cschwarz
dose dosing Vodka in your reef tank really help lower your nitrates and phosphates? and how? just carious.
andy
Yes. The carbohydrates in the alcohol feed the nitrifying bacteria in the aquarium, allowing them to increase their population and convert more NO4 to nitrogen and oxygen. Note that it isn't a technique for everyone. It isn't something to be done casually, or quickly. It's risky, but can provide amazing results. And spectacular failures. Too dramatic? :-D
moovinfast
Make sure you really read up on it before you try and go SLOW. You can accidentally kill everything in your tank if you rush it, but it does work. We did it for a while.
Emerald525
Colton, here's a great thread about the process: http://www.pnwmas.org/forums/showthread.php?t=19870
Lowman
I was doing it, and having great results, I got up to 4.5ml and had the worst cyno outbreak I have ever had. My tank still hasn't recovered from it. So, I am not sold on vodka dosing personally
Rick
Be careful if you try this, If you dose too much too fast then you can cause an algae bloom that literally suffocates the fish. (Spoken from personal experience)
fpd4308
Ya I know 5 or 6 people who tried it and when they got up to the higher amounts they all had a crash of one sort or another. I will definitely stick to the old tried and true stuff.
cschwarz
ya. i will just do it the old fashion way lol. way to much a gamble for me.
ReeFit
There are alternatives. Look into biofuel by brightwell.
finch6013
I dosed vodka in a small tank with great results for about a year. Now I use Bio pellets in a reactor to tumble them. Very low risk, and so far I am having results.
reef165
Why is it that the ones that have tryed it say they got up to x amount of it then the tank crashed? Why would you keep dosing more and more?
finch6013
Not sure why you would dose more. From my understanding you up the dosage till you see a good decrease in N&P and then decrease to a maintenance dose of about half or whatever it takes to keep it maintained at the low level. When I dosed VSV I got up to 40 ish ML per day and then once I lowered N&P I dosed about 15ml per day.
Emerald525
I was curious about the biopellets that BRS is now selling but wanted to see how dosing went for other people
finch6013
I was curious about the biopellets that BRS is now selling but wanted to see how dosing went for other people BRS pellets came out right after I got my Warner Marine Eco Bac pellets. I would assume that what BRS sells is very similar if not identical to all the other Bio pellets out there. I would trust BRS.
Emerald525
Yeah BRS is a good company. It seems like a good product and the price is reasonable.
reef165
Ya, I would assume that nitrates rais do to not enouph bio in the tank, dosing V would raise the level of bio, thats how it works right? well why would you keep adding more andore to get results then back it way off to sustain it? Why couldnt you just dose with x amount constant? it may take a bit longer but as with everything in the hobbie.

I tried a maintained dose and only got the N&P down so far. But once I upped the dose by a small amount per week the N&P went down to a level that they never went any lower. Even with more VSV. I guess it takes so much to lower hight levels but to maintain bacteria and keep your levels low once there it doesn't take as much.
tigerv503
Yes Vodka dosing does work but you have to follow the procedures carefully. Vin B.O.M "Blue Ocean Marines Inc."
markdadof2
A much safer method (IMHO) would be a zeo method. I currently use the Brightwell products.
