  1. There are DIY aquarium controllers out there that you can build at a fraction of the cost. But, then you have to program it (and the device you make will be huge in comparison to a brand name controller). When I shopped for a controller, I thought about this and I asked myself, do I really want to spend more time tweaking something for my aquarium? Also, I don't want to program something and troubleshoot the code to get it to work and use my aquarium to test it out. For example, you can build an arduino type controller and program it. You might even be able to get the reef angel open source software on it. But then you have to install it old school. Kind of like configuring a linux OS. It can be done, but it will take time and you might miss something. If you could ask your fish if they thought this was a good idea, then they would probably say, "No, that is a horrible idea." (nono) At the end of the day, it is nice to have something that is plug and play and go.
  2. Well, we can call it an experiment as well. If those with upside down frags have poor growth, then I guess there will be something to gripe about. My frag was upside down as well. Personally, I have noticed that my frag is elongating a bit, the "head" is healing and there is a nub growing off of the side. So, looking at the other pictures, I don't think I have much to complain about. Besides, imagine the bragging rights if your frag ends up bigger with this supposed setback.
  3. Let's try this again. I got my official ruler now and though it was smashed the one end is still good. 13 mm.
  4. "Why don't you give me ape tit for $200." (Rim)
  5. I didn't know there even was an official ruler because I didn't get one. (sad) How can I get one? And yes my plug is upside down, which I noticed when I first got the frag. It should be interesting to see what it does.
  6. I am using a measuring ruler that has no reveal so I can set it right on the plug. As of today (April 24th) the frag measures roughly 12 mm. Equipment I am running a 30 gallon mixed reef tank. This tank went into action around mid-2011. It is well-established and has an abundance of pods that I have to scrub off the face of the tank everyday. It is an upgrade from a BioCube 29 (which falls far short of 29 gallons). The display tank is 30 gallon acrylic and the sump is a 15 gallon acrylic. The return pump is a 600 GPH Oceanrunner and I use a Vortech MP10ES on the reef crest setting (highest at day and turned down at night). For filtration, I have a freshly broken in Eshopps S-120 Economy Cone Skimmer and I use ChemiPure Elite to help deal with chemical warfare from all of my corals. I have a 24 Cree LED (12 XP-G White, 12 XP-E Royal Blue) DIY fixture for lighting. Upgrades are on the horizon. I will be doing a lighting upgrade (12 more royal blue LEDs) followed by a tank upgrade (50 gallon display). Frag placement I placed the frag within the top 6 inches of water column on mini frag rack. Dosing I use a Reefkeeper Lite with kalkwasser auto topoff using pH to controller option. I also do some occassional dosing for alk, calcium and magnesium to maintain parameters. I also perform weekly 5 gallon water changes.
  7. I have set up an Ecoxotic EcoPico and I have been migrating assorted softies from my 30 gallon to it. I think I was inspired as well by the pest tank, and it is making slow progress as well. In fact, I just discovered some clove polyps on a frag that needed movement over to the pico and I am pretty glad I caught them before they found their way to my rock work. It's nice to have a place to put stuff that is not stuff I want but am hesitant to get rid of because it still looks cool.
  8. That's a great amount of light for your tank. How much did the "bulb" run you?
  9. What size are the teeth and the gaps on the overflow?
  10. I got the email. Some items don't go lower because some companies do not allow BRS to reduce their prices beyond a certain point. But, there are some great deals on here. Happy shopping everyone!
  11. It's all coming together nicely. Nice work on everything. That fan looks so tiny! What size fan did you go with?
  12. What's your sps frag up there?
  13. That's cool that the mantis casually comes out for for the food. I was wondering: does the mantis ever beat on the glass or is he satisfied with his lot?
  14. Just brainstorming... using a bigger fan, ventilating opening up the stand to let more heat escape, dropping in some RO ice cubes into the sump (works just fine on a nano/pico setup). Turning off some of the pumps/powerheads might help as well, but then you have less flow. :(
  15. I think more detail as far as what is included with it would help. Bulkheads, loc line, powerhead, heater etc.
  16. Hmm. I never thought of that aspect of ocellaris. I was actually amazed how long-lived they are. I got a pair in 1999 and one is still alive at my family's house in Illinois. The pair were separated by a thin sheet of plastic and they both became females and then there was murderous vengeance for all the bullying over the years.
  17. What kind of clowns are you thinking of getting?
  18. Nice transition! So, what's your livestock plan now? You have any plans for some more fish now that you have more space?
  19. That's handy. The Nautilus in Springfield Also, you put TECO in twice.
  20. There was no "lightning storm" in my tank last night so I think this was indeed the problem. I guess now I will see if it works long-term.
  21. Noob, I noticed you have a DIY setup and a reefkeeper lite. I am wondering if you have your LED drivers plugged into slots 1 and 4? These two ports have mechanical relays instead of solid state relays. I noticed something similar lightning storm thing happening last night on my tank after I added a reef keeper. Note: I had my drivers plugged into 3 and 4 yesterday. After doing a bit of reading about it, it seems that LED drivers may require you to use ports 1 and 4 on your PC1 for the LEDs because they have a poor power factor. I am trying it out and seeing if it does it again tonight. I am curious if this will solve the issue. Now I just need to find another port to stick my top off plug onto. (scratch)
  22. The new tank is shaping up for you. What kind of skimmer is that?
