  1. Are those pic's of the tide pools at "Sharks Cove"? I got to drive by there but wasnt able to stop.

This one is Pupukea (aka Shark's Cove) at low tide.

My daughter (3 year old) loves it there. Its also one of the few places on the North Shore that is fairly calm all year round.

She loves tide pools! This is what we collected on Saturday. Brittle Stars, Zebra Hermits, and some Hawaiian Turbos.

  2. My girlfriend has been to Hawaii 3 times but I have yet to go. She keeps telling me I'll love it there. I keep telling her I'll spend the whole time under water! These shots are just more fuel to the fire of why I would rather stay under water while there... Thanks for sharing

You should definitely take the trip! Just get in touch with me before you do. Here are some pics that may keep you out of the water.

Sorry, taking pictures is another hobby of mine...

You said that you could collect zoas... Can you collect fungia? Are they considered "reef building" even though they are free living?

I've traveled this road already with the state. When they die they leave a skeleton. For this reason the state considers them reef building. I guess the technically are.

So you are saying if I went to those locations that it would be illegal for me to collect the zoas that are there. If there was a local there' date=' would they be able to collect them for me and give/sell them to me?[/quote']

It is illegal to take anything out of the water without a permit. Except live sand. Even as a local you need at least an aquarium permit.

Me and my wife are planning a trip there in the summer of 2011. It would be nice if I had a local tell all the good places to go snorkel/SCUBA dive.

    Thanks

    dsoz

Look me before you come. I can take you to the non-tourist spots to see the real reefs.

  3. I was going to show a few to mytshall since we were talking about Zoas in the wild. I figured i would post the pictures i took while snorkeling in Kaneohe Bay.

I bought a Olympus point & shoot (underwater) last year. Went out to a place where a few of my mother colonies were collected to test it out.

  4. There are some pretty big ones out here in Hawaii. I've seen them in the tide pools at night up to 10-12" long. The ones here ink like an octopus, but it is blood red.

They are very good at tank clean up. I've yet to see one small enough to collect and sell. Most are way too big for anyone to want.

Sorry i missed this. Got to set my subscription options.

I get over to Maui every now and again for business with my day job. Maui is beautifully, especially up-country.

Lahaina is cool too. Reminds me of New England where i was born and raised. I'll be over in Maui again in May. If you head over to Oahu, make sure you get in touch with me.

I paid/donated for sponsorship here a couple days ago. PNWMAS will get 10% off via coupon code. (Sort of Kama'aina) I'll set it up once my forum here is up. I am having a huge Aloha Friday sale this weekend. Since its my birthday weekend too livestock is 25%-35% off.

  6. So is it legal for me to go to Hawaii let's say in two weeks and harvest zoas and ship them back to the mainland?

With out a permit it would be illegal to collect anything. The permits are only open to Hawaii residents, so "by law" you would not be able to.

    Kevin

  7. Aloha PNWMAS,

Good 'ol Google Analytics brought me to this thread. :) I'm Kevin, I'm the owner of the place linked above. I just wanted to make a quick post to clear up a few things about the laws in my state.

    Fish:

As long as the fish is not venomous or poisonous (i think they are one in the same) they are allowed in the state.

    Non-Local Coral:

According to state law, you may not import any coral at all to the state. There is only one place able to do that and it is Waikiki Aquarium.

    Local Coral:

You may not collect any coral from Hawaiian waters that is considered reef building.

You may collect Hawaiian Soft coral with a free permit, but at limited quantity.

Myself, I needed more licensing in order to collect, propagate, and sell for a commercial purpose.

    Live Rock:

You can not collect live rock in Hawaii.

    Live Sand:

One gallon per day per person. No permit needed.

Doesn't look like he has too much of a selection.

I am interested seeing what is coming spring.

    Clay

Spring is going to bring in LPS and SPS, but not Hawaiian or even held in Hawaii. It will be housed in a Massachusetts facility I'm in the process of building for my father to operate.

    Aloha,

    Kevin

PS: Mods, please send me some sponsorship information. Mahalo.
