  1. I've been keeping some mixed RO water and citric acid in a bucket and today I went to soak some equipment and found there was a weird film on top (It's been several weeks since I cleaned anything in it).  It was clear and seemed almost like a jelly fish and was easy enough to remove.  Is it anything to be concerned about?  Some sort of chemical reaction with the organic matter that came off the equipment?

  2. I've got several Hanna checkers with various reagents:

    - 3 Alkalinity checkers (1 with reagent only used once, expires 3/2023 - $40, 1 with NIB reagent, but it expired 9/2022 -$20, and one with no reagent - $20)

    - 1 Calcium checker (half reagent remaining, expires 1/2024 - $40)

    - 1 Low Range Nitrate checker (2 unopened reagent boxes, both with 10/2025 expiration) - $50

    - 1 Salifert Saltwater Master Test kit (unopened) - $15

    - 2 Red Sea Algae Control Pro Test kits (1 unopened - $25, 1 half used, $10)

    - 1 Red Sea Marine Care Multi Test kit (half used - $10)

    - 44 used (clean) Filter Socks - $50 (SOLD)

    - 1 New, never used Orphek 36 inch OR3 UV/Violet - Reef Aquarium LED Bar (no box) - $75 (SOLD)

  3. I've just upgraded tanks and still have all my old setup running with temp/flow/lights going, to include all the old sand.  It's been running for several years, so I'd consider it fairly established and your welcome to however much of it you'd like.  I was planning on emptying the tank today, so I can keep some in a tote or bucket, or just leave in the tank if you want to come get whatever you want, just let me know.....

  4. I'll take the xenia, and maybe the urchin I saw on the glass as well?  Also, are the other fish in the pics no longer available (puffer, coral beauty, etc)?

  5. So I pulled the trigger and am upgrading from a Red Sea Max 250, to a Red Sea Reefer 425XL.  I'm not keeping any of the new tank livestock, and my old tank is in the same spot that the new tank needs to go.  I have a spare acrylic 45gal tank in the garage and I've been slowly using the water from my main tank's water changes to fill it about half way, then I'll start transferring most of my coral to it (I've also got spare equipment ready to go, to include a heater, wave pump, filter, lights etc).  Once I get my old tank empty enough, I can move it from it's current spot and I'll be ready to install the new one.  As for the new one, I have two 55 gal food-grade drums that I plan on using to take the old owner's water and sand in to immediately put back in the tank once it's in position (all leveled out, etc).  I'll then let it settle for a day or two, which will give me chance to get everything in the cabinet organized and sorted before I start bringing the livestock back in from the garage, and I shouldn't have to worry about the tank cycling again, correct?

If anyone else has done this and has any recommendations, or knows of something I'm not thinking of, please share! :)  Thanks

  6. I'm seriously thinking about picking up a used Red Sea Reefer 350 and I'll need to pick it up myself (I have a trailer), but I want to make sure I don't damage it during the transport.  My first thought is to rent some moving blankets from u-haul, and maybe bring some extra pillows or other padding that I can find around the house.  I'd cushion the bottom of the tank with the blankets, as well as shield all of the sides.  I'm curious how anyone else has managed this (i.e. using ratchet straps, etc to keep it from sliding around in the trailer, and absorb the inevitable bumps it'll experience along the way).  Anyone have any expertise or advice?  Thanks in advance!

Get an Orphek OR3 bar, they have a UV specific one as well as a blue plus that has lots of UV mixed in (probably a better choice overall).

edit, Amazon has them as well if you’d rather order there:

That's perfect!  I picked up one of the 36" Violets and can't wait to get it installed....thanks again!

  8. I put some cheap 3M LEDs (stick on) that you can swap between various colors and I REALLY like the way the corals pop with the purple LEDs on.  The only problem is it's still pretty dark in the tank, as they aren't very high power LEDs.  Anyone have any recommendations for a higher power purple strip or addon?  I'm coming up empty on Amazon.... Thanks!

  9. Utter Chaos Zoa Frags for trade. I'm in Happy Valley and just looking to trade for what I don't already have (already have a few other zoas, GSP, Xenia, BTAs, kolaidascope polyps, Kenya trees, devil's hand leather, hammers, candy cane (neon green and white), Duncan's, a birds nest and some Monty caps). Looking for maybe a carpet anemone, green leather toadstool, acan, favia, or blasto frag. I can meet up, if necessary...thanks

If you have an Apex, it can be integrated with a UPS battery to detect when there’s a power failure and turn off high-powered devices to preserve the battery life for water movement.  It can also send you an alert about the power.

I explained how to do this in my tutorial on Apex Power Monitoring:

    https://www.reef2reef.com/ams/neptune-apex-programming-tutorials-part-4-power-monitoring.698/

(scroll down about half way to the section on UPS)

    Hi John,

I was looking at your diagram on this tutorial and noticed you have the Apex plugged into a wall outlet using the Auxiliary Power Adapter - wouldn't it be powered off in the event of a power outage (since it's not plugged into the UPS)?  Or will it still get power from the Aquabus line from the EB832?  Thanks!
