  1. Very nice! What are the submissions guidelines?
  2. Sorry about having to take down the tanks, but cool on the move. Check the regs on collecting in Hawaii, you might be able to get some stuff on your own. Wetwebmedia has a section on collecting IIRC, plus Bob used to be a collector himself. Good luck with the move! I know LR is a big no-no, but things like O. scyallarus mantises are okay ( they're not a native species ).
  3. 1: I have some rather unattractive zoanthids that came in as hitchhikers on several corals I've bought. I'd like to get rid of them. They're sort of a poo brown color. Not a lot of them either. One colony is growing on the underside rim of my brain coral and the other on the top of my clove polyp colony. I could be talked into chipping them off if someone local desperately wants them, otherwise I'd be happy to take any zoa eating nudis and let nature take its course. 2: Bristle worms: I don't have any in my tank, and I don't regard them as pests but as cleaners. Anyone local have some I could get? 3: Mini brittles and asterinia (sp) starfish - anyone have any spare?
  4. Times: I prefer Wed or TH really, weekends are kind of full for me, later afternoons or early evenings Weekend: early afternoons 9/11 I'm going to try and get to the Celiac Picnic, being able to eat at a BBQ and not worry about the food? Heaven! Really picky about what's going in my tank, I'm happy to learn more about fragging but not planning on taking something home, unless it's a Candy Cane, clove polyp, or a Duncan.
  5. I have a dual 24" CF unit, one of the Coralife ones. 2 x 65w It has 3 legs ( came that way used ) but I think I have a spare leg around somewhere. Personally, I don't like the legs at all. I picked up back mounting system that lets you tilt the lights, and I live that a lot more. Much more stable. I could bring it buy for you to take a look at when I pick up the chaeto.
  6. Use a 1/3rd of an inch diameter hose going into a bucket. Using a scrapper, scrap up towards the top of the tank slowly while siphoning off water. Hold the hose at the top of the scrapper so it's pulling the coralline in. Have a sock on the other end of the hose. Sound like a plan? Get a water change and scrapping at the same time. I need coralline too As for kalk, pickling lime, which should be available at Walmart this time of year, is available as well. I've been considering using a modified Calfo method for dosing kalk in my tank: he uses a shot glass, dissolves a small amount into it some tank water, and dumps it directly in. I was thinking of using vinegar ( like 1 ml ) with a small amount, dissolving the kalk, and doing a daily dose. I want to add sugar to up my bacteria count anyway, and this sounds like it would kill 2 birds with one stone.
  7. You know, I heard a rumor that O. scyallarus mantis ( peacocks ) are an invasive species in Hawaii... maybe you could do the state a favor and accidently send some our way... $20 for a 20L... hmm... perfect size tank for an O. havenensis... hmmm.... or a O. scyallarus... hmmm...
  8. This is from a different hobby, but when I lived in Denver I used to hang out fairly frequently at a hobbyist game store called Attactix. They sold table top RPGS, collectible card games, miniatures, etc. The owner and I were talking and he said that he used to be really into games, especially historical miniatures. After a few years of running the store, he sold all his minis because he was sick of dealing with them all day at work. The job just sucked the fun out of his hobby. That said, I'd definately take the route of getting a part time job and getting a feel for it. If someone's selling a business, there's a reason, and find that reason out. Would you sell a successful business, at a reduced price to boot?
  9. Well, the 64w PC LOA security light I was using on my refugium/sump kicked. I heard a loud *POP* Sunday night, I thought it was my cat Kachiko letting the feline visitor to our front door know that she'd cut him a new one if he got any closer. It was about the same as the noise she makes smacking the screen door. I've been using a 13w PC, the "standard" one that you often seen on HOB refugiums. I found this on ebay though: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=220263094149&Category=42225 a 225 bulbs LED unit. I'll get one next week ( when my self imposed fish fund allowance refreshes ), and let you all know how it turns out. If it doesn't work, I'm sure I can turn around and sell it here in Eugene to an "indoor tomatoe grower" PDQ, especially if I add that it won't show up on IR scanning.
  10. Break a leg! I hope you can take your tanks with you.
  11. Hamachi: ( Sure, Andy's done it, but mine tastes better. And ZOMG! That's a lot of sashimi. I don't think even Saburo's gives you that much. ) More seriously? I don't really have a favorite, I like a lot of them for different reasons. Besides, my favorite isn't a fish... ( see my icon )
  12. Holy Crap! Something really cool ( no pun intended ) and it's here in town. I took the libery of writing them to see if they do tours. That would be an awesome club event. ( And revenge for us down here in the valley on you Portlanders for having all those cool stores. (devil) )

    Couple new acans

I love acans, and LPS in general, but the prices on acans... yeesh.
  14. Deeper's not a bad thing IMO, but what are you planning on keeping in the tank?
  15. I'd just let the coral alone, and skip the dremmeling. If it's growing back, it's recieving enough light. No sense in stressing it anymore than you have to. As for toughness... in The Book of Coral Propogation, vol. 1 by Anthony Calfo he talks about a fungia that died. He left the skeleton in the tank as rubble, and 6 months later it started producing daughter colonies. The "dead" coral wasn't so dead after all. As I've said elsewhere, these are some pretty tough animals.
  16. You should try the Chesapeake Bay at low tide... it's eye-bleedingly bad. Nice pics! I like the tide pools at Strawberry Hill, plus, they're free to get into. I had to go to the coast for work yesterday, Florence then Newport. Figured that it would be socked in the entire drive. :(
  17. Since I'm setting up a mantis tank, if anyone finds any crab hitchhikers they'd like to give a new ( and hopefully short lived ) home, I'd be happy to take them off your hand.
  18. And the whole thing, with lights off, except for the moonlight LED.
  19. And the whole thing, lights off except for the LED moonlight.
  20. My botched attempt to make a diagram of my tank: The refugium light on the back had some sort of malfunction. :/ I'm using a 13w PC unit for now.
  21. The 2 varieties of candy cane I have:
  22. Since Chief has up and running again, we can blame him for making it possible for me to post crappy pics!
  23. Since Chief got us up and running, I can post my crappy pics. Clove polyps:
  24. 13th is a Maybe. My weekends are usually pretty full, but not well planned in advance.
