Help with sump

See image for my sump, Try not to laugh, im not very good with MS Paint(scratch) The tank is a standard 38 gal. which is 36 1/4 x12 5/8 x19 3/4. More like 19" high and knock of 1/2" for glass thickness on length and width... My question is, how big to make my return section. I am not going to run a auto-top off for now, but i want to leave it big enough that i will only have to top it off say, once a day and have no fear of running dry. The drain/skimmer section is set by my skimmer and will probably end up being 11-12" long plus 2&3/4" for bubble trap baffles. So that leaves me 21" of length for return and refug. I would like to make refug as big as possible and if you notice, im going to run a pipe off of return to feed refug. Oh and how high should i run the Refug baffle, the bubble trap baffles will be cut to 10". But i thought of running the Refug baffle at least 15" high, than running a pipe with a bulkhead back down to return to limit waterfall noise. thanks conv_12345.bmp

Ya, Im trying to make time tomorrow to go to The premium Aquarium. NEED DIY sump help, I bought a new 38 gal reg. tank for sump/refug (trying to figure out sump-return-refug).... The 38 gallon refugium tank the CL seller was stating is wrong(flame) its a 29 gal. reg, but no worries didnt want it anyways(going to give it away for free). Anyways more stuff i got for $300 old school bullet PM with gx 2400 pump... I ordered a new 6" octopus skimmer. This PM could be a backup skimmer, I have read really good things about PM skimmers.. also got a RIO 2100 pump that he used as a return... I havent opened up the GX pump, but i opened up the rio and it look good...

  6. Well here i go on my build(yahoo) sorry (jmetz32):( your tank is nice.. As some of ya might know, i am a freshwater guy who decided to go salt... Why? i dont know? my African Cichlids were very pretty and very temperamental... Maybe i wanted critters; e.g. things my cichlids would kill in a heartbeat like hermits or tube worms, y'all know what im talking about... More than just fish, a whole ecosystem(agree)... Anyways enough typing:)... So if you read my NOOB thread you will know that i was contemplating this.. 75 gallon glass aquarium with Internal Overflow Glass tops Cherry Cabinet Power compact lighting with LED night lights Skimmer Pump Pacific Imports CL300 Chiller 38 gallon refugium tank 100+ pounds live rock Plumbed with PVC piping

    NOOB

Ya, i visited Coral Reef in Salem and was grateful for their knowledge but kinda high priced... i just learned about premium aquarium today off of this forum... I thought they were just a maintenance place... Im all about little critters running around my tank, with freshwater you kinda limited to fish and some snails... what i like about salt is the little critters that i can see and of course the fish. My thought is i can spend $500 setting my 45 gal up or i can upgrade to 75+ tank for that amount off of craigslist with sump, lights, plumbing etc. My fear is that considering i havent ran sump or anything that i wont be able to set it back up... :(

    NOOB

Hey guys and gals.... I'm trying to set up a saltwater aquarium and have never ran saltwater. I'm not completely new to aquariums, i ran a 75gal+ and then downsize to a 45 gal African Cichlid tank for years. But never dealt with sumps, canisters, etc. Just ran HOB and keep a nice bed for bacteria... I was thinking about getting back into the hobby, but want salt and only salt. But don't want to spend an arm and a leg, "need both for work:)". I still have my 45gal. Tall and thought it would be a good start for a FOWLR with some beginner coral, etc.
