bamburgb
So last weekend I bought some SPS, last night before I left for work I was looking at the tank and everything seemed happy. This morning when I returned from work I looked at the tank and one of my new Millipora's is completely stripped on one side but I do now know who the culprit is. Im thinking it was one of the urchins but do not know for sure, anyone else have any ideas?

bamburgb
Haha that's awesome. Might need to get rid of an urchin though that or have some fresh uni (I make that threat to the urchin daily)

earthbound
What kind of urchin is it? Other than long spines I haven't really heard of them eating sps... That is unless I have just gotten lucky with the 10 that are in my 90g right now.
Emerald525
They don't eat them they just are like a bull in a china shop especially the long spined ones and can knock over things.
bamburgb
I have a tuxedo urchin, black long spine urchin, and then a short spined urchin
Emerald525
Long spine gets my vote but they can all do it. Tuxedos are kinda funny sometimes they can take an entire zoa colony around with them!
bamburgb
Haha ya he usually had a pulsing Xenia on his back, as long as he isn't spreading any aptasia I'll be really happy

reefnjunkie
I've got a Halloween urchin that I got to eat the red turf algae, I never knew long spine urchins to be bad, but then again never wanted one so I've never reasearched them. Kim you should know pee-cok wouldn't fly, I may be mistaken but I think it's a size reference to a phallic member for pete sakes- come on use your perverted mind-

MrBret
Is there the possibility of a bad hitch hiker crab that has been hiding in your system?? I have had some of them in the past that would shave all the polyps off of different sps, not all of them....just like half. on the stalk and up a few choice branches. Even if it wasn't a hitchhiker crab emerald crabs can go rogue. A wise reefer once told me claws and reefs do not mix.. Peaco ck , peacok, peaco ck... Mandinga
If it's your first SPS....I'd be more concerned about the old water parameter pest. Mille's can be very picky...
bamburgb
its not my first sps but never had this happen before, but it looks like the whole side was eaten, just stripped all the way up
