Nyles
OK guys, I went to the tide pools this weekend and had a blast, I wish someone would have shared this with us earlier, I have been a mile from this place to visit the botanical gardens a few times and never knew this existed. Follow the signs to Sunset Bay from Charleston! http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&om=1&z=17&ll=43.303195,-124.397635&spn=0.005091,0.007757&t=h This is in cape arago state park (near Charlestone and thats near bandon). It is a protected park so no taking stuff home. (nono) Here is the tide pool schedule (click on oregon then Charleston) http://www.tidesonline.nos.noaa.gov/geographic.html Make sure you make it for low tide or your hosed! Pull into Arago state park go past the main Gathering building on the right, up the small hill you will see a couple signs just as you are leaving the park on the right. Park there and take the short hike down the hillside. As you enter the beach take a RIGHT and head out all the way to the end (You will see some metal boxes 6" x6" for a U of O experiment on the rocks. There is all kinds of cool stuff. and of course as posted from the tidepool site: http://www.roguerivertrips.info/activities/Southern_Oregon_Beaches.asp TIPS FOR TIDE POOL VIEWING Tide pool viewing is not for the faint of heart. But with a willingness to get wet, some common-sense safety measures and a spirit of adventure, you will be rewarded with hours of wildlife viewing pleasure. Pick up a Field Guide -- many good guides are available, but avoid the most basic guides that tend to focus on east coast species. Pacific Intertidal Life, by Ron Russo and Pam Olhausen is a great pocket guide for under five dollars. Low Tides Mean High Times -- plan your trip to coincide with the lowest possible tides, generally those that occur near the times of a full or new moon. Pick up a tide chart at a sporting goods store and look for minus tides for the best viewing opportunities. Stick to the Pools -- the best viewing occurs in the lowest exposed tide pools. Pass up the animals exposed to the air and watch the deep pools where animals will be feeding. Look, Don't Touch and Pry -- gently push aside floating seaweed to look beneath, but leave the animals alone. Quietly watch the pool for movements to discover crabs and fish that hide from view when they are disturbed. Tread Lightly -- stay out of the pools and carefully place each footstep to avoid stepping on sea life. Animals that can withstand crashing waves are easily crushed underfoot. Collect Only Memories -- leave everything where you find it. Even the smallest shell will be used by young hermit crabs. Remember most tide pool animals are protected by strictly enforced laws to conserve this unique natural resource. Hear is some pics of our visit We managed to find a Sunflower starfish! How cool is that! He was about 18" round http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/nyleswright/8-12-06192.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/nyleswright/8-12-06191.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/nyleswright/8-12-06190.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/nyleswright/8-12-06189.jpg If you know of some more cool tide pools please post them up! R-3
Yeah everyone chime in about this. I would help out but have no idea where any of these are. How about a little further north? Doesnt Depoe Bay have some? I would really like to take my daughter to some. Thanks Nyles. Later Ryan
Nyles
I took my 5, 3 and 1 year old. The older kids had a blast! I didn't take many pics due to the fact I had the youngest strapped to me! Oh I should add, we went with the local ranger, she showed us pretty much everything. Nyles
Be forwarned, there is so much sea life in the pools that you have to be extremely careful not to kill anything. But its worth the trip 100%. Mostly we seen lots of crabs, hermits, snails, stars, urchins, and 1,000's of enemones 1" to 12", mullusks, quite a bit of small fish that look like lawnmower blennies (sorry forgot their names) and Im sure Im forgetting things. I will have to take better pics next time, Im getting a new camera soon, I promise!

Nyles
We have been there it was very cool. The shore Acres garden is really awesome too. We hiked there, but we showed up a little late and the water was coming in pretty fast, didnt get to see much. We are going back before the season is over, We had a cool place a sunset bay camp ground, right on a protected stream, the racoons practically came in our tents! They stole a whole bag of chips "unopened" Ran into the protected area (not 3 feet) opened them like they knew what they where doing, and proceeded to split the spoils between them. Awesome weekend and excellent camping with perfect weather.

spayne
My Dad and I found these awesome tide pools a few months back, so we always make sure to go there when we go to the coast. I'm not sure the name of it, but Jay thinks it's south of Waldport. The beach is entirely rock. And, like all tidepools, the only good time to go is during low tide. We love it there, even though walking on those rotten round rocks to get to the solid rock with the tidepools is a KILLER!
impur
Good info!! I love checking out the tidepools. We are gonna go do this on friday! We have relatives coming to town from Oklahoma to watch UO kick OU's rear and they don't ever get to see the ocean.

Stonefield Beach. If you get there at low tide it is awesome. You can venture out pretty far on the rocks. Lots of life. Stonefield Beach It is just a parking location, not a state park. Here are some pics of the last time we were there. Jay
impur
Wow awesome Jay. Thanks for the info. I'll be checking it out for sure!
impur
So its closer to Yachats than Waldport right?
Barleychown
The beaches all along the south Yachats area are covered in tidepools. Mike and I rent a house over there several times a year just to watch the ocean and the tide pools. Also, for those with kids or who do not enjoy twisting their ankles on those lovely round rocks, the lighthouse in newport (I believe) has a tidepool interaction area where even wheelchairs can get down to the tidepools. As I recall Cape whatchmacallit between florence and yachats also has a trail down to the tidepools around that area.
SeanF
I actually can't remember the name of the one you are talking about Jay but it is actually one stop north of Stonefield. It has the river down there that you can cross over and go out on the point and around the bend on the right or on the left is a bunch of rocks with tons of tidepools. spayne
You're right, Sean! It isn't Stonefield. Google maps didn't show it. It's a great little tidepool area... but now I need to check some of these other ones out before the weather turns cold and rainy!
impur
I'm going tomorrow!!! Is it the Neptune State Park - 13 miles south of Waldport?
Chief
It's not really a park. Just a wide spot in the road with a parking lot. There is a stream that runs right next to the parking area on the beach. It should be just north of Stonefield beach. Jay
