  1. If you need Interceptors to treat red bugs, I have some.  However, the treatment will kill off your shrimps, pods, and crabs.  If the initial dose doesn't kill off the shrimps, they don't make it after the next molt.  When I had red bugs, I notice very little SPS growth.  If you're still getting good color and good SPS growth, then maybe it's not worth killing off most of the pods with Interceptor.

If your heaters are never on then how are you heating your tank?   I find it really hard to believe that a heater from a pump is heating 450 gallons of water 9 degrees...  That just doesn't make sense from a laws of physics sense.

When I had a tank... I had a total water volume of about 400 gallons.  I keep my tank at 78.5.  The sump was in the basement and I had two refugiums and a frag tank.  I had 1,100 watts of heaters and they cycled on and off throughout the night.  Almost like clockwork really but I keep my house pretty cool.  Our thermostat is set to 65 or something in the winter until 11:00 then it drops to 60 until 4pm the next day.

Suncrest.. can you overlay your heater on/off your temp graph?

Daniel, do you have a temp graph?

I'm heating my tank by my love.  haha

I did type "return pumps" and not "a pump"...  I have 4 return pumps (2 jebao 12000, 1 jebao 8000, and 1 jebao 4000) that get water back to 4 tanks and to the ATS.  I also have 6 wave pumps spread out over 4 tanks.  I think my ATS lights heat up the water a bit as well since the lights press against the ATS box, and the ATS is a closed acrylic box to help keep it quiet.  My controller only turns the heater on if temp drops below 75.8F and heater is off when temp is above 76.2F.  Yesterday we got some sun and my house temp went up to 73F during the day, and tank temp was 78.2F when I looked.

I don't have a graph at the moment.  I'm re-coding my controller and porting it to the new microcontroller and new wifi module.  I'll probably have the SQL logging ported over later tonight and should start logging data to my server.

  3. I've been reading a lot of discussion about MH vs LED power saving and additional power saving from heat or lack there of.  I'm curious to what temp do you all keep your fish room and temp for the tank itself?  All my tanks are plumbed together and I have about 450gal of total water volume.  Now that it's colder, I set my house heater temp at 69F at night and my tank heaters haven't kicked in yet.  I set my tank heaters to turn on if tank temp drops below 76F.  My tanks are glass with all open top and sump is acrylic.    I can't image needing to turn on the tank heater ever in the summer time.  Maybe my return pumps are heating up my tanks. :)

When I use to set my tank temperature to steady 79F, my tank heaters will turn on a lot.  Then if we have a warmer day, my cooling fans will kick in at 79.5F.  I found it a waste of energy heating up my tanks at night and just to cool it during the day.  Whenever I get some corals and fishes online, sometimes they came in at 68F and as cold as 65F before.  They all seems to make it ok with short term colder temp.  After visiting Hawaii and I noticed how there's could be big temp difference from wave to wave when snorkeling, I decided to let my tank temp swing from 76F to 79.5F.  Now my tank heaters hardly need to turn on.

Anyone have long term experience of running tanks at cooler temp during the winter months?

  4. @danlu_gt, I'm curious what spectrum you use for photography.  Can you share a screenshot of your light settings?
Also, any update on implementing a way to switch the lights to pre-defined settings without needing to adjust each slider?  That would make it way more convenient to change the spectrum quickly for photo sessions.
I was holding off on updating the firmware cause I wanted to wait for the Seattle guy to redesign the web interface. Unfortunately, it's taking longer than I expected. I might need to revisit the arrangement with him. I'll make the changes in next couple days.

I took these pictures in Morning mode in Canon's RAW mode. Then I use my previous custom white balance settings when shoot LPS tank.

  5. Just sharing some of my favorites. Advancement in reef lighting has came a long ways with the abilities to fine tune both spectrum and intensity. I highly doubt I can achieve this kind of coloration without controlling how much 470nm vs 450nm vs 435nm, 420nm, and 400nm.

I found the yellow in the rainbow trachy peaks at 470nm but turn more green with 450nm and below. Some yellow/gold hammers are pretty consistent from 470-400nm but some different fluorescent color with 470nm vs 450nm.93f947dc9c37ebab26170f4201b6bb22.jpgc63ce2c99d40a6b42c62243b05b784fb.jpga284704d73a4d253c17bc783cb66be1c.jpgd6d23a2a7f7e87d957d2227436ee4271.jpg99e2d488c128a26f50a9bfa5e4c0d4b7.jpg36cd53974b05d8978f69e5a39761c180.jpg8ef2a06021f0aeec556c234c9714bb84.jpg

  6. Daniel, that is a cheap ozone generator! Do you have it plumbed into your skimmer intake? I am going to run ozone on my new tank.

Yes, I just put a silicon air tubing to my skimmer air intake.

  7. Just run some ozone into your skimmer air intake for water clarity.  Simple and no bulb changes.  I your goal is to clear the water and not raise the redox to certain level, just run ozone for like 5-10min every 4hrs or so.

I can't remember who was asking me about which ozone generator I use... I got my from ebay, but same as this one on amazon.  You can set to run one time, every hour, or every 4 hours from 2-30min.  It's a pretty strong ozone generator so run it in every 4 hours modes.

  8. I'm also interested in getting some, maybe 50+.  Also, anyone know where to get those giant trochus?  I got 4 when they were 1.5" from CnC and now they're about size of a baseball.  I would love to get more of those.

  9. Yeah, on my iphone, even in chrome it shows nothing. On my PC it shows up just fine. Weird.
It didn't show up for me on my iPhone, on Tapatalk, or on my MacBook running Safari.  But then when I tried Chrome it worked.  Weird.
iOS forces chrome to use their html API so iOS chrome is not the same as Android or window's chrome. From my ReeFi html development, I've learned that iOS web API do not fully support html5. I don't know if this issue is related to html5 support or not.

  10. I completely understand and agree with Brian...  So apparently China wouldn't pay for the additional 25% tariffs when I passed my US custom's bill to them contrary to the mastermind that came up with this.  Results is I have to absorb most of the additional tariffs and pass some to my customers.  Starting a start-up is already hard enough, this is a slap in the face for all the hard work I put into development and production.

  11. When my wife gave birth couple years ago, she wanted traditional Taiwanese "recovering" meals. They ship frozen food in there thermal insulation bags. Even with some FedEx delayed for a day, food stayed frozen.

They are clean. Free if you can use them.

I also have lots of gel ice packs of different sizes, free as well.85ddfa8685e0fcedea1fe72335a8c885.jpgc5b3b77fa24875815caf46b3bf83954f.jpgc08319d1c5099f81bf0fdba5a0cf66a9.jpg

  12. My wife figured out my scheme when I started to put ReeFi Duo Extremes on all my tanks... "...so that's why you wanted to start making reef LEDs."

She said I need to stop "reinvesting" in corals from the ReeFi sells. I told her that her shares will be the corals when I frag them. [emoji1787]
