Hi All,
Regrettably, our meeting and venue plans for the end of this month (Feb) fell through.
However, we are working on plans for our next meeting to be March 16th. Stay tuned!

I love this hobby. There are awesome products all over the place. I'd never heard of Reefboxx, but see the obviousness of it's use and value.
1. I see two manual switches in your setup. Did you add these, or they come with the setup? (got a link?)
2. Does it come with it's own power brick (to the wall), or do you re-use the brick that came with your pump?
3. I did some research, ReefBuilders did an article in 2022 when this product came out.
https://reefbuilders.com/2022/09/27/reefboxx-is-a-new-affordable-battery-backup-for-dc-reef-gear/
4. And the Reefboxx website says there's a version 2 coming out soon. Looks like it can natively handle 36v in, if desired. (that's three batteries in series). But the biggest selling point looks like it comes with Two outputs. I wonder if that means it needs a bigger input power brick?
Very interesting product, especially for pumps that don't offer the ecotech back up power port directly. (which feels like basically, every other pump/power head out there)
And here is an easy Ecotech battery replacement. This has an auto switch and uses a LiFePO4 battery instead of lead acid, so it lasts much longer. The one linked below is refurbished with a 2 year warranty. Way cheaper than Ecotech.
Here's the DC cable that fits into cigarette lighter outlet.

I added the switches. They make it easier when doing water changes etc ... now that the main power switch is backed up.

The system uses the power brick for your pump.
It's all working great so far.

Hi All,
I'm finally posting my setup to this thread. This is not as economical as Dave's setup. I'm using the Reefboxx automatic switch ($100) along with a LiFePO4 battery ($60 for 20ah or $130 for 50ah) a fancy smart (trickle) charger ($85) and a 12V to 24V voltage booster + cables ($30).
My return pump is 24V and most of the economical batteries are 12V. You can use a booster to get 24V or you can set up two identical 12V batteries in series to get 24V. I wanted a single battery in the space.
This system will run my return pump if the power goes out while I am away. The automatic switch detects the outage and keeps everything running on battery, and the trickle charger keeps the battery charged and maintained. This charger has a cool bluetooth function that allows me to check the status via an app on my phone. I do need to get a bigger battery as the 20ah battery isn't big enough.
The 20ah battery should run my 65W pump (at full power) for 7.4 hours while a 50ah battery should run it for 18.5 hrs, and a 100ah battery should run it for 37 hrs. Of course, if I was home, I would turn the pump speed down in order to get more run time.

I use All for reef. I like it.
I don’t have precipitation, and it is much nicer on my hose & pumps than kalc. I use powder and do mix it a little weak for calculating/pump reasons.
it is quit good at increasing both ca+ and alk.no potassium
What is your mix recipe? Maybe diluting it a little bit is the answer. Thanks!

I find all-for-reef to be a great product. It does have that tendency to precipitate once the solution dries out and does clog up the tubing so I opt to dose manually and I don't have to worry about everything else such as Mg.
I'm going to try to track Lou down and ask him about this. I wonder if it was diluted if it would work better in a doser.

Very nice!

I like their salt.
But I don't like All for Reef. It is hard to keep it in solution. It is always clogging dosing lines for me. I would be curious if others had a different experience.

Hi All:
See here for a brief write up that I did on my experiment with ammonia dosing.

No need to worry about toxicity when using such low doses. I’ve read that In reef tanks we like sub therapeutic doses, just to weaken rather than kill the bacteria.
We could dive deep into dosing….
I really like your comment about dips. I do much larger doses as dips instead of in tank treatment. I had brown jelly in torches, not any more. I remove and treat whenever my torches don’t look 5 ⭐️.
I had no idea Gonis get BJD!!!
Where do you get oxalinic acid?

This is a really low dose. In humans (we are 70% water) we do 500mg twice daily. You are not overdosing.
It is intended to be a low dose, since Arcobacter is very sensitive to Cipro.

Great graphs and correlation. The highest I CO2 I saw visually on your meter was slightly over 1000. I don't think I've ever seen 1200 on my own meter... I think I have a draftier house. But nothing like @Krux. His story of ice cold walls was .. 😞
Krux does produce a fair amount of hot air. 🤔

Bump, and a reminder to RSVP to me for directions to the meeting. Send me a PM and I will send you a map with the address.
Hope to see lots of folks there. The discussion of battery backups is useful and timely!

Wow really BJD can happen in goni too? Ill keep an eye out. Did you use both cirpo and oxolinic acid? Does it work better? And how long did dose your tank for?
I'm not sure which works better. I was only able to stop the issue in my system when I did the dips in addition to the in tank treatment. One time I treated the tank with cipro and one other time I treated the tank with Oxolinic Acid. The cipro dosing regimen I used was three total doses with a day in between each one. The Oxolinic Acid dosing regimen was the same. If I ever did it again, I would probably use 4 doses over a period of 8 days.

I do dose every day, 0.250 mg / L instead of the one they said. Maybe its too high? Should I cut back on it? Can too much cause BJD?
The higher dose could eventually cause dinoflagellates, but it will not 'cause BJD.' I have not dealt with this disease in torches, but in Goniopora. In Goniopora I was only able to stop it in the tank if I combined in-tank doses with 4-6 hour baths in concentrated cipro or Oxolinic Acid. I repeated the baths for the entire time that I was treating the tank. (High concentration for dip/bath was 1/2 of 500 mg cipro pill per gallon of tank water, and for Oxolinic Acid 2 g of OA per gallon of tank water.)
Good luck!

If I was a Lions fan I would not admit it publicly 😛
We're coming out of the woodwork now that our team is finally good, after all those years of record losers. I'm out and proud, baby!

Go Lions!
I grew up in Michigan watching them lose every Thanksgiving game, even when they had Barry Sanders. Finally, they have good players AND good coaching.
