Like a vinyl tile? That could work.

I meant ceramic so it sinks. Might be tricky to cut in a circle but usually tiles are like $5 each so you could mess a few up in the process without spending a ton.

I saw a thread where someone used some natural stone looking tile on a bare bottom tank and it actually looked pretty good. travertine tiles.

Did you 3D print them?  Cool option to have available for a DC conversion/pump replacement.

Yes but I lost access to my 3D printing 😞 Still have my box of stuff so I have a few left.

Thank you both, that's super helpful information. The VarioS-S4 looks like its the same price as the Bubble Blaster - does something have to be done to the VarioS to convert to needle wheel and Venturi for the skimmer?

Blue Z - I'll keep that in mind. I obviously love the reliability I've gotten from the Bubble Blaster so I'm interested in learning a little more about what that would like like as well.

For the Varios, you’d need this one to be setup as a skimmer pump with the Venturi

  3. Bubble blasters are great pumps, well made, and very quiet. You got a good one as it lasted nearly a decade! Given its age, The safest route would be complete replacement (not just the impeller). Always good to have the pump the skimmer is designed for but I hear ya on $280 being on the spendy side.

I always preferred DC pumps and have run them on all my skimmers pretty much since they came out. The part I like the most about them is they add an extra level of control you won’t have with the BB pump. BRS did a video on tuning skimmers that gets more into detail on how it can be advantageous to turn the pump speed down to reduce turbulence in the body while adjusting the skimmers outlet for the specific type of skim you are trying to achieve.

typically DC skimmers, especially the newer generation of them (sign wave versions) are basically silent.

A comparable DC pump by Jebao to your BB is something like a DCP5000 or 6500, which are in the $80-100 range. I used to sell pinwheel kits for these and may have one around still you could use if interested. I ran a similar pump on my last skimmer for several years with no issues.

  4. @Willapa I am in a similar scenario to you.

Fortunately I am able to work from home as well. My wife works night shift in the ICU as a nurse...which is pretty much the last place you want to be these days. We use to have my parents help out and occasionally hers as well to watch my son, who is 4 now, but we aren’t doing that now. So she does 3x 12s and when it lands on weekdays, I have to keep the little guy entertained in my office while I work and she sleeps. Fortunately everyone is understanding of this so I usually don’t take phone calls those days and get in what work I can. It’s rough with childcare now but hang in there! It’s been hard on my son as he is missing preschool. We just keep telling him it’s “spring break” and everything is closed!

it has been nice doing more around the house, staying out of Portland traffic, and tinkering with my tank. This last week was fun as I finally got my Trident and DOS going! Every piece of gear I add to the apex, I’m more impressed! It’s been a lot of fun lately, which is a major change from my control systems of the past!

so if everyone could do our family a HUGE favor and STAY HOME, hopefully things can get under control, my wife’s stress level can come down 👩‍⚕️, and we can all go about our reefing lives 😁🐠🐡

  5. Super awesome Jeremy, that’s amazing stability!

i just set up my trident for the first time last night. Kind of kicking myself, hope I can get more reagent soon as i only have the 2 month kit it comes with 😑

@SuncrestReef and @TheClark how close are the reagent kits coming to meeting the specified monthly testing amounts at 4 per day option?

  6. You would be just fine with a 100 gal tank and the vertex 180 skimmer. It is rated at 100 gal heavy demand. You would have to be fully stocked to be there. I think all your equipment would be just fine for another 48” tank. 90 gal are usually easy to come by and affordable. I personally always tell people that’s my favorite “beginner” size tank as they tend to have great stability and decent size overall for you to get going with some corals and medium sized fish.

its all about what you want to do, you can scale things up over time as your tank grows out.

Welcome to the site and good luck! You have any pics of your current setups to share?

  7. Just out of curiosity, is there any reason a stand alone AC unit won’t work? Like a window or freestanding unit? I always ask people that, if you are going to chill your tank, why not get some of the AC benefits for yourself at the same time? Units are selling cheap now since it’s winter.

Need to talk to Jeff about these, doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with parameters.

Running with sand (special grade) this time. Some rock will carry over from my cube plus some that I’ve had soaking in the garage.

My cube only has 2 clowns that I’ve had for 10+ years. Looking forward to having some bigger fish again!

Here was the tank when I brought it home (sadly in Nov 2018!). It sat in my garage as I planned and waiting to buy equipment for MONTHS.

Slowly gathered some things over the months...

In March 2019 I moved my 45 cube from its spot in our family room...

The stand that came with the tank needed repair in a spot or two as well as paint. I wanted to match paint it to our house trim/cabinets. Tons of sanding/prep went into it for a month or so on and off.

First spray by my brother in law ran really bad. I sanded it all off and did it myself with a rental from Home Depot. Came out overall pretty good and smooth as I was hoping. This was all done August 2019. Garage was full paint booth status for about a month 😂

Fast forward...now it’s October 2019. Finally bite the bullet and pick up an Apex! I have traditionally done Reefkeeper and even had a running Archon, but the company out of business has made it more of an underground following of keeping things going. Apex was the logical choice for the long run.

Now I get around to painting the back of the tank black

FINALLY in November 2019 I have movers bring the tank up from the garage into the house. It’s about 4 months later than I originally planned...

Now it’s time to fix my water station!

Here it was before, lots of 5 gal jugs and a 55 gal barrel stuffed in there.

Plumbed things together and did some final clean up and organization. Before this all I ran a conduit from this up to my tank so my Apex Aquabus and top off water goes through and up to the tank (my house has the garage below the main floor).
