  1. I agree the comparison between guns and cars in general is not valid, but a comparison to sports cars might be more valid. Why do we need cars with 400 hp that get 5 mpg. The only real purpose of these cars are to exceed the speed limit and accelerate at unsafe rates. Should these be outlawed?
  2. The thread for the January POTM is now open

  5. The last time I measured the RO output it was something like 3-5 ppm. Our tap water starts at about 60ppm. After the DI bed it drops to a reading of O ppm. So in my experience your 5 ppm does not sound surprising. It also depends on what is in the water to begin with.
  6. I would probably feel that way if I didn't have mine in a 100 gallon horse trough in my garage.
  7. I don't really know anything about the Aqua C or the PC, but I was wondering why you want to replace the PM Bullet. I'm running a Bullet and am quite happy with it.
  8. I measure around 62 ppm in Corvallis

  10. I have used a 5 gallon bucket with a stand pipe in the bottom connected to a float valve to dose Kalkwasser in the past. I basically dumped a pound of pickling lime in the bucket and then used another float valve to keep the bucket filled with RO/DI water. I then stirred it up with a plastic spoon every night. Seemed to work fine. I have not switched to a DIY calcium reactor which take alot less attention.
  11. Clownfish?? Did Dave have clownfish?
  12. Well, I've finally taken the time to finish this project. Here are a couple pictures of the finished product. Front view showing the opening to the dual chambers and the shower pan gasket: Front view with top plate mounted showing recirculation pump, PH probe, inlet and outlet View of the modified maxijet that I'm using as a feed pump. I pondered getting a Litermeter, but couldn't convince myself to spend the money. Closeup of the bubble counter. I'm actually using a ph-controller to control the PH in the first chamber, but it's nice to have visual confirmation that things are dong the correct thing.
  13. I just did a quick literature search on palyotoxin and found something like 300 references. I think that should be more than plenty for your report. I didn't look through and see how many are related to home aquariums though. I've attached the references that I found in a zipped html file. Bob conv_1763.zip
  14. After poking with the sticks are you still going to expect a 14 day guarantee?? To me this is just an advertising gimmick by liveaquaria. This is like the rebates that many companies us to entice us into buying things. They know that only a small percentage of customers will jump through the hoops to turn in rebate forms or dead fish. This is just another expense for a very profitable business. Our LFS are in a completely different situation. I don't see any of them getting rich. I am willing to pay a higher price or take the risk that the fish I buy might die in a week or two when I shop at a LFS. I have received hundreds of dollars worth of free advice and information from local owners. If we don't support them, they may not be their to support in the future.

  18. I've purchased acrylic from Tap Plastics in Tigard before. I've heard there are cheaper places in the Portland area. Maybe some one else will chime in. Their website is: http://www.tapplastics.com If you are considering building you own sump, you should also check out this website http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html Bob
