1. Due to the amount of yellow water and lack of ideas, I called a local marine biologist, he had me bring in a sample of the water, as it turns out, the yellowing of the water was caused by the plants I had in it. The plant was releasing nutrients into the water in an effort to reproduce. He said that all I need to do is remove the plants, harvest 1/3rd of it and wait a week before putting it back in and that the water should clear up in a couple of days. When I pulled the plant out I noticed that on the bottom of the plant that it had little yellow bulbs that were leaking yellow into the tank. I never saw it before because that part of the plant was partially buried in the sand.
2. Since it is still not clearing up at all, I am assuming it was a bacterial bloom of some kind.
3. Powerhead didn't fall, but it could be some sand maybe from my pistol shrimp, however, when I take a glass of water out it is definitely a yellowish tint. Just finished a water change, it looked better for about 10 minutes, but now it looks super yellow again, hopefully the carbon filter will kick in and correct w/e it is. Did some more indepth reading on the diatoms, I guess when they are in high concentration they can change water color. Pretty much all of the brown diatom type algae has fallen off the glass and disappeared over night and off the sand so maybe it just got absorbed into the water and changed the color...idk.. =) hopefully the carbon will do its job and kick butt!
4. Yeah, I put a couple carbon filters in to help with the yellowing.
5. Woke up this morning and found my water was yellow and cloudy, and all the diatoms in the tank ( from cycling ) have either died...or Been absorbed into my water... When my first tank cycled.. I did not get this slightly yellow water and cloudy look, anyone have any ideas as to whats going on? PH 8.1 Ammonia - 0 Nitrites - 0 Nitrates - 0 Tested as soon as I saw the water, was worried it was an ammonia spike. Checked my skimmer to make sure it was not dumping the cup back into the water. Does not seem to be affecting the behaviors of the fish that I do have. FOWLR tank
6. Thanks for the Advice Jeramy I will definitely look into that. @Matty, I was thinking mid July would be when I invest in all the equipment... Wife is already pretty mad at me for spending a couple hundred on livestock for the 55g this month! Thanks for offering to sell some of your equipment to me, when you do list them if I am in a position to buy them from you I will let you know!
7. All I have ever done is a FOWLR tank, so im not sure how to start up an all zoa tank but that would indeed be pretty cool. Hopefully as I gain more experience in the hobby Ill be able to do that someday!
8. Thanks for the information, working with a budget of about $100 for now, so may have to hold off until I clear out some upcoming bills.
9. The light he gave me is some type of low watt Fluorescent lights. He said he thinks they were only like 15 watts. So ill have to definitely upgrade those on payday. Was thinking a small sand bed and perhaps another goby and pistol pair. ( Absolutely love watching my pair in my 55g tank. ) what are the going costs on led lights that are strong enough for some corals? Ill also have to get a skimmer, and I'm thinking a new power head because the one he had is extremely weak. Suggestions for a skimmer?
10. My friend just quit the Fish hobby and gave me his 10g tank, a heater, a small power head. and a very small light.. Not entirely sure what to put in it yet, any good ideas? I can use water from my display tank to put in it so that I can skip a lot of the cycling process. I have never owned a tank so small so not entirely sure where to start with it. Would love any input people could give and suggestions on equipment.
11. If you decide to head towards salem let me know....
12. those clove polyps are beautiful, wish I lived closer to you!
13. My Tiger pistol did kill my cleaner shrimp when I put him in, but i suspect thats because my cleaner shrimp decided he wanted to try and clean the front of one of the pistol shrimps tunnels...
14. I ordered a goby / pistol pair... but the goby didnt make it through shipping, waiting on my replacement one
15. So, I go ta tiger pistol shrimp a couple weeks ago, who decided to make a nice little tunnel system under my live rock... And the last couple days i realized i was missing some of my Zoo frags...and some hermits....and some nas snails... as I was cleaning I decided to take a look into his burrow... lifted up my LR... and he had packed all of them into the walls of his burrow... They were all alive, and the frags were accounted for... He was using them all as decorations!
16. Hey guys, recently one of my chromis ( have 3) have begun to pick on my Banggai Cardinal fish. I currently have 2 Banggai Cardinals ( my 3rd was killed a while back during a 2 day aggression fest by my emerald crab before he settled down ) The chromis will shoot after them and peck at them and chase them around the tank. This is a recent development and I am worried if I need to take him out or put my cardinals in a different tank so that they do not get killed by the chromis. I did some reading saying that the chromis can become aggressive when they are getting ready to breed, but different sites say that when they do get to that stage, the male chromis starts to turn yellowish which mine has not... Any ideas on whats going on or what I can do. its a 55g FOWLR tank
17. I really like my Emerald crab, he sifts my sand a lot scavenging, and will even scrape off the brown algae i have right now that's on my glass.
18. I'm a big fan of the nassarius snails, they sift the sand and pick up any left overs. However, it takes a ton of them to really make a difference in my 55g tank. I have a Astrea snail who does ok, and I had 4 turbo snails, but 2 of them have died recently =/
19. Very cool picture, they are super pretty you have done a good job of raising that colony.
20. My 2 Banggai's have pretty much destroyed all the pods they can get to in my tank, they ate all my bigger ones, so now my Mandarin scours the LR all day for the little ones, I have just recently started getting my Mandarin to start eating some Mysis out of a baster thank god so he wont starve.
21. I ran into a bad issue with Fed Ex last week myself, ordered some live fish, he gets to the door with the shipment, tips the box completely upside down and says, " Live fish" and then drops it on the ground and walked off...
22. Thanks for the welcome guys and gals =)
23. Hey guys new to the site and 4 months into the hobby! I have a 55g Fish and live rock tank. My wife and I inherited an old 55g tank, and we got it all going, cycled, added fish and for 3 months it was going great, and 2 weeks ago low and behold, we notice our tank was bowing! Turns out, it was missing a center support being as it was so old. We decided to buy a new 55g tank and got things transferred over to the new tank. Now we are going back through the all so fun cycling process =). However, all of our fish are still happy as can be. Here is a link to some pictures of some of my fish right after feeding time. http://s1054.photobucket.com/albums/s490/Ravenofthought/New%20tank/ Just added some tiger pods to my aquarium and now my Mandarin wont leave the top very often as he scours for free floaters.
