1. I'm not arguing that we shouldn't reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. I'm arguing that we should look at the risks objectively. We as a society have a finite number of resources. The question is which issues do we spend them on. My guess is that many more people will die from things which we know are happening than due to the couple degree rise in temperature that might happen due to global warming. The money spent on global warming will not be spent on, HIV/AIDS, malaria in north Africa, heart disease, cancer, malnutrition, monsoon/typhoon flooding in south east Asia, etc. We need a logical open discussion on the issues, not doomsday histeria.
2. It's not a big secret. Just look for the big green sign that says North Albany High School and middle school.
3. The problem with the train metaphor is that in the case that we are presently discussing the train might actually not exists. If that is the case we may be laying on the sidewalk, and when we get up and move we may be stepping into the middle of a road and get run over by a car.
4. What time is the Rock Party today? The invite says 12:00 and the calendar says 2:00.
5. Here's a reference to one that took me a whole two minutes to fined: Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics Volume 95, Issue 1-2, January 2007, Pages 115-121 Multi-scale analysis of global temperature changes and trend of a drop in temperature in the next 20 years Zhen-Shan, L.Show author details, Xian, S.Show author details Correspondence address The School of Geographic Sciences, Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing, China Abstract A novel multi-timescale analysis method, Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD), is used to diagnose the variation of the annual mean temperature data of the global, Northern Hemisphere (NH) and China from 1881 to 2002. The results show that: (1) Temperature can be completely decomposed into four timescales quasi-periodic oscillations including an ENSO-like mode, a 6-8-year signal, a 20-year signal and a 60-year signal, as well as a trend. With each contributing ration of the quasi-periodicity discussed, the trend and the 60-year timescale oscillation of temperature variation are the most prominent. (2) It has been noticed that whether on century-scale or 60-year scales, the global temperature tends to descend in the coming 20 years. (3) On quasi 60-year timescale, temperature abrupt changes in China precede those in the global and NH, which provides a denotation for global climate changes. Signs also show a drop in temperature in China on century scale in the next 20 years. (4) The dominant contribution of CO2 concentration to global temperature variation is the trend. However, its influence weight on global temperature variation accounts for no more than 40.19%, smaller than those of the natural climate changes on the rest four timescales. Despite the increasing trend in atmospheric CO2 concentration, the patterns of 20-year and 60-year oscillation of global temperature are all in falling. Therefore, if CO2 concentration remains constant at present, the CO2 greenhouse effect will be deficient in counterchecking the natural cooling of global climate in the following 20 years. Even though the CO2 greenhouse effect on global climate change is unsuspicious, it could have been excessively exaggerated. It is high time to re-consider the trend of global climate changes.
6. We bought a D80 last fall after a 20 year affair with an Olympus OM-1. It's a great camera. We bought it with the 18-55mm kit lens and then bought a 75-300 used tele-zoom. It does everything I want when I don't have time for my real camera.
7. We fought with them on and off for the past year using Joes Juice and Kalk. A power outage and the tank temperature dropping into the 50's finally got rid for them.
8. All: Thanks for your help with DIY rock recipes and comments. We have finished making about 125lbs of rock. Here are a couple pictures. We ended up deciding on the following recipe: 1 part type I/II cement : 3parts crushed oyster shell : ~1.5 parts H2O. This seemed to give a relatively porous yet strong rock. One thing that we found that made the rock more natural looking was to completely cover it in a mixture of crushed oyster shells and argonite sand after the rock structure was formed. This way the rocks were coated and it did not look like grey cement. Our rock has been curing for about 3 weeks now. Doing water changes twice a week. The PH started out above 12 and has now dropped into the 9's.
9. I ran two for about six months. They worked fine until the internal gears started skipping and quit rotating.
10. Just remember if you get a generator, to keep up on your routine maintenance and have a few spare parts around. Our neighbor had a generator this weekend but it was of little used due to a clogged fuel filter.
11. Well, the power came back on here a couple of hours ago. The tank looks like skimmer effluent. The good news is I wanted to finish our 180 anyway. Guess i have good reason to get finished now. Will have to figure our how to wire in a generator.
12. I found this study done by the Australian Institute of Marine Science among others. It seems to suggest that an increase of the ocean temperature by 1.5 C will have significant impact in coral reefs. The real impact is due to the peak summer temperatures. One thing that I didn't expect was the differences between this reports bleaching threshold and those shown on the noaa graphs. Seems like there is still alot to be learned http://www.nrw.qld.gov.au/science/pdf/barrier_reef_report_1.pdf
13. I've seen a lot of people claim that T5's are more efficient than halides but I haven't seen any good comparisons. Does anyone know of where I can find par/Watt measurements for T5 bulbs??
14. While it is true that we can't please everyone, we can and should listen to their comments and suggestions and use them to improve our club. We've talked about name cards in the past, but it has never been completely implemented. Maybe the club could provide a name card when we renew our membership, or maybe our membership cards could also be name cards. I also felt bad for Andy having to talk over pumps etc. One thought that comes to mind is we could have every other meeting in a meeting room. There must be a school, church, restaurant, community center somewhere that would let us use a room.

These are interesting images. I wish I could get my camera bag down to 10kg. Have you seen the GigaPixel Project http://www.gigapxl.org. They are doing real gigpixel images not rendering a bunch of lower resolution images together.
16. Oooops.... I knew I was forgetting something(wife)
17. Looks like the Republicans just took a pretty good stoning for promises not kept.
18. What do you mean "The adds are over"? It only 730 days till the next presidential electron. Campaigning starts yesterday.
19. Sounds like a prelude to the upcomming Civil War game. All I know is that I plan to have smoked duck no matter who wins.
