  1. That's what I thought at first, but I also want to be able to keep less light hungry creatures in the lower regions. I heard with T5s you can keep clams on the sandbed in 16-18" deep tanks, and I definitely don't need that amount of light. Would a 24" deep tank with 4 (6 bulbs in the future) not get enough light lower down even for shrooms and leathers and such?
  2. Well, my husband has agreed, so project "larger tank" is a go in the near future! I'm trying to decide between a 75G and a 90G AGA megaflow. They have the same footprint (48x18"). The 75 is 20" high, the 90 is 24" high. My lighting will be a 48" T5 Tek fixture (4 bulbs) that I already have. I'm aiming for a mixed tank, with low light creatures on the bottom and a few sps higher up. I might add another 2 T5 bulbs (some kind of retro) later on. For people who own one or the other size tank, what do you like about it and what do you wish were different? I've stood next to both tanks in LFSs, and can reach to the bottom of both, easier in the 75, but not really a problem in the 90. Since this will definitely be "the tank" as long as we live in this house (which will probably be a while), I don't want to regret my purchase down the road. Are the extra 15G worth it? I've had a couple of opinions already, but would like a few more! -Susanne
  3. My cheapo skimmer (I think it's a PCI, bought it used) is actually doing really well. It made an annoying hissing sound at first, until I attached a piece of air line to the air inlet. Now I don't hear it at all.
  4. I was wondering about paint! What type did you use?
  5. Thanks! How about ABS. Is that safe for aquarium use?
  6. Thanks! The locline that came with my 40G probably has everything I'll need then. Now if only they had black pvc!
  7. Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I was looking at your pvc/locline return setup. Can you tell me which pvc parts you used to attach the locline? And do you use the megaflow return, too, or are you using both of the pre-drilled holes as drains?
  8. Another vote for the Eheim! My 1262 is great and very quiet!
  9. Payment for 2 powerstrips sent via paypal! -Susanne
  10. Has it been decided how much to pay per unit, and is Joel the one collecting?
  11. Didn't Miles ask if they could be shipped to your shop, and if you could bring them to the BBQ? And then he would bring the Eugene ones back from there? Or am I dreaming that up?
  12. My husband has a premier paypal account, if that helps. I could collect the money and drop it off with you, Miles.
  13. I tried finding the website again, and discovered that I misread the info. They were actually talking about a dip with bleach. Here is the relevant part: Hyposalinity as a bath/dip is only effective in so much that lowered specific gravity causes the trophonts to drop off their hosts and encyst. Further, Clorox bleach at concentrations of 3 tsp. per four gallons have proven to not kill these resting stages. Obviously the pH-adjusted freshwater must need be drained and discarded between dips.
  14. One of the many websites I looked at during my "velvet" research. Anyway, would cleaning it out with vinegar and letting it sit dry for a while, possibly in the sun, not do the trick? Thanks to everyone for the info! -Susanne
  15. Actually, I think it does! 3% of 14.95 is only something like 45 cents.
  16. If it's the same unit, I'd love to save a little! Will be waiting for the final decision before paying. And thanks for bringing the Eugene stuff this way!
  17. Miles, can I pay you via paypal? And where would we pick them up? Portland doesn't work too well for me.
  18. I got peppermint shrimp when I had aptaisia, They did a great job, but also wiped out my stomatella snails completely! I love the stomatellas. They do a great job cleaning the rock and lay eggs and multiply. It was hard seeing them picked off one by one and go from having at least 100 to none at all. I ended up giving the peps away when all the aptaisia was gone. Now I have two apps in my 40G, and am probably going to try vinegar (what's the method used? Use straight vinegar in a syringe?). I tried taking the rock out and shooting boiling water on the place where the aptaisias were, but they came back after several weeks of no sign of them. -Susanne
  19. How do you get it ready and safe for the next inhabitant? I had a fish in quarantine that possibly died from velvet and I heard that even bleach doesn't kill that. I suppose leaving the tank empty for a week and sitting it out in the sun should do the trick? And the same with the equipment (heater, powerhead, filter)? -Susanne
  20. Thanks for the info! Is anyone else not getting email info for threads they've posted in anymore? I used to, but not lately.
  21. Can I ask a quick question about these? Are they "plug and play" or do you need to wire anything with these? I thought they were just like a powerstrip with switched outlets, but can't tell by looking at the info. Where are the actual outlets located on these and how far apart are they (need to know for timers and such)?
  22. I'd like 2 of them (was thinking of buying them from Tigerdirect), but this group buy sounds great!
  23. If only it would cool off at night! I didn't even turn on the fan in the window until 1am, since it was still hotter outside than inside before then. And then we have to set the alarm for 5am to turn the fan off and close the window, so we don't pull warm air in again. I can't even imagine what it takes to keep everything cool in your store!
  24. It went up to 107 in our little corner today and the house is currently about 80. Tanks are okay with frequent switching of ice bottles. The 1 Gallon water jugs are great and last a few hours. Are such large temp swings okay? I always thought it should not vary this much. I feel for you! It will probably arrive once the heat wave is over!
  25. How is everyone holding out in the heat? I've had to throw in frozen bottles all afternoon, since our little window a/c isn't quite cutting the mustard this time. It didn't cool off much last night, so we started out with a still fairly warm house in the morning. Fortunately, we were prepared with lots of bottles ready in the freezer.
