  1. I placed 12 nudis two months ago. I still have aiptasia. More than before. Not sure why it’s not working for me

Have the aiptasia at least slowed down? That is the first thing I noticed. The big ones kept getting larger but wasn’t seeing as many new ones. It’s like they eat the little ones first, then the hidden ones, then the exposed ones. I had a lot of aiptasia but it wasn’t out of control. Do you have a pretty bad infestation? I was worried my wrasse would eat them but it’s hard to tell since I’ve only seen one nudi at a time on two occasions. You’d think they weren’t even in there. Good luck!

  2. Yeah I guess it would be a sluice box! I have not seen one before but it does make a lot of sense to me.

One thing about having huge rubbermaid fuge and sump is soooo much stuff gets trapped in the bottom of it.

My thought was the little chambers in a sluice box would hydraulically trap debris.

It is only theory at this point though.

    Thoughts?

This would be between your sump and the fuge? Knowing that you have filter socks before the sump, the detritus must be pretty fine. I wonder if it would be heavy enough to settle out in the sluice? Maybe if you put some filter mat in the bottom on it to help trap? My fuge has gotten kinda gross and thinking I should clean it out. May be why my nitrates have been higher than they used to be.

  3. Wow, that’s some heavy growth. I remember back when I started my first reef tank and was super excited to see some coralline growing, now I really dread seeing it grow!

  4. A little update here, so I added 14 or so to my 120 just over a month ago and they are like snipers in the night! For the first 2 weeks I saw nothing and the aiptasia started to multiply quick since I wasn’t routinely hitting with aiptasiaX. I was just patient and all of a sudden about 2 weeks ago, I saw a prominent one disappear and spotted a nudi every now and again with a flashlight. But now, they’ve reach the tipping point and the aiptasia are going fast. Just amazing. I can’t believe how well these have worked and by far the easiest and fun reef pest treatment I’ve done. Even some of the huge ones just vaporized over night. Until now, I had never used a flashlight on my rock at night and amazed at how many pods are scampering around. It’s quite creepy.

  5. I have 1100 watts for 400 gallon. There is a guy in Florida with around 800 gallons and he has 2,000 watts.

We are in the PNW so we spend a LOT of money on keeping tanks warm. This is why I ran halides on my DT and frag tanks on opposite schedules.

I am going to be building a huge system at my new house and will be insulating my fuge with expanding foam.

I am going to put a large long macro algae tank under my display with about 200w of ebay led grow lights. There are lots of benefits to macro algae nutrient export.

I am also planning to have some kind of "flume". Probably part of my macro tank, where I glue 1" tall " ribs" no the bottom of the spaced about 2" apart. Sediment should settle out in these areas and I can siphon it out.

    Cheers

  6. This matches my experience.  (this is probably my 4th time over many years applying Berghia.  Heck, I grew them out in the 90's, before they were commercially available.)
Add Berghia to tank.   They Vanish.   Nothing Happens.  Nothing Happens.   Few weeks later, some Aptasia start disappearing.  Few weeks after than, they're noticeably going away.   Many weeks later, Every Last One is gone.
... Except, if aptasia that are in some weird to reach locations.  (like, not on the main rocks/gravel)    In those cases, manually scrape, poison, etc.   With the confidence, Berghia will eat any sub pieces that break free.

    Thanks for the advice. I
Can be patient and sit back and watch them die!! Will they migrate into the sump? I just put them into the display but imagine some aiptasia are lurking down there.

  7. I got in on the saltyunderground sale and they arrived yesterday. I was really impressed with the packaging and health of these little guys. They were very active in the shipping container and latched to the inside of the pipette immediately and were hard to even puff out onto the rock. I bought enough to get the free shipping, so 14 of them for 77 bucks, not bad! Upon being released into the tank, they latched right onto the rock and disappeared. We'll see what happens, hope the wrasse doesn't pick them off. I had a low level aiptasia problem, but have noticed a definite uptick over the last year or so between hitting them with aiptasiax at water changes. Can't wait to see them take off!

  8. I'll flag this thread to come back to when I need some programming. But I'm sure I could pimp out my programming a bit more on existing items! For my swabbie, I just copied your homework and never looked back! Keep it coming!

  9. It looks like the changes I made to my dosing schedule yesterday are paying off:

What is your dosing schedule looking like now? How often and how much at each interval for Ca and Alk? I test at the same time every few days and feel like it's rock solid, but really have no clue as to what the daily variation is. You're making me think it's not that stable after all! But I dose alk every hour for about 15 hours during the lights off period. Surely that does something?!

  10. Lmao.. just because you bought it 4 years ago doesn't mean it is only 4 years old.

Laugh all you want but it'll always be 4 years old to me since that's when I forked out 500 for it and I'll be using this old technology until the wheels fall off!

  11. Any idea why they didn't support Apex Classic with these? Is it just a sales stunt or does the classic not have some functionality that's needed? I mean, come on, my Apex is only 4 years old!

  12. Don't use all the reagent up tonight! It's pretty compact, I thought it would be larger. So how does it clean itself after each test, does it flush with some tank water to the waste vessel? Does it have a test vial like a Hanna?

  13. Sorry, I don’t know the answer on the EB8 outlets. I have the newer EB832 which doesn’t have that issue.

That was a much needed improvement! I mistakenly plugged in a third doser to automate another liquid supplement into a standard eb8 outlet and despite Apex only set to run it 3 minutes, the doser kept running and dumped 450 ml of KZ Pohls xtra into my tank! It didn't harm anything but it was about $50 worth of supplement! I just added a splitter to the outlet and plugged in a spare air pump that gets the wattage up enough to trigger the relay in the outlet.

  14. Mine is just plugged in to a regular outlet and a cheap digital timer which doesn't have any special power draw.  Hopefully that helps.

Well sounds like if I run out of Apex outlets I can always just go this route. Those energy bars are expensive!

  15. I've been really pleased with mine.  Went from cleaning my skimmer 1x/week to 1x/month.  I still have to dump it out here and there but the Swabbie was a hobby changing piece of gear.

I was going to add a piece of soft silicon tubing to my skimmer cup drain port with a cap or valve on the end. That way I can drain it by just putting the end of the silicone tube in a bucket, open the valve, drain it, then close the valve. May get clogged over time, but no big deal.

I'm still considering just having an open drain with an airlock but worried about skimmer going crazy and overflowing the bucket. We'll see. That's where the skimmate locker is king.

  16. I have mine set to run for 2 minutes every 6 hours:
Fallback OFFOSC 000:00/002:00/358:00 Then ONIf Output EB_3_Skimmer = OFF Then OFF

    The OSC timers are:

    • 000:00 = zero minutes after midnight until the first run
    • 002:00 = two minutes of actual run time
    • 358:00 = 5 hours & 58 minutes to delay until the next run
I've found 2 minutes gives it enough time to thoroughly wipe the neck clean.  Adjust the timers to your liking.
The last line of code keeps the Swabbie off when the skimmer outlet (EB_3_Skimmer) is off.  I don't want it to accidentally start rotating when I'm in the middle of skimmer maintenance.  If your skimmer is controlled by your Apex, then substitute the name of your outlet in that code, otherwise remove it.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Cool, thanks. I'll just copy and paste that in and adjust as needed. Does it have to be plugged into one of the low wattage eb8 outlets? Mine only has 2 of these and my dosing pumps are plugged into them. If they are plugged into the standard outlets they'll keep running after the time period ends since the watt draw is so low. I can bypass this issue by adding another load to the outlet if need be.
