  1. I am not burning with jealousy, no I am not. I am also not a very good liar.
  2. And yes, there will be pics. From my crappy cellphone camera.
  3. 10g display with a 10g as a sump right behind it. About 10 or 15 lbs of live rock lit with a Coralife Quad96 Rio Nano Skimmer Chaeto and caluerpa in the refugium, and lots of rubble ( Thanks to Tidalsculpin ) In the display, I have a green candy cane, burgandy with stripes candy cane, those tall green clove polyps ( which look great! ), small blue cloves, and I'm picking up my little brain coral at Liquid Sunshine tomorrow. It's GREAT to have a tank again, after 2 years tankless.
  4. I guess if you can get it, then get it. Yep, the free market at work. Just because I see crazy high price, doesn't mean I have to buy it there. I'll happily support an LFS ( or in some cases, such as some trips to Portland a few years ago, some not so LFSs ) if I think the price is reasonable, or even slightly unreasonable. If it's crazy, I'll just vote with my feet.
  5. Over by the Rose Garden, roughly 1st and Jackson.
  6. I've done xenia fragging before, sowing colonies onto rubble. As for leaving coral out, don't underestimate how tough they are.
  7. I haven't seen any sponsor bashing, just some "What are thinking?" and head shaking. I have seen something much more like sponsor bashing in the vendor experience thread. As for crazy prices... I saw a store selling aiptasia covered "anenome rock" for $20 a pound. Mind you, this was about 7 years ago. Not sure they're still selling marine stuff, but I was boggled when I saw it. When I told the clerk that the anenomes are pests, she just shrugged and went back to reading the latest issue of People.
  8. $100 for a 3" x 3" colony of "Rare Green Star Polyps". Rare huh? Of course, they're also selling a G. viridis mantis shrimp for $30 - it works out to about $1 a millimeter for the mantis ( and no, I am not kidding ). I've gotten these as freebies from stores before, they're hitchhikers.
  9. Nuts, we headed home to Eugene this afternoon, we were staying with a friend in Wilsonville.
  10. Corals are like any other animal in an aquarium, you need to make sure you have enough filtration and space for them. Remember, these are pretty aggresive animals. They attack each other with chemicals, stinging cells, and go so far as to evert their guts and digest each other (that's what sweepers are ).
  11. Fern Ridge Resevoir has a number of good sized picnic areas
  12. I'm in the same boat, need to get my refugium up and running before I start adding stuff to the tank.
  13. I'm looking for the verticle mount parts, the shell that goes on the bottom and current director. I "put them away" somewhere, and I think the contents of that box got recycled. I need 2 sets of them. Does anyone have any spare?
  14. Hey all, I'm planning out my 10g nano mantis tank. I was thinking of getting one of the deeper water species of mantis, and having a tank with LPS in it as well. I like the Duncan's, candy canes, and others. I'm not sure about lighting though. I have a 96w quad unit, one of the 10,000K/Actinic PC hoods. I've never been thrilled with the look of them though, they've always seemed kind of washed out to me. There's a 2 bulb T5 unit that's 18" long, but only with 10,00K and actinic bulbs in that size. The other T5 unit I saw offered was 6 20" bulbs, which seems like overkill to me. MH would be overkill IMO too. I was considering getting some Icecap or another brand of T5 reflectors and trimming them down to fit in a hood, and using T8 bulbs. There's a much wider variety of colors available, and they're fairly cheap. I have a wooden hood I could pull the old unit ( 2 36w(?) PCs ) and put these in. Any thoughts?
  15. Totally OT... It took me a few moments to register that "[language filter]" in this case meant "Want to Find", not what I usually see [language filter] meaning... "What's [language filter] about Oceanic Cube's?... OH! Now I get it!" Bio needs more coffee...DOH!
  16. Will you be around Monday afternoon? I have the day off and we're headed to the PDX area Sunday, returning home to Eugene on Monday.
  17. re Durso style: I loved mine, and it was pretty easy to make re snails: My hate for the one that got into my overflow knew no bounds. It was hours of mucking about underneath the tank to find the thing in the tube. Let's just say my solution involved a pair of plyers and some very happy omnivores in my refugium. Lesson learned: Snail guards are like the speed of light: not just a good idea, it's the law.
  18. I might know someone who owns a video of a BBC program that was unavailable in the US for a long time, the episodes on this particular tape might be about cuttlefish and mantis shrimp... I bet this person could be talked into bringing it to a meeting if someone would like to play it...
  19. I'm not sure at what size Crocea's switch to mostly zothanelae ( spell failure on that one ) from filter feeding, but I think it's around 2". You might want to give the little guy some green water in a bowl till he gets a little bigger. Hopefully someone with more experience/knowledge will chime in on this.
  20. Off the top of my head, I'd say get some polyfilter and run it in either in your sump or a in HOB with good flow. If you've got something in there that's causing problems, it should pull it out. Is your skimmer going crazy? Maybe do a massive water change, say 75%. HTH
  21. Well, I'm going for a Caribbean tank, so not a lot of coral options, this is more of a FOWLR ( or Fish With Some Coral Live Rock ) tank. Mostly I want the "shelf" space so there's room in the sandbed for the jawfish and pistol/goby pairs. I was thinking the overhand would be good for a Royal Gramma or a Blackcap basslet to hand around upside down under. Some chalk bass for dither fish, and away I go.
  22. I thought I'd check in with the PNWMAS hivemind about this, as many of you are much more accomplished at DIY stuff than I am. The tank itself will be a 29g. I was over on "that other site" and saw this: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1375191 Using pond foam covered in sand ( the issue of pond foam deterioating under MH lighting is discussed in the thread, which is why the pond foam is covered in resin and sand ) as a back wall. I would like to do an overflow, closed loop, and here's the fun part: a PCV or acrylic frame on the back to suspend the rock from. The look I'm going for is rocks jutting out of a reef wall, with space under them. I'd like have a pair of jawfish and a pair of shrimp & gobies down in the sandbed. My drawing skills suck, which is why there isn't a graphic with this. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this type of foam work, and any ideas on doing the foam rock wall on the back. Questions I had include: Drill the overflow, returns, and CL first and foam around them, or do the foam/sand/rock and drill through? With the frame for the rock, if I use PVC, cap the ends and run a footer around the front of the tank? Have tubes coming up out of the footer so the return comes through there, making sure the bottom of the tank has flow. I was considering one of the new Vortech nano's for wavemaking. Depending on room, I'd use either another 29g or a 20g standard as a sump/refugium. The skimmer would go down there.
