PowderBlue
So it's not really a complaint, but my 40 breeder grows nearly no algae, no diatoms, no hair algae, and worst part very small amounts of coraline. I dose calcium and mag. Have a gfo reactor. The only algae I get is the green little dots on the glass that I have to use the scraper to get off. Doesn't seem like coraline. The coraline I am growing is purple and slowly spreading on the rock but nothing on the glass. I do 20 gallon water changes once every two weeks. Am I doing too many changes? Nitrates, nitrites are zero. I transferred all my rock from a 29 gallon cube that was setup for about 8 months, the breeders been up for about 3. Neither had any coraline on the glass but the 29 had a small amount of hair algae when I broke it down.
Derbird
I don't know why you are not growing algea. Sounds like a good problem to have to me The green dots that you have to scrap may be coraline. I have green coraline in my tank along with purple, red, blue and white. It comes in a whole bunch of crazy colors.
pnkrcklives
My 30 gallon cube is the same way. But now to think about it it took a while(year+) before algea really started growing on my 90 gallon.
obeasethug
Overfeeding is a good way to get a bunch of algae growing in your tank...at least thats how i do it.(whistle)
PowderBlue
My 90 I had coraline on the glass in about 3-4 months. Lol @ over feeding I've made that mistake a few times! But I guess it's not a big deal, I like not having the nuisance algae so maybe I shouldn't complain
reefnjunkie
Give it some time, it took me 3 years to get any hair algae, but I found a dime size piece last month (whistle) Coraline comes in green too, not just purple/red
PowderBlue
Oh ok, so it must just be growing a ton of green and slowly growing purple. It's def a headache to get off of the front glass, doesn't grow much on the sides oddly enough? My tanks crazy I think.
beardedsmurf
It's def a headache to get off of the front glass. Use an expired credit card or old gift card. Makes short work of the coraline on the glass, but you have to get your hands wet.
PowderBlue
Thanks! I'll give that a shot when I get home!
Kimberlee
Use an expired credit card or old gift card. Makes short work of the coraline on the glass' date=' but you have to get your hands wet.[/quote'] I found a great scraper that detaches from the handle for better scraping ability. Oh and I have a 40B and only do a 5gal WC once a week unless there is an issue that requires I do a bigger 1, so I'm guessing here, but I think the lack of nuisance algae has something to do w/ the 20gal WC you're doing bi-weekly. I think I may follow your lead here and up my WC.
PowderBlue
My wife thinks I'm nuts to do such frequent large changes, but I'd rather be safe than sorry, with my 90 I fought algae and diatoms for months and it was such a headache! My 40 has been so much nicer to me haha what scraper are you using??
Kimberlee
I'll look it up for you...there's no brand name on it.
Kimberlee
Not the exact one, but as close as I could get http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=12756&cmpid=03csegpl&ref=6111&subref=AA&CAWELAID=525413208&cagpspn=pla

reefnjunkie
Kent makes a glass scraper but be careful I have scratched my glass with them. I think Garrett in Salem is or will be stocking custom made scrapers that fit in the Kent handle, I use them for my acrylic and when I had glass, they cut through coraline like a hot knife through butter
PowderBlue
I have the kent but it seems like its going to scratch my glass with how much pressure it takes. But I could also be a bit paranoid lol

PowderBlue
I have the SOS pad like material it works but I really have to get at it for it to come off. Kind of a headache lol
Mandinga
Get the magic eraser from scotch(non scented), or the doby pad from target. Either one will make quick work of those green dots.a credit card will work, but will eventually leave scratches. And on the coralline, patience grasshopper.
