  1. My tank has all Sch. 80 bulkheads, is it okay to switch to Sch. 40 for the unions? I would think this is a higher pressure point as well.

BTW not sure I understand your post exactly - so with a good glued seal, slip is better - but with teflon tape threaded will be just fine, correct??

Yeah, sch 40 unions will be fine...

correct threaded will do fine, you asked which is better a better seal and I think glued would be better, but threaded will get the job done...

  2. My 70g has all threaded bulkhead adaptors (9 total) and I'm going to have a union' date=' ball valve or gate valve right behind each one. Some of these will be running pretty good flow from a closed loop w/Sequence Dart pump. What is more leak proof or are they the same?[/quote']

If you get a good glued seal, then threaded will be...but as long as you use teflon tank you will not have any issues with threaded and the advantage to threaded is they can be reused.

Just a heads up, Lowes carries schedule 40 dual union ball valves, if you are going with those, they will save you a ton of money over the sch. 80 that you find on all the plumbing sites...

  3. Twitter, Unfortunately, there are significant problems with nuclear power plants:

Mining and purifying uranium has not, historically, been a very clean process.

Improperly functioning nuclear power plants can create big problems. The Chernobyl disaster is a good recent example. Chernobyl was poorly designed and improperly operated, but it dramatically shows the worst-case scenario. Chernobyl scattered tons of radioactive dust into the atmosphere.

Spent fuel from nuclear power plants is toxic for centuries, and, as yet, there is no safe, permanent storage facility for it.

Transporting nuclear fuel to and from plants poses some risk, although to date, the safety record in the United States has been good.

These problems have largely derailed the creation of new nuclear power plants in the United States. Society seems to have decided that the risks outweigh the rewards.

Nuclear power is a terrible idea until someone can find a safe disposal methood for the nuclear waste.

These reactors produce electricity, but they also give off carbon-14, tritium, and plutonium -239. Carbon-14 has a radioactive half-life of 5730 years, and tritium has a half-life of 12.3 years. These reactors do not give off carbon-dioxide gases, but they certainly cannot be designated as “clean” or “green.”

The spent fuel from nuclear reactors is extremely radioactive and dangerous to all living things. It contains

some 200 deadly radioactive elements as byproducts of the fission process, such as uranium, cesium, strontium, and iodine. They are radioactive for thousands and thousands of years, for longer than recorded human history. The half-life of Plutonium-239 is 24,390 years, and for Plutonium-242 the half-life is 387,000 years.

Currently, much of these wastes are stored on site near reactors, in pools of water for cooling, and some older wastes in dry storage. Over the last 60 years some 225 million tonnes have been accumulated in the world, some 34,000 tonnes in Canada alone.

I am not saying I disagree with you, but I have heard completely the opposite of everything you are saying...Penn and Teller actually did one of thier "bullsh!t" shows on nuclear power and touched on all the issues you mentioned...

Yes, Chernobyl is a worst case scenario...look at the Exxon Valdez and recently the oil spill in the San Fransisco Bay...I am willing to bet that if oil was not already a predominant way to fuel things, people would show the Exxon as a horrible reason to go with oil... Not saying that Chernobyl is not worse then a huge oil spill...but everything has it issues, some more then others, but I guess that is all relative as well...

  4. Hey everyone:

I have 2 returns from my sump. I have the center overflow because my tank is a cube type walk around tank and the returns go up through the center of the overflow and out the side with those bendable nozels that you can aim the direction you want the flow to go. Right now if I have a power outage the water will flow down the returns into my sump and fill it up..which is ok as long as I dont put the returns to far down in the tank so it will only siphen so much to the sump. I have a line on my sump to fill up to and it will not overflow as it is. Is there a check valve I can get to go in the return line to prevent a back siphen? I know I could drill a hole in the return but seems a check valve would be better then I could actually aim my returns where I want without worry. It is the clear plastic 3/4 inch tubeing plummed from my sump to the bottom of the tank where it connects to plastic pvc. So the check valve needs to be for the plastic clear tube.

    I know good question right.

    Jay

I would just drill a couple of siphon break holes just below the water line and that will solve the problem...

  5. Brandon' date=' that right side shot is totally cool!! I love that leopard wrasse. is looking great.Great fish!!![/quote']

Lowman, thanks for the compliments!!! yeah the right side shot is nice with the exception of the stupid rock anemone...but I will get around to getting rid of it...Yeah, I have two leopards, male and female...they are not mated but hang out together and are a "couple" I think :) they are great fish, my favorite fish out there!!!!

  6. Great idea for a thread Drock!!! Here are a couple I just quickly snapped off...I did not want to mess with the tripod and settings on the camera...It is still very young, but most are LE frags and you can only buy them in frags, so I am waiting for them to grow out.

  7. reefgeek, it is my understanding that using electric cars is far less polluting. We are already producing pollution at powerplants. If everyone had an electric car, we would only be using one source. Therefore, we would not be polluting by using electricity for our homes, etc, as well as gasoline for our cars. Does that make sense?

You are correct, that there would be an influx of pollution/emissions from electricity producing facilities but I think emissions would be much less than continued use of gas. I hope someone with more knowledge can jump in.

True, but this is why I cannot understand why there has not been huge investments in solar, wind, biomass, geothermal and other "natural" or renewable energy sources. I dont think the sun is going away anytime soon and I think there will continue to be wind in many areas for a long time.

