Mounting Rock to wall help please

Title pretty much explains it.  I am considering mounting a rock to my backwall to make a sort of shelf, somewhat like a more attractive frag rack.  Has anyone done this, and if so how do you do it with a stocked tank without draining the water?  I am curious if this is possible.  Also, I dont want it to look terribly stupid but I have seen some good looking tanks that have done this,  this one for example.

Obviously I am not going for this level of detail, although if you check out my tank thread I would like to place it in the center of the back wall.  Tips and thoughts please!  Thanks!

I have a couple of the small magnetic shelves on the below page. They work well, and look nice.

I had an entire rock wall on my 70 cube in the past, you need to cut the rocks back so it's flat, and then silicone is to the back wall. You will need to drain the tank to do so. It needs to be dry and easily accessible. If you want just a small piece for frags I'd do the suggested above and buy a magnetic one.

Do you have any pictures of this? I want to initially use as a frag rack but am limited on space so as they grow out it will be their home. I don't want it to look really poor as it will be directly in the center of my 29 gallon. I am also worried about blocking to the softies below.

What did you cut the rock with?

I did rock similar to this but more of a bridge with a rock below. I also cut a piece of rock flat with a tile saw then used the 2 part epoxy putty to attach it to the back wall, this is a big piece in a 250g tank on the end viewing side. Made a nice bridge for fish to swim under and have coral on top. I staged it in the garage then put it in the tank while it was filling, not sure how it would work under water but it was wet when I did it.

Alright thanks for the info. I moved my scape around to make room and i am going to cut a rock shelf and then dremmel holes for magnets inside it and then Mount it that way rather than having to silicone. I will post an update on it on my tank thread.

Only issue I see is the magnets will need to be big for the rock. Most of the rock shelfs out there are a lightweight product.

That Alternative Reef stuff seems nice but I do not think he makes it anymore. There is also these guys http://www.aqua-mags.com/

I would like to do the same thing and figured a tile saw or brick saw would be the best rout to go. I have a small one but only good for smaller rocks. I need to find a bigger one. Then either silicone or epoxy to the glass.

Good luck and would like to know what you end up with.

Tile saw works perfectly to cut it, it bucks around a bit lol but it does the job

Ended up getting the job done this afternoon. Posted it on tank thread here: http://www.pnwmas.org/topic/35927-my-first-reef-29g-mixed/

Thanks to everyone that pointed me in the right direction I am real happy with how it turned out.
