if your going to have a tank with kelp use T5 but if not bag the lights! just turn em on when you are looking at the tank. so PC or T5 would work great....

two things, one is death as they tend to turn inside out or it could just as you said be expelling waste, just watch iy closely and if it starts to fall apart or stink after you touch it take it out asap because it can pollute your tank!

ps. they rarely flash when there settled into a tank, its a response to being spooked. they stay an electric blue most of the time...
