  1. Really good skimmer and some activated carbon in moderation. that is the only way to attempt to remove the toxins from the water.

Ok, but it is do-able without causing too much stress to the corals? As far as skimmer, I will be using a 40 B for a sump, total will be about 145-150 gall, should I be looking at a 200 gal skimmer?

  2. I am in the works of building a 120, (thank you Chris!!). I'm all about planning and getting an idea together before actually begin setup, so I have some questions for the experts. Stop looking around, that's you guys!! LoL

    So, my first question is:

Is it possible to have sps, lps, and softies together in a 120? From what I have been reading, the softies release "chemicals" that could "upset" or even kill other corals, that's not what I'm going for. I love the idea of having a mix reef, but not if they are going to be stressed out all the time. If all three should not be mixed, am I able to keep sps and lps together in a 120 or should I wait until I get a bigger tank and just stick to one type?

More questions to follow once I have an idea of corals are going into the tank. Thank you all in advance for the help.

  3. I'd consider top of the line TMC. They have medical grade membranes and a design meant for less waste water. A three stage RO will get you the same results as a 4 or 5 stage RO with DI from BRS. Ends up saving you money in the long run. This is our recommendations from using RO on 100s of tanks.

Awesome!! Thank you, I will check them out!!

  4. I would love to set up a shark tank, do you have your set up as a thread in the tank build? I'd love to check it out!

Great whites can swim around 100 miles a day, and stress out really badly if there's anything blocking them from doing so. It has been attempted many, many times. We can successfully keep even a whale shark, but the great white shark just doesn't take well to captivity. They get irritable if they are enclosed, regardless of the size of the enclosure, and they will proceed to attack tankmates, after which they will quickly begin to die. You could call it a really REALLY bad case of claustrophobia.

Funny thing is I'm in the process of planning and setting up a shark tank. I have another post here about sharing shark/ray vitamins, but it seems that I might be the only person who will be keeping sharks in this community.

Did this wrong on my phone, I meant to quote you so I could ask you, but that didn't work. LoL...

  5. Well, it's just about shark week and I must admit, I LOVE IT!!! It's entertaining to me, more so, I wish I could dive with some sharks, but I'm still getting the "no" from the mrs. . . LoL. Anyways, Something that always comes to my mind when shark week starts to gear up is the captivity of great whites. I'm not interested in the captivity as far as a monetary reason, but more for an educational. I find it fascinating and sad that they have had no true success in captivity. My mind begins to wonder on possible ways a great white could be kept and thrive, most of those ideas, coming from my Lego days. . . and by that, I mean yesterday! LoL

There is so much still to learn with everything under our water world, and so many people to learn from! I really enjoy this group and hope to get down for more meetings!!!

What are your thoughts on shark week? How about great whites? How about your tanks, how are your tanks doing? Are your tanks doing better then you had ever hoped for, or, are you enjoying where they are, but had hoped for bigger and better?

  6. I will be down in the Portland area this weekend picking up a tank and would like to grab some dry rock if anyone has some laying around they are not using. I am picking up a 120, THANK YOU CHRIS!!!!! and will need to get to currying and getting it set up. Picking up live rock doesn't make much since as I will be staying there for the night and then driving the way back early morning.

    Thank You