If we as a country really wanted to make alternative energy happen, we would. Investing in renewable energy would create a ton of jobs and lead other countries to follow suit. However, most of these technologies will create some sort of pollution, directly or indirectly. The bottom line is that they will produce far far less than what we are currently using.....coal.

Honestly, doesnt that seem wrong that we are still burning coal in 21st century?

Twitter, you brought up another huge point. Think about our foreign policy if we were not dependent on oil. Would we have such a huge presence in the middle east? I dont think so.

All of these things put together gives me a headache because it seems so logical what we need to do. However, the older i get the more I realize that the world is not logical no matter how much I would like it to be.

I think the most promising form of energy is geothermal... Solar really has it limitations, my grand parents have used solar to heat their pools they have had over the years, and it has worked out well, because they only used the pool in the summer time, when there was sufficient sun, but other then that they would need to heat the water with electricity...Wind takes up lots and lots of precious land to have the giant windmills, so that could have a very negative effect on the wild life that is in those areas...

  8. So I have been seeing alot of things on TV about hybrids, electric cars, and just saw a new one for honda's hydrogen car...So I am thinking out loud here and have done no research into this what-so-ever, but thought I would see what others have to say...Everyone talks about all these resources that could be used instead of gas, but those would either ran out or would cause other forms of global warming...

    If everyone switched to:

E-85: There would not be enough corn to sustain everyone driving, also it would burn more fuel overall, since the corn needs to be driven to places and can not be pumped through a pipe line, like oil can.

Electric/hybrid cars- I see commercials where they say to turn your electric thermostat up in the summer and down in the winter and if everyone did this, we would save a whole bunch of carbon emissions because of less electricity...so if everyone had electric cars, would we not be producing more of a just a different kind of carbon emission?

Hydrogen cars: (I think this is the most promising out there) however, if they are producing moisture and if everyone drove them, would there be any worry that we would change the climate to rain alot more which could cause some major issues with always having an overcast rainy day...

I also saw a commercial for CSX trains, who claim they can carry a ton of frieght 420miles on a gallon of fuel...I have no idea what kind of fuel, but this might be something to look into for our cars, but maybe it has to do with the type of motor it uses and it can not fit in average cars...

Again, I have not studied any of this, just thinking out loud here, cause I think this is a great thread and has been very good about staying on track and not turning into a flame fest...

  9. I counted 31 votes total. I thought there would be more votes' date=' or maybe I'm just imagine there's more people than that here - personally I'd rather see more "I don't like anys" than not voting at all...[/quote']

It seems like there would be more votes, considering the number that we have as active users, but you will only get about 20-40% who will actively participate in this forum...Alot of people just come to read and that is about it :) 31 is actually a decent number (clap)

  10. Brandon Id like a frag of the encusting monti if you have one. Would you accept store credit/coral trade?

In my home tank Ive got a few areas of rock pretty close to the rock. Im using encrusting corals to cover the rocks in these areas so I can still get the magnet by. Hopefully a mix of monti's all over will look sweet.

Yeah we can work something out for sure...

  11. I have been looking into these, but I have heard conflicting reports on how noisy they are. Some say they are silent, others say noisy. I am looking to get 2x Koralia #1's. What's the consensus on noise vs a standard powerhead like a maxijet or hagen with similar output?

I heard that early versions came without the rubber gasket to dampen noise. Are all of these out of the chains of commerce or do I have to watch out for this when ordering?

there is no noise what so ever...

  12. And they are loud!

I think the Tunze wavebox is the best i've seen still.

I have never seen the wave box in action...and I know Rich said that unless you have a long tank for these (and I would assume most wave creators) they do not offer much use to the tank....

I think I will just be getting a Wavy Sea and a Tunze nano 6055 on a single controller and call it day...

I was just hoping this thing might yield some positive results for only 200 bucks, but guess not.

  13. I do not think everyone is on a diet....well...maybe, lol. I hate thanksgiving, cause I do not enjoy the food, I am a very picky eater... I know, I know (wife)(wife)(wife)(wife)(wife) , so I will be probably be having a nice big t-bone as my main piece of meat. I do enjoy spending the time with family however, that is my favorite part.

  14. thats one expensive wave....not even random...i dont seem why you would want that thing....just a big wave the same size the same time over and over....wheres the random....i thought thats the whole reason of wave action is create random sizes and intervals....ocean motion is a glorified SCWD...AKA WAVE MAKING DEVICE....that thing is a joke....surge bucket way cheaper....no you dont have to drill...just make room for a monster box....blah!

Wow, your super positive (whistle) :) , Have you ever swam in an ocean? its a constant wave that moves back and forth and as the wave breaks against the rock it creates random flow. Also another great thing about the wave is it tends to move the entire column of water which usually does not leave alot of dead spots, unlike regular pumps and power heads...

as for a surge bucket...most people do not have room for those and at least the ones I have seen do not move the entire water column.

  15. I'm just talking in comparison to your 200 dollar box that only creates a wave and very limited water movement elsewhere. 400 bucks would be a pump that would make the same wave with alot of water movement.

Both seem awfully expensive, but that box for 200 seems ridiculous for what you get.

I agree that is alot of money for what it does...but you do not have to drill the tank and purchase extra bulk heads (and if you get good ones, they are about 25 each...), but I completey understand what you are saying...however...this is a wave device...I was more curious to see what it does, if it would have put out a very good wave, then I think it would have been a great investment, but I do not think it is worth the money...

http://www.oceansmotions.com/tsunami.wmv , would really only be good on an in wall or if you do not mind eye sores on each side of the tank...but it is sweet!
