USCG CWO
How long do external pumps usually last? I have a Blueline 40 HD I have had about 8 months and the hum has become quite annoying over the last couple of days. It used to be barely noticeable. Do you clean yours or just run it till it wears out?
Michael7979
Where did you get it at? I'd contact them and tell them of the pending trouble. They might have an idea of what is causing it. And if it does fail then you gave them a warning before you turn it in to be fixed by warranty. I would think it should last a lot longer then 8 months! If that's their lifespan I will never get one. USCG CWO
I got it at a LFS. It has been a great pump so far. Just got....ummm, hummy, is that a word? I know the bearings are sealed and such. I am just wondering if they require maintenance. This is my first external pump.
chewie
There are ceramic bearings inside the wet-end of the pump that are replaceable. Take apart the pump and inspect for loose bearings. While it's apart plug in the motor to see if the hum is still there. The motor should run quietly with only the fan making noise. The motor bearings are serviceable but you'd have to send it in. USCG CWO
Roger that! I will take it apart and see what's what. Chewie do you guys sell the ceramic bearings if that's what it is?

steelhead77
Uhhh....I have a nice PCM 55.... you have a calc reactor......(whistle)
USCG CWO
LOL!! Sorry but the calc reactor is pending, but if it falls through and turns out I am in need of a new pump we'll talk.
Rick
It may just need to be cleaned. 8 months would be about the amount of time it would take to get a little buildup on the impeller. I assume you can take the end off to remove the impeller for cleaning.
USCG CWO
Looks like I can Rick. It is going to take some sump draining to remove it. I forgot to install a shut off valve in between the sump and pump when I hooked everything up. DOH! Not sure how I missed that. Maybe you can just pinch it off.

Rick
I am not that smart or lucky Rick.(sad) It is hard piped.(flame)What about capping the ends? You would still have whatever is in the pipes to deal with but it may be easier to do and you could then add in the valve or valves.
USCG CWO
I plan on capping it from inside the sump and then draining the access water it onto a bowl. Luckily it won't be alot water and then I will plumb in a shutoff valve when I take apart the pump.
Isaac
Shane, The pump probably just needs to be cleaned but if something is broken it should be covered under a one year warranty. Woody can warranty it for you if necessary. Those pumps should last several years. Also check the fan on the back. You may just need to dust it out. USCG CWO
Thanks Isaac I will check that to.
