    Tank flow ?

I have a thirty gallon hex and I'm trying to advert a overflow problem with it if the power goes out(when).I have never been able to get it to flow good from the tank to the sump from the begining. I have a ball valve about a foot down and if I close it briefly and open it it starts a really good siphon. It flows at 300 gph with the siphon but if I turn the pump way down (about 50%) and just let the natural flow go with no artificial siphon it is flowing at 120 gph. Not sure if that is enough turn over for the tank.I have 1 1/8 flex tube running about 4 feet down and over slightly to the sump. There is a 90% bulkhead fitting on the tank. Any ideas ?
  2. As a new member to the club,(this month) I have not gone to a meeting yet. However I think that the discusion that is going on right here is one of the reasons that I joined. I think it is great that members & prospective-members can have a discusion , to help in all the aspects of the club. A lot of clubs would just blow something like this off. I commend all those who care enough to try and fix any problems to make the club a better organization.
  3. Anyone who wants a choc.chip star can have it . I was going to take it to a lfs, but if any one here would like it they are welcome. I'm in Oregon City. Jon
  4. Boy do I feel like a idiot . Right there next to Choc. Chip star "NOT REEF COMPATIBLE". Rack that one to inexperiance.
  5. Has anyone ever noticed a choc.chip star munching on polyps .I have twice now found mine taking a taste , Today I had to put him in time-out, and tommorrow maybe he will have to find a new home . He gets fed regularly and has been no trouble, for six months up till about 2 weeks ago.he killed a small group of polyps 8-10 & took a chunk out of my star polyps.
  6. They lool just like your pics, most having a darker head or tail.I agree that they might be somthing else .Logic says so. I might suck a few up and take them to a expert. Thanks for the suggestions Jon
  7. Well, I broke out the magnifing glass . I checked out the Drs Foster & Smith site(identification) and It looks like I have redbugs for sure.Since I have no Acropora corals will they eventualy die? I have 1 galaxia, 1 leather softy, a few mushrooms. Since I have never had sps, they had to have come in on either the galaxia or a frogspawn the only additions in the last 6 weeks. Any suggestions. I would just as soon let them starve if there is little chance of further damage.
  8. I don't think I have a problem with them ( maybe i'm a slightly retarded) . I noticed red bugs , a couple of days ago on the glass down by the substrait. Not in big numbers but 20-30. I had a frogspawn die last week that seemed healthy and happy for the last few months.I don't know if this had anything to do with it or not.The only other hard coral i have is a galaxia, I was under the impression that red bugs didnt like LPS & softies. The only other corals in there are few leather softies. The reason I don't think it's a problem, is I have searched and can only find them on the glass not anything else.Do I need to panic or could it be somthing else. If it is red bugs will they die off because of a lack of food (I would reason if there was somthing to eat they would be on it) If anyone has some leftover flea equipment I could use IE. ferris wheel, trampoline, I would like to start training these guys.(nutty)
  9. I tested the r/o water and no nitrates so that looks good .I guess maybe its hidding in the substrate. How much is ok.(substrate)
  10. ammonia & nitrites are at zero. filter cleaned 2 times a week. I put the plenum in on the advice of Woody at Seahorse. The filter really does not get that dirty because i am feeding so little. So what is the suggestions on substrait , none or some or lots?I get all my water at woodys , fresh and salt so all i know is that its r/o. I want to thank everybody for there time and suggestions I really appreciate it.
  11. Running a TOP FATHOM 120 protien skimmer, med. grade sand coral w/ a plenum. The only filtration is live rock, sock filter and protien skimmer.Wardley master kit & instant ocean test kit.
  12. I've tried two different test kits , same result . My sand bed is about 3 inches.Always use ro water and no bad algae growth.
  13. This is my first reef tank, so not sure were to go from here.My nitrate levels are running between 10.0 & 20.0 ppm . How do I get those levels down . First I did talked to a couple of people that said it's not realistic to see the levels at 0.0, on the other hand most books and shops say for reef you must have it at zero.Tank is 30 g hex W/ 20g sump,vho's,85 pounds live rock ,live sand.Been running for 6 months . A few soft corals and two small clowns Plus the cleanup crew.I clean my filter sock a couple times a week and do reg water changes 50% every three weeks . Still no help, I've even done Multiple changes the same day changing 75 % water It does bring it down a bit but never lower than 10.0ppm I have seachems de-nitrate in the sump , no help over 5 weeks. I have even tried feeding almost nothing for 2 weeks to try and help. AM I CRAZY. The corals are not dying, they seem healthy but I would'nt say they were taking off either. DOH! Set me strait were am I going wrong.DOH! Jon
  14. Maybe I was misinformed but I thought angels didn't do well in copper . Am I wrong. If so what level do you guys use, just what they say on the instructions or ?
  15. Just thought I might throw this out, as I’m curious. . Besides putting angels in a QT and watching them, Any tricks or medications( dips ) to use on them to reduce ick and other parasites, infections ,ect. Just want some feed back from all the knowledgeable hobbyist here to help with the angels and the tanks they go to

  17. These were hitch-hikers on some rock I bought about a month ago. I am wondering what they are and if they are good or bad. I think they some sort of anenomaes. They are up to a dime size. They have split and spread some so I want to make sure they are ok. Thanks!
