  1. 55 FOWLR setup

    Used:

    55 gallon,stand and canopy

So I was planning on plumbing and drilling but after testing glass will polarized glasses I found that every pane is tempered 😖 i dont want to do a hang on overflow box because I've heard of all the accident that they do and I really don't want to run a air pump. I do have canister filters but want the sump so I'm thinking about doing the "DIY kings pvc overflow " so I can run a sump and also doing the updated version with the weir.  And another thing I need to decide is if I should split the return to DT to have 2 returns and 1 drain to sump. Maybe have it all centered on back wall and return heads pointing towards bottom mid corners. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance 20210712_221402.thumb.jpg.86ed5ccc194bc53443596c12266c42f9.jpg20210712_134807.thumb.jpg.7e9ec3d784d2426111b7ba1f559e8f56.jpgScreenshot_20210713-002149_YouTube.thumb.jpg.d1a87509c4d7bec8b69655473ee40b2f.jpg20210712_201525.thumb.jpg.89d217a8c2ecd29241c661ac3ee097d7.jpg

Hello my name is Halen and I am a hobbyist as well as the owner of Anglers Reef where we sell all types of coral, Orphek LED light bars and Triton Lab ICP tests.

I joined this group in order to get more involved in the community, learn new things, help others and build relationships with other community members.

My start into the hobby was was not at my free will. A friend of my wife's and I showed us his saltwater aquarium where my wife Brooke, decided she had to have one and pestered me until I caved. The next day we had a 46g bowfront with sand, water and live rock sitting in our living room.

Brooke's interest in saltwater left at about the time she found out how long a saltwater aquarium takes to cycle, leaving me, who had no interest in saltwater aquariums, to manage this thing on my own. I wasn't about to throw all the money we has spent down the drain so I decided to ride it out and see where things go. It only took a couple days until the obsession took off, the live rock truly came to life with pods, bristle worms, stomatella snails and brittle stars. It was so interesting to me that I went out and bought more live rock to see what else I could discover. This is when I acquired my first coral, a small button looking polyp on my second piece of live rock. Two days later this little button opened up and there was my very first, green Palythoa. All these years have gone by and if you visit my website, you will find green Palythoa for sale, from my first ever coral.

Thank you for taking the time to read my introduction and if you would like to see my first ever coral, visit my website at  https://anglers-reef.com/  and visit the Soft Coral tab.

    Welcome 🙏

Well posted in another forum, but figured I'd officially introduce myself here. I've been running a Waterbox 180.5 since October, 2020. I'm in Elmira, OR and have lived here most of my adult life.

Had a tank years ago and didn't do much research/planning. Purchased the running tank off of Craigslist. It was already dealing with green hair algae, but I didn't know much better. At any rate, due to my lack of planning and research, the tank never got over the ugly phase and I grew frustrated and quit.

Fast forward to now, I took more time to plan out my build and learn as much as I could. Still making mistakes here and there, but I feel like I'm much  more successful this time and am learning from my mistakes.

Tank is stocked several fish (cowfish, tang, clowns, trigger, etc) and mostly softies. Running Apex, Trident, couple MP40s, AI Hyrda 32 HD lights, skimmer and BRS reactors for carbon and rowaphos. Just now getting ready to start a refugium.

Great to have this group and look forward to chatting with you all!

Welcome to the group, I've learned alot from watching brs on YouTube. But also learned alot the hard way lol, welcome

Glad you got the help you needed. This forum has been a little slow due to the pandemic and not having any face to face meetings. We just met yesterday saying how we want to start having more meetings  in people’s homes again so kind of you to offer your home.

Lol yea but it seems like everything is starting to open up.lol I have a small condo and a single car garage which will be my fish room, its just crammed atm so I've been busy working on that.

Thanks for all the great feedback. I decided to remove the insert. I had some questions about stocking.

The main reason for going barebottom is for maintenance reduction.

1-is it possible to use mainly auto feeder and achieve success for the long term? I mean is it possible to avoid frozen food and nori for the most part. May be once a week or two. I was thinking of using several auto feeders with different fish food. For example, one freeze dried mysis, one with mainly herbivore pellets, and another you name it. And may be 2-3x total feedings per day. The pumps will be timed accordingly and proper feeding rings for each auto feeder.

2-if so which fish would fit this scheme?

3-What is the longest time that you can go to vacation for? (I know it feels orthogonal but it is also a fubction of the live stock. )

    Thanks for reading:)

I wouldn't trust auto feeders because they will fail.i havent taken a vacation because I didn't feel my tank was stable enough but it is now. Advise a Apex controller to keep updates on parameters. Im to cheap for alex atm but I have a camera so if I have service I can check in and also have digital read outs I can see from camera. Mainly temp and PH  and have a gravity fed auto top off with float valve. Growing macroalgea could help with the algea eaters.idk something will fail, just have to be ready for it.good luck

Also I try to have a balance with stock. Clowns, lawnmower blenny(cleaner), scopas tang(cleaner),6line(cleaner),plus hermits, snails, starfish, macroalgea in sump all in a 40 breeder.

  8. huge thanks to@ blue z reef, he has been a huge mentor in helping me an guiding me in this hobby and his tank is just hypnotizing.

also want to thank@ Hayes, for all the usable equipment he was parting with as now im making a fish room and they can all be used.

also i cant forget@ reeftank225, thx for some nice pieces and allowing me to see that massive pool you call a tank lol.

and last but not least thanks to the admin and forum for having this awesome place to share the love for this hobby/life.

....side note, when i get my garage fish room up and running i will be brewing up some phyto for trade or sale, and possibly have a BBQ and i will welcome any of you over.the tanks wont be fully stocked yet but i will take donations, frags, usable equipment, rehome any marine life in them ...menu would probably be hot dogs, hot links, hamburgers and some other random things maybe(free for reefers) but maybe ill charge for drinks lol....fish room has 2x40 breeder,50 lowboy,55 and some other small tanks.its still all in planning and in construction. let me know if any of you are interested just to kinda get a head count. much love-Rick

While you can see the detritus that builds up on bare bottom tanks, that's also the biggest benefit. You can just siphon it all super easily. When you have sand, you're never able to clean up the detritus as easily. Always pros and cons.

Agreed. If I go bare bottom again ill have a massive sump with tons of rock or walls of bio balls lol and maybe a tiny refugium.

  10. I'm looking for a elegance coral because I cant keep a nem in my main tank without big problems. I've put my nems into my designated nem nano tank. But I still have to keep my pair clowns separate so I'm looking for a elegance that they can host, instead of them hosting my mummy eye.I have a few things I may have for a trade. Branching Splatter hammers, highlighter torch,RBTA,my DIY Phytoplankton.also have a reactor. Please let me know. Thx in advance. Im in Vancouver wa.20210702_123746.thumb.jpg.db3e8231fa92f2ae42ea62375a3b162d.jpg20210702_122853.thumb.jpg.7dc744d8b06d256332110a7d380ac531.jpg20210620_201743.thumb.jpg.8a1958c86ecf5d41de899f609eee479a.jpg
