siskiou
Ideally, I'd love to get an eheim, but if it's quiet and can run external on a calcium reactor, I'm interested. The little Iwaki that came with the reactor is very noisy. Could be that there is air trapped in it, but I sure don't know how to get it out. Tilting it helps a little, but not enough for me to want it running in the living room.
chewie
Eheim 1250, or Mag 3 will work nicely on that reactor. Sounds like the bearings are shot on the iwaki.
siskiou
So you think an Eheim 1048 would be too small? A lot of calcium reactors seem to use that model.
chewie
The iwaki MD10 is pressure rated @ 180gph. to get that kind of flow through the reactor with a non pressure rated pump, you need to double the gph rating. the eheim 1048 is 160gph. it will work, just not as designed. siskiou
Ah, that makes sense! I wish I knew if the Iwaki is cavitating (what would I do to stop that, if it's the case) or actually damaged. It sounds exactly like my return pump before the air is all purged, but never stops being noisy, even after running for a couple of minutes. chewie
Have you taken it apart yet?
siskiou
I've checked the impeller and that's fine. The other screws are stripped, so I can't get them off. Looks like some parts I can see through the air holes a rusted, others look fine.
chewie
Have you ran the pump with the reactor totally full of water, and with all tubes plugged?
siskiou
I have, but I'm trying it again, just in case.
