How new or old are your bulbs....I am assuming though that's something you already thought of so what our your #'s like at the moment? Have you tried food other than silversides?

I made the same switch a few months ago from API to the hanna checker. Just so you can compare a little, I had a big difference in readings between the 2 test too. I think it would be that way when switching between any 2 brands. It has always been my understanding that we work with in a wide range that is exceptable by our tanks, and as long as we hit some where in that range and keep the # stable it is all good. I know some of us like to aim for a certain # w/ the idea that maintaining that # will give them better growth, I'll tell you though I can never get my KH above 9 (ever) and I get some nice growth. Surprising growth really, not to say it couldn't be better. I think after a few tests w/ the hanna test kit you will find you like it. Unfortunately I don't know much about reactors, so thx for the thread I'm learning a lot from this one.

Any one know if fish traps work on these guys? And if so any one have one to loan out? If they don't work on the hippos than how does one get it out of a tank?

Yes welcome...I moved back from Colorado my self a couple years ago. Nice place to high paced for me though. Lots of cubes for sale here lately, should be easy to find one.

So I have been handling the hatching of these guys and we are making it farther each time. First attempt we managed to hatch, but had no rotifers in sight. Second time we got through the first 2 days w/ four left and the rotifers (curtsey of Jamie from the Clown House) was just a little too late. Here is a pic though on the second day, and I'll post pics of the culture station after my camera charges.

Usually ammonia in those levels, in a well established tank, means something has died and is rotting away. You probably have some Nitrites also.

 

If your newly mixed SW is close in parameters (PH, Alk, Cal and Temp) to your tank IMHO you could a 40%-50% change

+1 on this...also when we talked last night you said you were looking for better growth? Any idea what the mag is? After you get the other 3 prams under control w/ WC that's when I personally would start adding equipment (but that's me), adding new equipment while things are kind of off w/ the system makes it hard to tell how the new stuff is really effecting the tank.
