cellowithgills
Just wondering if anyone has built an algae screen filter onto their sump? If you don't know what it is here's a nifty link for you: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=180385
snowpunk
nope, but I may give it a try and see what the results are. I have everything I would need already (including the algae)
cellowithgills
I tried it earlier today but I wasn't getting good flow down the screen. So I was wondering if anyone knew how to make it work. Also, I had the idea to hook one up on a surge device, and was wondering what others thought. mwheeler
Hmm. I wonder how well this works.
cellowithgills
If you read through the rest of the thread some people have nothing but this filtering their tank, and their parameters are 0 all around. I'd say that means it works.
snowpunk
What is your issue with the flow? He has a basic list of what flow per the size you use. did you go by that. My other thought immediately was it may be better to either pump from both sides with either one pump Y'ed off or to separate ones. Flowing from one side may create an uneven growth over time and more then anything I just like symmetry I guess...lol If you do more searches you'll find many more of these and their are some pretty elaborate ones too so you may be able to get some ideas on how to improve upon what you have already... Barelycuda
If you are serious about running a turf scrubber you need to check out http://www.algaescrubber.net/forums/ There is a ton of information on turf scrubbers on that site. It goes into design, flow, lighting ect. There actually is quite a bit to the design but can be highly effective if built right. I have a large scrubber on the growout system in the clownhouse. I believe it is 12"x22". You have to be diligent on the maintenance and cleaning tho or they are worthless.
cellowithgills
The water wasn't coming down uniformly on the screen. I suspect that it has something to do with the cut I did on the pvc.
wanareef
Looks interesting but did you see this http://www.algaescrubber.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=502 the Algae Scrubber 100?
Trautman
cool idea. maybe worth 50$... i will never pay that much for a box! i think that it would be worth it to experiment a bit
jgf86123
I'd actually pay that for it if I had the money to blow.
cellowithgills
Buying that would cost more than my entire set up. The one I'm running has been up for 4 weeks (it's on a freshwater tank), but even with uneven flow weak-ish lights, it's got the first and second stage algea growing on it. The bucket it's in has almost as much growing on the sides as the screen does.
TheGooseWhisperer
I've been reading through the algae scrubbers forum for hours this morning and I think I am absolutely going to give one of these a shot. I'm not really having algae growth problems, but I have my feeding so low that I am getting minimal growth out of my corals too. I got spare parts to make the scrubber, but I don't have a sump installed. Somehow i gotta scrape up a hundred bucks or so for an overflow and return pump....maybe my future GFO savings will just fall out of the sky?!? AC-k3v
I had one set up on my display for about a half hour. It was way too loud.
TheGooseWhisperer
Well noise would certainly be a problem. I have a MJ900 to power it and with a 29g tank and the ATS lit on one side the screen would only be 6 inches by 10 inches. I hope that will be fairly quiet. In terms of the noise issue can you tell me a little more about your attempt at this?
Drew
Just wondering if anyone has built an algae screen filter onto their sump? If you don't know what it is here's a nifty link for you: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=180385 Is this pretty much the same as a simple UV Sterilizer?
Trautman
no- the lights on a uv sterilizer need to emit the proper uv spectrum, which would be harmful to algae (i think). it is certainly harmful to coral, that is why there is an extra filter on Mh bulbs/ HQI bulbs, otherwise the coral bleaches and dies. may be it would work with algae
TheGooseWhisperer
UV Sterilizers kill water borne parasites (well, thats what you want them to kill...they actually kill anything living) using UV light. The algae turf scrubbers (ATS) are a setup to grow algae for the purposes of removing nitrates and phosphates from your water.
