  1. The skimmer rocks big time, it continues to improve as time goes on and the junk its getting out is darker and darker. I'm really blown away with how much it gets out of the tank and how dark it is. As for the small cone; I wanted a skimmer that would allow me to get a bigger tank and the medium is rated for up to 400g so this will allow me growth. Plus I like a lot of fish and to feed a lot so I figured bigger could not hurt.
  2. I just use a pair of pliers and bend them a little, they will snap very easy.
  3. Mike, I wish I could but I really need the cash to pay for the new skimmer I bought... Rich
  4. One more bump, I really don't want to have to list this on RC but I guess I will have no choice if no one needs a skimmer...
  5. Not at all; I believe it LOTs of fish and lots of food and heavy skimming. I've always found I get better colors and growth that way.
  6. I actually I think it was a little less then that but I cannot remember. I spent a LOT of time testing the different times of mesh and the amount that was on there to get the best possible bang for the amount of the power draw. I have a bunch of the mesh left and I will include some with the skimmer if the buyer wants it. Also here are 2 videos of the skimmer running during the test with an air gauge. The first is both pumps together and the second is just one. As you can see the solo pump is around 12 or 13 lpm and both are a little over 20 lpm I think the 2 plugged together into the gauge actually restricted the air flow a bit. Also I included a picture of the mesh on the implellor so you can see what I used. Rich
  7. The skimmer is still available. I will reduce the price down to $450...
  8. The skimmer is right around 28 inches tall...
  9. Thank you! Yeah it was a lot of work and a lot of research that went into making it. Its hard for me to sell cause I probably put a good 80 or more hours into it. Oh and the sticker on it is one that a friend made for me, it says BAS Skimmers (Bad A$$ Skimmer). Rich
  10. If you want to talk about it or have question just PM and I'll give you my number... Rich
  11. Yeah as this is something that I custom built i don't have exact specs but they are just rough estimates anyway. I build it to handle a take up to 400 gallons...
  12. I might also consider some nice SPS or LPS pieces/frags instead of all cash...
  13. I need to sell my skimmer as I'm not using it anymore, its one that I made. It is a 10" diameter body made with high quality cast acrylic, the top is a custom made black acrylic cone with a twist lock flange for the neck and collection cup. The skimmer is powered by 2 Sedra 5000 meshwheel pumps and they pull around 1200 lph of air and are setup recirculating. This skimmer was only used for around a year and very well taken care of, it still works perfect and pulls a lot of very dark junk out. The only reason that I'm selling it is that I do not have the location or room in my new setup for a recirculating skimmer and I wanted to use an in-sump type. There are no cracks or damage at all, only some minor cosmetic uglies on it. I would like to sell it for $500 obo, I have well over $700 in materials in it and if you were to price a similar quality skimmer it would be more then $700... Please let me know if you have any question about it as I built it and know everything about it. Rich
  14. Just make sure that the timer is rated for the amount of amps that your ballast is pulling otherwise you could have a very potential fire hazard.
  15. From everything I have read you don't want to use any tank that had copper in it for a reef. It attaches itself to the material and is next to impossible to remove, the only way I heard to remove it was with a Hydrochloric acid \water mix...
  16. Tangs are doing great. I put some friends in there with them and everybody seems happy. Rich
  17. The Sedras are ok pumps for skimmers but there are a lot better pumps out there. I was never happy with the amount of air they pull compared to the power they use. The ehiems are a lot better then the Sedras. Also the Hagan utility pumps are really good for modding...
  18. I took a couple of pics this morning of the skimmer, its all broke in now and working great. I'm still messing around with the water level in it to get the right consistency.
  19. Thank you. I woke up this morning and it had a nice thick head of foam in the neck already so I'm excited to get it adjusted right now and skimming.
  20. The best info is on RC HERE is a link to the thread on them. The website for the skimmer is LINK.
  21. Well I've been busy with my house and have not had time to take more pics. But I ended up buying a new skimmer cause the one that I made was not working right as an insump model and I was not setup for inline. So, I bought an ATB cone skimmer, its the medium size one that is good for up to 400gallons. Its powered with an ehiem 1260 needlewheel impeller and pulls real good air, the best part is it only uses around 40watts of power so its very energy efficient. Because its a cone setup and there is no resistance on the bubbles it does not require the amount of air that you normally need for this size of skimmer. I just connected it tonight so it's still got a while of break in. Another good part its dead silent too. Here are some pics.
