  1. I attended a school here in oregon where a school shooting took place. (of course you all remember good ol' kip kinkel) Up until that point in my life i figured school was one of the safest place on earth. When you are a little kid and you are getting bullied near school you could always run there for protection from a teacher or some other authority figure. After that day i never looked at a school the same way. I saw teachers and administrators as ordinary human beings just as vulnerable to violence as us kids. I lost a good friend that day and will never forget seeing the panic and fear on the faces of not only the students but also the teachers. I am as much for protecting our kids as anyone. And since it seems like the majority of the perpetrators of these crimes dont intend to make it out alive, that stiffer penalties is not really an option. The only option is tighter security of the schools themselves. I hate to see a future with metal detectors and armed guards but as a future teacher I see this as the only viable alternative. I would never wish anyone to go through the kind of panic and terror that a school invasion causes. But andy and the others are right.....the statistics dont lie and the media in this country is a whoremongering monster out for nothing less than sensationalizing stories to gain ratings and market share so they can line the pockets of thier execs. thanks for reading my rant....just my .02
  2. dolphins dont eat enough fish to justify slaughtering them by the thousands.....truly sad that the most peaceful animals reside in the oceans of the world but they are the most targeted directly by hunters and indirectly thru pollution.
  3. man i cant wait to get to the valley in the spring.....i am leery of setting up even my 40 gallon right now cuz I dont want to have to move it and cuz everything i need has to be shipped. :( but once i get back to the right side of the mountains i can start convincing the wife we need a 120....lol so for now i guess i will just have to live vicariously thru you guys' tanks!
  4. what light are u using? and what kind of skimmer?
  5. hes your very own "nicole richie" yellow tang!
  6. glad you caught it in time! but on a lighter note- you may wanna check your detritus level cuz im pretty sure he shat himself! I know i would!
  7. lol....i think i am going t-5....less heat and from what i have seen you can keep anything as long as its placed high enuf up
  8. filter pad is better....that way after your fish gets better you can ditch the pad and when someone gets sick again u can start with a fresh batch of water and a new pad.....would be cheaper than replacing LR....
  9. i know shipping from eugen to bend thru ups ground is a one day deal and is cheap....should be similar for portland no?
  10. heres a rough idea of my tanks footprint......back panel is approx. 24" long and 20" high. then has four side panels...and matching front panel....looks like a hexagon but with unequal sides. was thinking of two returns and one drain in back panel and one return in each of two back angled panels. would this give me enough flow? And how do i get 4 returns into tank out of 1 return pump? I am looking at about 2-2.5 feet of head on return. so how big of pump do i need? 55 gal total water volume (15 sump and 40 disp.) first time drilling a tank so bear with my noob questions here! Plus i am looking into weather the bottom is drillable because some arent tempered and mine had no sticker saying it was( none in store did either), cuz if its drillable i would prefer my drain thru bottom. thanks in advance for any help guys!
  11. so you did that with a 45 mm glass hole saw? I want to drill my 40 stretch hex but was unsure of which size bit to use for 1" bulkheads. And, does anyone have any suggestions as to how many holes and where to put em? I am using a 15 gallon sump and want minimal PH's (if any) in my tank.
  12. yep....I lived in eugene/springfield for about 14 years and have been living here for 2 years now....I love the sun but I HATE the snow!
  13. might give sean a call at cichlids and salt in springtucky....but you probably already tried the local LFS i am assuming
  14. driveway heat? isnt that ice melter? magnesium chloride?
  15. LOL....not exactly the "valley" people i meant...but it'll do! Actually to tell the truth i miss the rain and seeing the leaves change color! but planning on moving back that way possibly to lebanon or salem next spring so i can finish college.
  16. probably a golf course employee like a caddy or something....maybe a greens maintenance.....he probably got it home and realized it wasnt a new prize for the raffle and felt guilty and brought it back.....very strange though!
  17. is the stand for your main display or to hold the other tanks in the back area? Either way why not build it from wood and save some $$$?
  18. maybe if you join then spayne can send an email to either of the two lfs or call them for you to show that you paid?
  19. i never thought of that .......with only a 40 gal display do you think i could swing that? less jugs for me to carry around .lol
  20. from what i understand wet skimming is more effective at keeping the nasties out of your water but requires more maintenance than dry correct?
  21. nah....if theres no macroalgae in it yet (good algae) then dont bother.
  22. ahh....you poor valley people and your lack of sunshine! even when its snowy over here its usually sunny......colder than &%#&*#@ but sunny! lol
  23. if its the bulkheads that thread into each other then teflon tape should do the trick
  24. light is really just for asthetics during the cycling process unless you got some sort of fuge where a macroalgae would need light. you may or may not get a diatom or algae bloom since your LR and LS is from an established tank im guessing. But lights off may help keep algae from growing too much. Just remember that algae is one of the simplest plant lifeforms in terms of care requirements so even ambient room light may give it enough to grow. plus if you are using ro-di water and your params stay stable you shouldnt see much algae.
  25. you could try sealing it up or eventually salt creep will stop the leak!! lol....actually i am not sure what to use to seal them...teflon tape seems like a good idea but if the tank is already full then you would have to drain it wouldnt you?
