  1. That's true, toilet brushes are great for skimmers.  Makes the job allot easier!

Yea I just did mine yesterday actually took the whole skimmer out and the little holes I used a long brush don't know what they call it.  But it gets in between all the wholes it looks brand new.  Normally I do that every 3 months but had a urge to get er done :)

Anyone else have any ideas if you view toss it up I love do it yourself stuff and things everyday use hat you can use for this hobby.

  2. I bought a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser at the Dollar Tree for $1 a couple of months ago. If they are still in stock, it's the best deal in town. They will not fall apart, and are non-toxic aquarium use, as far as I know. I do know lots of people use them for aquarium use. They have been recommended for buffing out micro-scratched in acrylic. No need to remove any water either.

Well I went to the 1 dollar store they had magic Eraser but it wasn't called that it was called magic something else same thing it looked like.

But with a warning that said do not use on Aquarium  I chose to stay away from it.

  3. Where do you get them little ice trays i dont see the tiny ones around much.

Ok here is another who needs a dose machine when you can use paper cups.

I have 3 of them i poked holes in them set timer for when they are empty i poke a hole in the top for a zip tie and couple pine holes in the bottom for the drip. One is little over 3 hours over 2 hours and about 1 hour for the other.  Work perfect been using them for month now :)

  4. BTW I had a friend use a dose system and it went haywire and dosed his tank 30 oz when it was supposed to do 1 killed it all so what i do and works perfect i have a paper cup on a zip tie over the sump and i poked 2 tiny pine holes when you dose you want it to be slow.  I timed it and it takes 3 and half hours for my cup to empy nice drips. I have 3 cups i made and timed one is at 2 hours and another 1 hour thats to fast for me though. Just a thought for you.

  5. Thanks! Yeah, I started dosing my aquarium and it seems to be maintaining alkalinity. I haven't measured to see a change in pH, but I think it is fine. Baking soda is what I will use next.

Ya I'm still doing 2oz a day one bag is going to last a year or two if I only does 2 oz a day.

But ill still check it as I add things I'm sure it will eat up more later.

  6. Ooh. Good idea. Will try that when I go after what's left tomorrow.

Yup. Artificial rock cultured in Florida. I'm looking forward to checking out all hitchhikers. :)

lol I'm sure you will have a few.. Those tanks are pretty sweet and ya for the life of me why do they glue the [language filter] paper down it seems like :)

  7. Whether they are spaghetti worms, or cirratulids (hair worms), some people do not care for them. Various shrimp or small hermit crabs may keep the populations down. Also, a Copperband Butterfly or various wrasses may help.

I kind of want one of those but need to wait couple more months those are very touchy fish.

Ya I just had a wrasse that would eat all my snails even the turbo the one I got now don't think he likes them which is good.

Would peppermint shrimp eat on these?

  8. I think I might attempt baking soda for the next batch, but for now I am going to use sodium carbonate. It is very similar.

I just imagine that it would alter pH a little more than baking soda.

Ya I'm new to it I never had to worry about it ever because I didn't keep corals like I do now. So this is working perfect for me right now.

BTW if you go to jet.com they have 13lbs of baking soda for 9.99 each best price around and I just got 2 bags plus your 1st order you can get discount if you spend certain amount which I did got me few things .

  9. They are probably Terrebelid worms, commonly called "Spaghetti Worms". They are harmless. Don't worry about them. They show that your tank is becoming established. Don't panic when your live rock looks live! I once had a customer at a LFS I worked at, come in and wanted to know if he should bleach his rock, as what I sold him was full of "bugs". If it seems like you have too many in your tank, there is possibly a buildup of detritus. If you are not using a filter sock, go ahead and use one.

I don't think that is it. These things are hard shells onto the rocks and puts out slim in my tank up to 8 inch long. I wiped it out yesterday because I thought it was just some weird thing floating in there until I looked close today.  I seen something come out of this thing. these long things get out there collect food then it sucks into the hole.

  10. Yeah I read that too but the mucousy mess they left was enough convincing for me. I'm not sure where I got them just showed up one day.

Ya that is so odd I have never had this happen. But there are things out there reading the article I read that they still don't know. They say there are over 100,000 types of snails. Nice read about them.

Hope I got the 3 that was there. pretty easy to spot when they get that long slim out there.

  11.

Ya I'll do it when i het home. Did you epoxy on it to in the holes or just glue

I did glue in the holes and then covered the whole thing in epoxy just to be sure but it was easy for me since all I have is a 20 gallon and it was the rock on top.

    Gosh :(

I just tore out 5 big chunks to get to this sucker.. Stuck it all in seen another slimy thing coming out of a rock so pulled it back out covered that whole.  I put poxy on 2 holes and just glued the other because I wasn't going to break all that out of there again.   I will keep a eye out for any more of these things that pop up.

I was reading that some crabs keep them in check
