  1. I am just curious. No hard feelings.

If you feel it isn't an issue because there are plenty of them and we regulate the capture of species, say it. If you think all species are sadly being taken from the wild and should never be. Let's hear it. Maybe you just feel some species are over captured, etc.

I want people to be open about this.  After all this is the place to talk about it. It is in our constinution. xD

  2. I know these are related, but are separate measurements. Is there an easy formula for determining your alkalinity based on your pH readings?

    Thanks,

I wish. It would make all of our lives a lot simpler.

There are a lot of factors that affect pH and as Baroose_Le said there is no direct relationship. I would believe even that planted tank table would be way off with saltwater having such high concentrations of varying ions from tank to tank.

I'd probably decide on the level of accuracy you want and go find a test kit to match. The cheaper ones (no titration kit) are less accurate and the higher the price tag the more accuracy you'll get. Edit: Commonly.

  3. 21?  Why yes!  I am 21.  At least that's how I feel.  And thanks for the kind comments.  I'm very lucky to be a member of this club and community.  I've made so many friends here, including you!

I knew you weren't old enough to be drinking that alcoholic beverage at the December meet.

    Happy Birthday, Holly!

  4. Unhealthy eating exists for all people. Skinny or fat. It's crazy how easy it is to fall into the cycle of obsessing about weight. It almost makes you want to eat more. I used to binge eat and go running for few hours to compensate, then you feel even hungrier and want more food. The key is to stop the cycle from the root of the problem, and talking about it helps you find it.

Thanks for sharing your stories. Please keep me updated. :)

  5. It's great to see how far you've come. Keep up the hard work. Losing weight isn't easy.

This may be a surprise to a lot of you, but I have also had weight issues. I was a horrible binge eater for years. A pizza, two orders of chinese, two dozen bakes cookies and cinnamon sticks to go was a common Friday night. Probably a 2L in there somewhere. I know how hard it can be to manage what you eat and control what goes in your body. It took a lot of talking and being open about it for it to stop.

You two seem like the type of people that are dedicated to accomplishing your goals. Make it happen. Your dreams are the limit.

  6. Freezing would sort out most of the parasites but I would be most concerned about domoic acid bioaccumulating in tissue of the fishies. It's usually more of a concern with mammals (I think) but given the shellfish closures from this toxin in the last couple of years especially and currently with Dungeness crabs and razor clams along most or all of the coast, I'd be leery of adding that to my system.

Lots of of good, site-specific and seasonal info for acid levels and harvesting in both links. I've considered feeding fresh frozen razors to some of my animals but I always get back to the "ounce of prevention" part on this. If they were harvested outside the PNW, however, it could be an option, depending on where they were harvested and what that state's DFW data says.

    My 0.02.

That is really interesting and something I have never heard of. In the Puget Sound, I know there is a lot of Cadmium/Mercury issues in shellfish, along with other heavy metals. Although, that is a human caused issue. This seems to be a natural process caused from diatoms and it looks to be on a cycle every ~10-13 years (second link). I wonder how long we have been recording levels of it. You might be able to get away with feeding them when we aren't in a high concentration year.

It doesn't look like I would try feeding them this year.

  7. Do I need to run Carbon and/or GFO now?

Honestly, I don't think you will need to for a while. I think that if you use Carbon or GFO too early, you might starve the system of nutrients. Give it a couple months.

Is it ok to add all corals over a short period of time (one month)?

Sure. Although, you run a higher risk of something happening. Things in this hobby happen slowly. I did put corals in my tank within the first month, but added them very slowly. I noticed in my 5                 gallon on campus, that whenever I reboot the tank if I add too many at once it tends to cause problems.

Do I need to increase the intensity of my LED for SPS? Am I giving them enough light without causing an algae issue?

I bet one Ocean Revive will be enough for your tank, since it is a cube and it will happily cover everything. Maybe get the PAR meter on the forum and see if it is adequate. Here is the PAR meter link:

Do I need to get an algae scrubber although I have a refugium?

Algae scrubbers are never a bad idea. I think floating some macro in the refugium will work just fine, but an algae scrubber will work more efficiently.

I really love green manderin gobies.I had one male manderin a few years back that I trained to eat pallets. One day he decided to end his life, after staying 1.5 years with us, by jumping out (I forgot to add the screen) So I want to give another try with one of these guys may be after a year. Anyone knows a  place that sells pallet trained healthy green manderins? \

I don't have any experience with Mandarins, but I know there are a lot of great fish stores all across Oregon. Portland has Cuddlefish, Golden Basket, Upscales and many, many more. Salem and Wilsonville have TPA.
