well in plants.. the apical meristem, it is controlled by hormones.. auxin to be specific. I would think that it has to hormonal as well.
My curiosity was peaked when i read that frags grow faster when placed on their side (even though every single one i see on this site are always vertical) that leads me to think there is some type of hormone that is being produced in the newly growing tissue that regulates other growth.
But alas, this is all just guessing on my part and projecting my botanical knowledge on to coral.

Do corals exhibit tropism? That is, a direct response to environmental conditions; in this case flow?
Plants in windy areas will have thicker stems.. because the tissue in the stem is being torn by the wind and reparing itself. Curious to know if coral exhibit the same thing... and more interesting..how? .

ok, so i knew it was going to smell a little bad. i have been on the beach at low tide, hell, i even worked on a commercial fishing boat (trust me, there was no shower, everything smelled).
But nobody told me that skimmate smells like mexican vacation vomit that was put in a plastic bag and placed in the sun for a week!
cleaned our a full cup for the first time. hmmm, what does that smell like?. SNIFFFF.. OH MY GOD!

kudos to Xmas for the hot tip. I'll throw one out as well, when drilling plastic with a hole saw, run the drill in reverse to get the hole started. This prevents the teeth from "grabbing" the plastic and chewing everything up.

with a 120 you will be fine with absolutely nothing. If you just have to do something... and your tank runs parallel with the floor joists... then simply blocking them together with 2x8 is more than enough to spread the load. (blocking between the joists).
without a footing, pyramid blocks don't offer a lot of structural support unless you have a lot of them

drilling is easy if it's not tempered. diamond bit from Amazon and a bottle of water.
Drilling tempered glass goes really well for about 10 seconds...
not all 55 gal are tempered as previously suggested. I drilled a friend's 55.

well if your wife is worried about a tank exploding I would steer more towards acrylic. It is many x stronger than glass. I'm not trying to convince you of acrylic over glass but if strength is the number one concern.. then acrylic is where you should be looking. There are reasons that huge glass tanks are hard to find.

you could always buy two 75 gallon glass aquariums, take then apart and glue them back together on a plywood base. 4x4x2 tank.. $300 all in?

scratches in acrylic are easily removed. scratches in glass... umm no.

good to know. the Honda is spend for sure.
on a slightly different note, I was actually researching whole house back up generators. they are a LOT cheaper than I thought they would be. 1500 to 2k gets you a pretty decent one. it detects if your power is off and automatically turns on

FYI.. if you want THE gold standard of quiet generators then the Honda EU2000ie is what you want. it has a quiet mode that throttles down based on power need. I have one and it is very very quiet. The last forever and people love them. it does come at a cost though.. 1k new. $800 used.

wife/girlfriend was on call.last night so I listened to 90's rap music (Emminem is the secret to my youthful glow) and stayed up till like 3am working on the ultimate DIY power station of doom.
It took so long as I have found a way to completely stop most, if not all of the frustrations commonly encountered with tank management. stay tuned!!
