Not true, I have mine with a 1200GPH return and they are doing fine.

I find it helpful to give them a vinegar rinse every couple months for a few minutes. Keeps em running smooth

I went from bulkhead to true union then to splitters. True Union is a ball valve with a Union on both ends It is upside down because it was still drying. There are now true unions after the splits as well
