  1. I have a 30x30x18 cube so I got the at 25" 8 bulb dimmable. I am not looking forward to the $150 a year on bulb replacement.... but everything in my tank has exploded growth wise in the 3 months that I have been running the light.

    Do you use ATI?

  2. Alright let's take this conversation in a slightly different direction and make it a T5 vs LED talk. Not fixtures but solely the lighting types and what you prefer. [emoji4]

I've always had LEDs myself and have had fairly good success with them. But I know some people rave about their T5 fixtures. So let's hear it, what do you prefer and why. We've touched on the topic by haven't dived into it yet in this thread. Also the cons and pros you have noticed would be awesome. :)

  3. If you want to try to make them split, use temp! That's what I did....on accident... And the little guy split right in half. He had made his way into one of my filter socks and while cleaning the tank I set the sock outside...in the rain...when it was about 50 degrees...popped that guy back into the tank and bam what do ya know, he split haha. Maybe lower your temp by a few degrees one day and raise it back to normal the next?

  4. Good thread, there are almost a ridiculous number of choices now.

I will throw one in the mix for your research.

I bought the retro kit and popped a board into one of my old d120s.

The color is good, coral still seems happy. I haven't seen amazing or terrible results.

Read more here on why they think their lights are great:

I was actually just looking at those the other day! I have an old reef star that is going bad and have been thinking of buying the upgrade for "black boxes". I am pretty temped to upgrade the reef star and run that over the new tank. Not to bad for a $70 upgrade. How long have you been running the SB light?

  5. I have a 6 bulb T5 fixture and it supports my 3 anemones. I am also growing SPS on the sand, which is 24" down.

I have not had good luck with Ocean Revive fixtures myself so I would steer away from there IME.

what T5 fixture are you using?

  6. I will keep a little bit of SPS, just some of my favorite. Not a lot though. Mostly gonna do LPS and zoas!

I do love me LEDs, that's all I've ever used! I'm almost leaning more that way for this build. But still not 100% sure yet.

  7. So I'm starting to plan my build super far in advance (about 5 months) to make sure I get everything perfect! I'm going to be picking up a 45 JBJ this next week. And they start collecting equipment. I am not sure what light I want to run above it yet and need some input! I'm very tempted to spend a little extra and buy a nice controllable LED, but I've also had good success with my OR T-247s. I plan for it to be a mixed reef with my focus more on anemones, LPS, and zoas. A few sticks here and there but not a lot. The tank is 26.5 x 21 x 19.

With all that being said, what light would you recommend??

There is a 40 gallon IM on Craigslist in Portland. $400 for everything except lights. I was going to get it but found a JBJ 45 I'm gonna get :)

I contacted him! When I tried to set up a time and date to drive over (it's about a 5 hr drive for me) he wouldn't answer via email or text [emoji45]

oh man where are you from?

When I talked to him about a week ago he said he was going to be gone starting this weekend I think. Not sure for how long or where. I think he was also a member on here so maybe dog through the old classified threads and send him a pm :)

  9. How do you gravity feed ATO? Just set amount drip/day?

I have a little float ball thing(can't remember proper term ha). Basically I have my bucket that sits above the sump with a while drilled in the bottom. Basic RODI tubing goes into the hole and then runs down to my sump where the ball valve is. When the water level drops the valve lowers allowing water to drip in. Then closes again when the water level rises.

It's not nearly as complicated as it sounds haha.

Float switch thing I'm referring too. I used a different one though.
