How are you getting your rock? If it is at a LFS then you don't need to know the names, you just buy the pieces that you like. If you are ordering it online, then you need to know the names of the different types, which is usually named after where it comes from. After that, it is all personal preference.
Have you considered man-made concrete rock? I use some of it in my tank, and a lot of other people have some in their tanks too. Once it gets growing coraline or coral over it you can't tell the difference. I have a bunch of man-made rock that is tank ready (it actually has palythoas and halimeda algae growing in with it right now). You can buy concrete rock at a fraction of the cost of "real" rock and it does not deplete resources out of the ocean. Send me a PM if you want to come look at some.

On the camera there should be a minimum distance for macro shots. I found mine on the lens. On the front of the camera near the lens there is a picture of a flower (macro symbol) and it says 0.25m/0.8ft. So my minimum focus distance is a little less than a foot. Any closer and the camera will not focus no matter what. So you move the camera back a little and then zoom in. Make sure that the camera is set to macro mode (picture of a little flower setting).
The next trick is to shoot the clearest pic you can with the highest resolution. Then zoom and crop on the computer using photoshop or picassa. If the resolution is high enough you can zoom quite a bit before the quality goes down so far that you can't see what it is anymore.

Eric, you need to be careful with that kalk. I told you it would obliterate any zoas that it was dropped on. It is about as subtle as a nuclear bomb...

I have some MRAs that you gave to me before. If you want some of them back you are more than welcome.

acrylic can be drilled with standard hole saws like you would for wood.
Don't let the saw stop spinning while it is still in the acrylic. The friction from the saw starts the acrylic melting. If the saw stops moving the acrylic hardens almost instantly and the hole saw becomes part of the tank. If you need to stop the cutting, take the saw out of the acrylic first, then let go of the trigger on the drill.
It sounds like you have been doing research. This is a good thing. Good luck with your tank, and don't forget to take pictures of the setup process. They may be boring to you but we all like a good build thread.

Were you in SWF today getting garlic? If you were, I was the guy that was getting the wrasse.

Also test for ammonia and nitrite in the water from the bucket. If it has ammonia then you want to cycle the rock in the bucket of salt water with a heater and powerhead for several weeks until there is no smell (other than tidepool), and no detectable ammonia or nitrite.

If all else fails, keep it in case you get bryopsis algae. Only the Tech-M gets rid of it.

An emerald crab or four MAY help in the tub, but make sure they do not get transferred to the main tank when you set it up. They can hide in holes and cracks. If they get loose in the main tank, sometimes they go rogue and start to eat stuff that you want.

Try using a copper absorbing pad. I believe that they sell them in most LFS, but I know that Upscales has them. The pads turn different colors if different metals are in the tank. Green indicates copper (I think).

I have a conference that is in Eugene next month and I need to spend the night in a hotel. Point me to a place that is kinda nice, and near the Lane County ESD (1200 Hwy 99 North). From the looks of the map it is near Lane College. I don't want the Hilton, but I don't want a flea-bit motel either. Someplace you would allow family to stay.
I am going to have to meet with some of you while I am down there.
Thanks

20 ppm phosphate!!! That is a lot of phosphate. Did you dump is fertilizer or something? I was battling algae when my phosphate was 0.04 ppm...

Welcome.
Glad you found the board. Don't forget that everyone on here is a potential trade, buy or sell for you. You are not limited to just shops.
Depends on where in SE you are, but I would try to find Nano reef on Stark west of I205, and Saltwater Fantaseas on Sandy to the east of I205. Rose City on Powell somewhere in the 30th or 40th block is also not a shop to miss. Also The Coral Mafia is a great place, Isaac has some awesome corals at good prices. If you are into high end corals, don't miss Ocean in a Box in Vancouver. Perry has some great ebay auctions about every other week, and now he just opened up his store to the public.
Those are all sponsors, but there are some that are not sponsors as well.

You are welcome. It was nice to see you and your tank again. Thanks for the coral.

Yep, fish tank, rock band, big TV, PS3 and Wii all in the same man cave. My rock band drums don't make it into pictures because they are separated by a wall.
I have rock band, rock band 2, and The Beatles Rock band. Of the three, I like the Beatles one the best. My friend had guitar hero and rock band and he says that the rock band drum set is better because the guitar hero drum set falls apart faster.

Chocolate chip stars are cheep, and you can cut an arm of one and feed it to the shrimp each week or so. At that rate it is about $5-10 a month to feed the critter. If you have enough stars in enough different tanks you can rotate through cuttings and keep your shrimp fed and still keep the food supply around. The star will grow back a new arm in a month or two.
It is a gross practice that I can't see myself doing, but some people like keeping the shrimp enough that they will sacrifice a star a month to keep the shrimp happy and fed.
On the other hand, most of us eat meat. Some people must keep cows, chickens, and pigs to keep us happy and fed...

Did you see the asterina in the lower right corner of the picture? Maybe that is what the shrimp is looking for...

several people have used the prodibio method. Some found some success, some have given up on it as a lost cause. Let them chime in.
