  1. Yeah, I’ve read multiple times that Calc and Alk are tied together so you would notice a drop in your Alk if your Calc was dropping as well.
I figured it was worth the kit though just to have both as well as low end Phos checker.
Mixed reef is what I’m going for, so hopefully I can get there. I like a good challenge.
Some free hardy frags would be awesome. I don’t have much in trade but if you wanted maybe some Orange Rainbow or Halle Berry Zoa frags I’d be happy to trade you some.

Salted, I forgot to say how awesome your photos are. What camera do you use?

  2. Hello folks!
I’m Waffles and I’m new around here and to reefing in general. I live in Eugene Oregon.
I started April last year with a Fluval Evo and have been adding gear over the past year. I recently switched everything over to a C-Vue 26g by Cobalt aquatics.

Here’s a list of my hardware:
    C-Vue 26g from Cobalt Aquatics
    2 AI Prime Hd’s
    Icap K1 nano skimmer
    Syncra Silent 1.0 return pump
    Innovative Marine Spinstream Return Nozzle
    Hydor 240 powerhead
    Hydor 550 powerhead
    Hydor Smart Wave Controller
    Tunze Osmolator ATO
    150W Cobalt Neotherm Heater
2 50w grow LED bulbs from Amazon for fuge

I love, love, love this hobby and I’m sure you can all understand how fulfilling and rewarding it can be. The peace I feel when I just sit and stare into this ecosystem in a little glass box is so serene.
I look forward to becoming more involved in the PNW reef scene and becoming a part of the community.

Welcome to this addicting hobby. I had a family member who saw me doing all the chores associated with having a reef tank. I was constantly reading Coral magazine and looking at vids. He said “you are so addicted” I said thank you lol. He did not have a clue how much I love it. Don’t like all the bad stuff that happens but isn’t that how we learn?

  3. This last meeting was so awesome! Thanks again Jeff for making it an epic legendary meeting!
I would like to continue the trend of awesomeness and have great food, great deals and fun at the May meeting! They may meeting will be Saturday May 12 at Golden Basket Reef. If you have never heard of this place you are missing out! Rudy is nationally known and people like Jason Fox buy from him. He was in the past a wholesaler so he has a large operation of tanks and tanks of coral goodness! SPS, torches, mushrooms, zoas, euphyllia you name it!
If you went to the frag show and loved the food you will be excited Sirena and Scott are going to collaborate and do street tacos with all the fixings including those awesome beans he made last time!
I am also looking in to getting a Margarita/Daquiri machine with nonalcoholic options available for those who are driving! (Please be responsible, Uber or Lyft or get a designated driver or drink moderately)
What would you like to see at this meeting?

Rudy’s place is incredible, I buy from him a lot, most recently tonight I bought 4 corals. I’m excited about a Margarita/ daiquiri bar

  4. Typical story- had freshwater tanks but always looked on with envy at the saltwater world. The best fish. Corals. The chemistry and science. But mostly just how [language filter] pretty that water looks.
Bought a used Nuvo 20 and got water in it last weekend. Now patiently waiting for it to cycle. Been to pretty much every LFS and have enjoyed meeting everyone.
Looking to keep a low maintence tank with a few fish,  softies and LPS. Going to rely on you all for advice.

    Do you have any questions?

  5. I wish I could since that was the whole logic behind joining, to meet fellow hobbyists.
How often are there meet ups like this? Maybe I can plan for the next one.

I’m pretty sure they have a meeting on a monthly basis. They have them in different areas of the Portland area

  6. Welcome Waffles, your tank is looking awesome. If you are not busy tomorrow between 3-5 then come to the April meeting/ BBQ at Cuttlefish and Coral. This will be my first meeting.  I’ve kept fish since I was a kid. Couldn’t have furry animals because of asthma so fell in love with fish. My current tank is a 30 gal mixed reef

  7. Good news, just completed my third large water change, and the nitrates now measure only 5.  My fingers are crossed that a forth change will finally get me down where I want.

    Did vacuum your sandbed?

  8. mine is crazy high like around 25 + no matter what I do. Been like that for ever...

Recently lowered my nitrates to 25 from 50 using algae scrubber and increased water changes

Can Coral be picked up in store?

  10. Nothing too exciting this week, tank cycling.  I heard that fish get chilly, picked up a heater for them.  Also some fancy schmancy test kit action, looking at starting to run tests next week.

Is there anyone that wants to talk me out of the Apex ATO?  I have seen a few mixed reviews, most folks say the Tunze is rock solid, but I am migrating toward the Apex ecosystem.  Before I pull the trigger I was hoping to hear of a local horror story.

At any rate, thanks for watching.

    The Tunze is the best

  11. So I am wanting to break down my 20gal nano and put some of the rock with mushrooms in my big tank. But some of the rock has bubble algae. How can I get rid of the bubble algae without getting it into my big tank?

If you’re pulling the bubble algae off the rock make sure you don’t pop any bubble as you will release spores. If you end up with BA left on the rock then try emerald crabs

  12. I’m starting to second guess my decision to go bare bottom. Not because of the look but rather because of the risk of falling rocks. Has anybody ever had an issue with this?

I’m late to this conversation but I’ve read some pro reefers use Starboard to protect their tank from falling rock.
