Sorry to drudge up an old post, especially as a new member, but I did go to West Side Aquarium and Tim really is awesome. His live rock is beautiful and I felt I was stealing it at what he sells it for. We spent way too much time in the shop watching the fish and looking at the coral. He has some beautiful stuff and we will definately be visiting him again.

Went to see Tim at Westside Aquarium a couple of times now and I like him more and more each time I talk to him. I am disabled in a scooter and Tim is extremely helpful and accomidating to me. His live rock is awesome looking and you get a ton of it for the money. I highly recommend you get out to see him, I know my son-in-laws and I will be doing lots of business with Westside, it's nice to have someone close to Forest Grove that is knowledgable, has a good selection and has healthy and thriving animals!!! Go out to Westside Aquairum and give Tim a try!!! You wont regret it...

Thanks Tim!!!

I need to remember to leave my wallet at home when I visit Westside! I think 85% of the time I go there, I end up leaving with something. Kind of like Costco...........can't seem to get out of there without spending at least $50 or more!

Well I guess when Lilly sees this post she's going to kick my butt the next time I'm in(laugh)

reply to reefcam and everyone

reefcam - I have the same complaint! Our second trip to Tim's shop left us with lots of soft coral that we're enjoying every day. Our last trip was supposed to be only for some saltwater for a water change... however my daughter somehow ended up with more coral and a sunburst anthias which is gorgeous and very happy in his new home. I ended up with two more hermits and a sweet cowrie. I swear I am not taking the kids next time I go although I am sure they might lock me out of the house if they found out.

BTW, since I am new I should say Hello all. My name is Jurissah and I am addicted to saltwater. I am horrible at these forums, in fact this is probably the first I am actually joining. I grew up in Hawaii and our saltwater tank there was easy because we got water from the beach and that's also where we got our livestock. Here in Oregon, it's a totally different situation. It's actual hard work and dedication, but it sure pays off.

Welcome Jurissah... maybe we'll bump into each other at Westside. He's close to my work so I try to stop by often.

It is very different here in the states, unless you have a cold water tank and live by the coast. Plus, the corals are much more colorful in the states. :)

Thanks, Reefcam!

My 15 year old daughter is now obsessing over the thought of trying out a pico reef tank with just soft coral and a single seahorse. She is very sensitive to marine life and caretaking. We've had only freshwater since moving here - always single male bettas. My daughter Brodie picks out the ones who look like no one will take them - injured, deformed, or floating as if about to die. She brings them home and takes immaculate care of them. It's incredible how long they live with her in charge. One of them has a sideways face and has a hard time feeding but he's so much fun to interact with and he's just a doll. She pays so much attention to them, makes me proud!

We talked about saltwater for a long time because I wanted the kids to know what I got to experience (diving) as a kid and they all liked the idea but it took years (10 years in fact) before I thought they were ready to help be responsible. Now here we are, with dreams of more and more tanks.

We have 4 small freshwater with single malte bettas and two larger saltwater (one green wolf eel, the other with a bluehead wrasse and the anthias which are getting along stellar!). My brother bred saltwater fish in Hawaii and always has tips and wisdom to pass to me which I greatfully appreciate since I was uaually just requesting fish and my dad would bring them home to me in the morning. We're on the conservative side minimizing the number of fish and only really adjusting our cleaning crews until we expand. We're not looking to get more fish, but coral has become Brodie's target. I am content with what we have, but she wants more color. I like movement, she likes color. She does know that it will take time and patience, so for now we just map out future possibilities.

Sorry to write so much, I am just stoked that my kids are getting to take part in what I probably took for granted as a kid.

nah... glad to hear your kids are getting into the hobby with you. My kids wanted a tank in their room and I tried that for awhile and finally had to give it up. I didn't have time to maintenance their tanks so I consolidated their tanks and took it out of their room. Now that their tank is getting fed, they are more into it. I only have one saltwater tank and one thing it does is teach my kids what kind of fishes are compatible in a reef environment.

Let me be the first to tell you that your daughter is thinking the right way! It's ALL about color...movement is overrated...

Most beginners are fascinated by xenia and other soft corals that move...as time goes on, this stuff fades and soon you become fascinated with colorful acans, chalices, sps and so on. There are some cool things that have motion and are colorful...just keep looking around for things you like and research it before you buy it. Tim knows his stuff, so he will point you in the right direction.

Reefcam - it's great what taking care of fish can teach a kid (and even a grown up)!

Mandinga - oh wonderful! Side with my daughter :) I will have to show this to her - she will love it. And yes, Tim knows what he's doing and when my daughter walks in and starts talking to him, I know she's going to end up with something whether it's soemthing live or just new knowledge - but I can trust that he will steer her in the right direction!

Thanks for choosing as one of your favorite fish store, we will do our best so that you and your daughter will enjoy your fish tank many years to come.

Thank you.

Tim always has great stuff and prices. Here is my latest addition from westside. I got a harliquin shrimp too. But he is a bit busy in hidden place. I am glad to see the wrasse doing so good inspire of the quick acclimation. As getting out of the car and walkingto the house, the paper bag was a little damp and the fish bag fell to the ground and popped like a water balloon. I found tha wrasse an carried him into the house. In the tank he went. Six hours later he is doing his job like a champ. He was a little confused for acre minutes but seems to be doing great.

Thanks Tim! Great fish, just wish I didn't fumble him.
