Man, I didn't realize this was the mother of all algaes! I know the exact zoa rock it came in on and didn't know what it was and to think I thought it looked cool! Until it started popping up everywhere. It's been in there for a long time and grows pretty slow but does require routine removal.
With my tank transfer, I guess I shouldn't be so dam aggressive about treating my corals since it sounds impossible to contain and you only need microscopic remnants.
I can't believe the new corals you bought that sat in your display tank for a day already had some hitchhikers, that's crazy!
I'll do my best to clean the bases, dip in coral Rx for a routine clean and keep my fingers crossed.
I'll definitely scope out a hungry Tang as a backup!

Good to know. I'm sure you just get a real productive one by chance too, like Kim's purple. Do lawnmower blennies live up to their name?

That is an advantage to having a bigger tank! More variety of creatures to do my work for me......
Are purple tangs known for being exceptionally good grazers? Any others tangs that you know of that are good too?

I'll be transferring my soft corals, SPS, and LPS to a new tank soon and want to limit the chances of introducing some nasties I accumulated the last 3 years my tank has been running. Namely briopsis, bubble algae, and dictyota. These seem to thrive no matter how low the nutrient levels are but haven't really gotten out of control, just a PIA. The bubble algae is easy to pluck out from time to time, I can beat the briopsis by running high magnesium, but it inevitably comes back. The dictyota is slow growing but but is really hard to remove. Lucky the new tank is larger and will allow me to pick up a tang to graze on the greenery. If I can avoid any or all of these, I'd be really stoked!
I won't be transferring the rock over, but some of the coral bases that are no longer covered by living tissue and frag plugs could have small amounts or algae spores.
Two options I see are taking a dip in coral Rx and scrubbing/scraping the bases down.
The other is more aggressive and using diluted hydrogen peroxide to either dip the whole thing or just the base.
I have some pretty large colonies I'd hate to loose in the process like a big birds nest, montiporas, torches, and some small acros. Anyone have any success stories or have used hydrogen peroxide safely?

Roy did a quick talk with some quick tips about shipping coral! He talked about how transship can really save you money! Danyell works at USPS and also had some good tips about shipping.
For boxes and Styrofoam: Uline is a good way to go!
For routine shipping Roy uses FedEx, UPS, or USPS. Shipping overnight can be expensive. You get a better deal the more you ship so possibly getting a group account may save you some money.
Here are some new members from left to right
Shawn , Mark (I hope that's your name.. I talked quite a bit with you!)
Then there's Jordan and sorry didn't catch the last guy! Maybe you can chime in here and tell me your name! [emoji4]
Lots of interest in the talk about shipping corals! The more you can ship the more you can sale and the more you can buy!
That's Jeremevans third from the right (Another new "old" member) Nice to meet you your wife and your new baby! Congrats!
Billandwende again and Rbeyer and his better half Dbyer! Thanks for the USPS tips!
And here is Roy himself aka Stylaster! He's either giving a talk and saying that he likes to use urine specimen cups for shipping zoas or he's getting a random drug test.
(Disclaimer.. Roy is NOT, I repeat NOT giving a random drug test for all you literal people.. I'm 100% joking! )
The mysterious guy with the hat and the end of the lineup is me! Trevor.
Sorry, didn't introduce myself to you. Thanks for the great meeting followup. Had a really good time and really appreciative of Roy being so generous and having us all over. His tank and set up is KILLER!

Both good skimmers, tough choice.
I will speak from my experience here for what it's worth...
I am a die hard SRO fan as of lately.
The SRO XP3000 is an amazing skimmer. I run the xp3000 and a 5000 int at the same time on my system.
Honestly the XP3000 int skims as much as the 5000, it's a nice design.
I think someone has an xp3000 for sale here if you could fit it in your sump, used. I bought mine used and saved a bundle. Been running it for several years with 0 issues.
Good luck!!
Man, that's a lot of skimming! How big is your tank? Yea, the SRO sounds like a tried and true alternative. I may be able to fit a 3000 and vaguely remember seeing one on here. I'll have to search the forum a bit.
How much value is there in speed control of a DC motor in a skimmer? The energy savings is tiny and I'm not concerned with the noise level.

I've been looking at skimmers for a while for an approx 90 gal tank and have narrowed it down to a SRO 2000 INT or a Skimz 163 DC. Both are in the same price range. The SRO doesn't have a controllable pump and don't know how beneficial this really is. I've heard great feedback from the SRO pumps as far as durability but online reviews of the Skimz are good as well.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

I'm sure this question has come up before, but is it necessary to purchase silicone labeled as aquarium safe or is all 100% silicone fine once cured? The kitchen and bath silicone seems to be treated with a mildew inhibitor so would stay away from these. Thanks.

Got these two last Friday. Add to my goni garden.

Very nice! I have a similar alveo that has done great and grown significantly. Do you find it necessary to routinely feed them? I did quite a bit the first 6 months with goniopower but tapered off for the last 4 or so months and don't know if I've seen much of a difference in growth or polyp extension. My clowns even found a home in it!

I just signed up to the forum and haven't been to a meeting yet, looking like a good one to come to. Do you just come on up or have to rsvp?

They retail for $108 bucks! Pretty amazing. Got lucky and found they keep them in stock at Wet Spot off Sandy. They had a 10% off sale too. The quality is OK, probably 1/4" glass, untempered, black silicone. Drilling was a breeze.

Well the IM 20 has been set up for 3 yrs and busting at the seams with growth. Can't bring myself to give things a trim. Due to having the baby and limited funds, setting up an "evil" growout tank in the basement to tide me over til I can splurge on a custom display. But trying to purchase gear that will transfer over when the time comes.
Here's what I've bought so far:
2' x 4' x 10" frag tank from zoomed
Glass holes.com 700 gph overflow
Trigger ruby 36 sump
Reef Octopus various 6 DC return pump
Mp40
Apex controller from the old tank
Busted out the ole Sunsystems metal halide fixture collecting dust and put in a 250 w Hamilton MH lamp. We'll se how it goes. The color is beautiful.
Ordered all of my plumbing and manifold parts last week so that is the next step. Have 40 lbs of BRS pukani curing as well.
Any recommendations on a skimmer? Right now looking at a Skimz SM 163 DC. The future display would't exceed 100 gallons.
Here are some pics. I'll lower the reflector once the tank is going.

That's an absolutely beautiful forest fire. I picked one up a couple of years ago and couldn't maintain the green. Nice score!
