  1. I would agree with everyone else that this seems like a mantis but if you haven't added anything besides frags on plugs then then that really doesn't fit. There are two types of mantis, smashers and spearers... I know very little about them but from what I remember smashers generally live on things like snails crabs etc. Yes they can crack thin glass but that's not really common. I do believe these kill fish but it's not as common as the spearer. The spearer type of mantis are the type generally known to primarily live on fish, for a mantis to survive three years without having things like this happening more often I find it hard to believe you have a mantis... You can try something meaty with a large mouth coke bottle with the top cut off and reversed or something similar, this way they climb in to go after the food but cant get back out. There are lots of tricks to catching a mantis, if you can locate his hole or what rock he's living in you can remove the rock and use a mixture of soda water and fresh ro water, the ph spike should drive him out of the rock... Do this in a bucket obviously... To find him your going to have to do as andy said and search for him at night... Mantis are extremely smart little critters and can be very elusive. But in all honesty I have my doubts about you having one in your tank since this just begun and you haven't been experiencing casualties like this over the past three years...
  2. This would be my thought too... How about posting your prams as well. Have you added any rock to your tank lately?
  3. I now own 3 Vortechs and I can't say a bad thing about them, you hardly notice them in the tank compared to most pumps and the massive amount of wide flow they produce is amazing. I'll be happy when the price eventually drops and when Neptune finishes making them controllable from my Apex.
  4. Mike, I'm about $200 desperate =) I think I've pretty much hit my bottom line on it. If it doesn't sell then it's not the end of the world and I'll just find a place around the shop to store it. Would make a pretty badass sump though! Glad to hear your enjoying the tank Mick, I'll keep on trying to find that wrasse for you...
  5. Wow... This is going to be sweet. Guess I'm going to need to take a trip back up to your place. Give me a buzz if you need any help.
  6. So a few of you have asked about them so I thought I'd give an update... So far I've seen some definite improvements from running the pellets. Late last year there was a painting crew at the school and while they were told specifically to stay away from the tank they obviously didn't listen well... One of them put a ladder or something behind the tank ripping the probes out of the sump and on to the floor. While I was in Florida I was periodicly checking on the tank via the controller and figured the AC was being left on at night because the tank was keeping temps from 75-78. Usually I keep that tank at 77-78 consistently without the use of a chiller. When I came back I went in and checked on the tank, the large emp was dead as well as the 4" Regal that I've been able to feed by hand for the past year and a half amongst a lot of sps that was dead or near dead... Something wasn't right... I finally noticed the temp probe wasn't in it's holder inside the sump, I put the probe back in only to find that the tank was pretty much a hot tub 92 degrees! The whole time I was in Florida the temp probe was reading the room temp and not the tank temp. Anyways... Since this happened there has been N&P problems from all the death that took place in the tank. By problems I mean Nitrates that were too high to measure on any test kits and po4 at .40 no that's not a typo... .40! on Travis' Hanna. After trying lots of things many 80 gallon water changes on a 120 gallon tank nothing was working, I tried the Neo Zeo system only to end up with a huge cyano outbreak. So as a last resort before tearing the tank down cooking the rock and starting the system over I decided to give the pellets a try. They've been in the system for about 3-4 weeks now and almost every bit of Cyano is now gone since the introduction of the pellets. I've done nothing else to the system to be positive on what's making the difference. I've yet to test the po4 on the Hanna but there has been a significant drop in no3 and while it's still high it's back to being measurable so I'm seeing an definite impact on the water quality. I've seen no negative impact on the tank and the bacteria that is colonized on the pellets is a nasty crazy mess but working! Nothing nasty in the tank what so ever like some have experienced with dosing vodka and mb7. All of the bacteria is contained in the reactor. I'll continue to update everyone on the progress with the pellets. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer... If your having problems with high N or P these might be a solution to helping to get you on the right track although if you are having high n&p you need to find the cause of the problem to actually fix it.
  7. I don't disagree with the fact that we're all contributing, I'd just be very interested to see an accurate study that shows HOW MUCH of an impact we're are contributing to the changes vs. a natural cycle that the earth is going through.
  8. I believe climate change is happening but I have yet to be sold on exactly why it's happening. Climate change has been a evolutionary cycle that the earth has gone through for as far as we can tell. With enough money anything is possible, presidents and politicians... even redheads!

I did notice that they do have a shop sabre cnc there after a little more looking around. Shop Sabre makes a good machine. My machine will be running a spindle and not a router.

Well for me it's a necessity for my business, I've spent thousands upon thousands of dollars having parts outsourced. Mainly because I didn't think I could actually build a machine that would hold the kind of tolerance I need for under $35k After having far too many issues with machine shops over the past year I decided I was really going to get on it and get a machine. I just can't deal with the stress and lack of flexibility anymore. The techshop looks like it would be a great thing for a hobbyist although nothing will compare to having your own machine to run parts on anytime you want or anytime you come up with an idea. Plus... I didn't see anything there about them having a cnc router or mill. Only a laser.

I'm working with a guy up in Canada who's going to build my machine for me. I was originally going to build my whole machine from 8020 but after some thought I want something thats a little more sturdy, so we're building this machine out of .5" 6061 The machine I'm building has a 24x60" cutting area. It's pretty much being purpose built for what we do here at my place. More than likely I'll be offering some diy skimmer, calcium reactor parts etc. when the machine has some downtime.
  12. Hey at least they are stoked on some sort of coral... Most people come over and ask what the wood thing is on the side of the tank. Once I show them its my hammerhead mag float they think that the coolest thing in the entire world... "Your tank looks beautiful, but that magnet cleaner thing is sooo cool!" Talk about frustrating!
  13. That should be expected, as far as training them... haha good luck with that! More than likely you will just piss it off more. Somewhere on youtube there is a video of a diver getting his ear bit off by a queen trigger, it was pretty rad!

I'm going to be starting one here pretty soon, it's now become a priority of mine.
  17. I have always disliked bowfront tanks, but this has seriously changed my opinion of how cool you can actually make a bowfront! Can't wait to see it all filled up!
  18. It's an older thank but I thought it was a fair price considering that most anyone that's seen the work James does knows he builds nothing but the best. The cube tank I ended up trading to Spectra to do some metal fab for a piece of machinery. The tank ended up going to Chewie and as far as I know he's still using it as an anemone tank.
  19. I agree, it looks like a type of Cyano.
  20. Wow, Brian was probably one of the nicest people I've ever met. To be honest I don't think the guy had a mean bone in his body. My condolences to his family.
  21. Haha... Sorry, go buy a msx skimmer then the other information will be useful =)
