (well, attempting) that the unusual growth pattern didn't mean it wasn't the ORA. That's it on the upper right, right? I don't think that's too low at all. I think the light requirements of the birdsnest are slightly less than acros. It's pretty close to the top, there. I think it's fine there.
  15. Stop rhyming, and I mean it...
  16. That's the thing, there are 100 variables that can affect the growth patter/color - so I wouldn't be too quick to say it's not what someone said it was
  17. That's a pretty one, to be sure - one of the nicer that I've seen. Hopefully it stays that vibrant as it grows out.
  18. The thing is, I don't you'll ever get rid of them manually - there will always be a few you miss, and then they'll repopulate (frisky little buggers). I'm not aware of any chemical eradicator. The 14 you caught are probably 1% of the population in your tank.
  19. Tri-colors can turn brown/white in the lower branches/middle. If you're lucky, and have good water conditions and lighting, it will stay more solidly purple. The "bonsai" name is a reference to a specific coral from GARF, the Purple Bonsai. But there are a zillion purple w/green polyp acro's. 'Tri-color' is more of a generic term for purple with green polyps. Tyree has a nice Tri-color, but again, very common color morph. Technically (not that any one cares) it's only a GARF Bonsai if the frag came from that specific mother colony. This distinction is lost locally. Apparently, this it today's soapbox, for me.
  20. The ORA Green and the ORA BoP have a more rounded growth pattern and don't have the sharp ends and don't intertwine as much. That is an odd, vertical growth pattern, though. Looks more like a Birdsnest to me than a Millie. But as for getting the right name attached to a coral - people just toss the names around left and right lately. Any BN with green polyps is called the ORA Green - like calling a bandage a Band-aid.
  21. Congrats and welcome to the forum. you might want to consider getting rid of the crushed coral (did someone already mention this). It's a nitrate factory as it traps a lot of decaying food and doesn't allow the same bacterial colonization as sand. Using sand is the standard now, it's readily available and you can get a small amount of live sand to seed yours. It might be easier to transition out now as you're still setting things up and your tank hasn't cycled. Just a suggestion. Welcome and enjoy - it's an addictive hobby.
  22. Garrett, will you be around Thursday late afternoon? oh, and for Portlanders, I can carry any orders placed with Garrett as long as you can pick them up Thursday night.
